We report about a patient who was admitted with acute lower right quadrant pain. She underwent an undetermined operation for appendiceal abscess formation 19 years ago. Our investigations including ultrasound, CT-scan, conventional radiography and finally coloscopy revealed a pericoecal mass formation. Due to worsening of the symptoms, emergency laparotomy was performed. An inflammatory process and a partial necrosis of the coecum wall at the site of the appendix basis were identified und managed by ileocoecal resection and drainage. A three-year old male cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) presented with clinical signs of anorexia and depression that decreased over a 48-hour period. Results of abdominal radiography abdominocentesis, blood biochemical analysis and CBC suggested septic peritonitis. Tumours of the small intestine differ from gastric or colonic neoplasms because of their low incidence rate and the occurrence of histologic entities rarely seen in other gastrointestinal locations. In our institution 67 patients with small intestinal tumours were treated through 1960 to 1991, including 19 carcinomas, 15 carcinoids, 13 sarcomas and 7 lymphomas. We report on two laparoscopically sterilised patients who presented with increasing lower abdominal pain and sonographically proven adnexal masses. The first patient, who had been sterilised two years ago, underwent primary laparotomy. This Case Report describes a patient with primary fallopian tube cancer who had a late recurrence of pelvic disease following adjuvant chemotherapy for early-stage disease. Secondary cytoreductive surgery was suboptimal. The bulky residual disease was refractory to platinum-based therapy. Extension of the disease to the retroperitoneum resulted in obstructed venous return, ureteral obstruction, and renal infection. The latter necessitated a third laparotomy and a nephrectomy. BACKGROUND: Volvulus is the second most common cause of intestinal obstruction in pregnancy. Rarely is the small bowel involved, and even less frequently is the volvulus complete.
CASE: The patient was referred at 24 weeks and 4 days' gestation for persistent anorexia, emesis, and abdominal distention. History, physical examination, and abdominal radiographs were consistent with a complete small-bowel obstruction. Laparotomy revealed two adhesive bands, which were lysed, and a 360 degrees volvulus of the small bowel about its mesentery, which was successfully reduced.

Three cases of retrosternal diaphragmatic hernia (Morgagni hernia) are reported. Diagnosis have been made by conventional radiology (Chest X-ray, Upper G-I series) in 2 cases: the third one was found incidentally during a laparotomy. Septic arthritis is a devastating complication of transabdominal gunshot wounds to the hip. Five patients sustained gunshot wounds to the hip which violated the alimentary tract. Diagnosis was established with plain radiographs in three patients, arthrogram in one patient, and a gastrointestinal series in one patient. Three patients had an exploratory laparotomy with diverting colostomy followed by immediate hip arthrotomy within 24 hours and no joint infections occurred. Transvaginal catheterization of the fallopian tube has gained increased popularity for transfer of embryos and gametes. Forty-five ITIs were performed on 32 patients using the novel approach of tubal transfer via tactile sensation. This group of patients had undergone an average of 5.2 IUIs before ITI. There were a total of 11 pregnancies, 6 occurring with hMG stimulation and 5 with CC-stimulated cycles (34% PR per patient). A 19-year-old woman developed gradually worsening abdominal pain, signs of peritonitis, and hematemesis. Laparotomy revealed peritonitis due to segmental small-bowel infarction, and the underlying pathologic condition was mesenteric vein thrombosis. In a period from 1984 to 1986 (T-scan was used as acute diagnostic in 74 polytraumatized patients. The patients were brought by emergency car or helicopter during or shortly after shock treatment directly to the computerized tomography. In all patients several regions of the body (head, thorax, abdomen, extremities) were examined in the (T-scan. Twenty-seven patients with spontaneous rupture of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) underwent surgical treatment during the past ten years. The indications for emergent laparotomy were hemoperitoneum in 14 and unspecified peritonitis in 13. Twelve were found to have noncirrhotic HCC. The incidence of associated cirrhosis was 55.56 per cent. Surgical procedures included hepatic resection in 14, hepatic arterial ligation in six and packing, suture and electrocauterization in seven. Operations were performed on 327 patients for blunt abdominal trauma at the casualty ward of the Istanbul University Hospital, over the past three years. Isolated injuries to small intestines were recorded by laparotomy from 22 of these cases. Peritoneal lavage was applied to 18 patients. Two patients with rare localizations of extrapulmonary tuberculosis are presented. In a 55-year-old man admitted with septic fever and a low neutrophil count, ultrasonography of the spleen revealed splenomegaly with numerous hypodense foci. Fine needle biopsy of one of the foci disclosed tuberculosis.
