OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate long-term facial growth in adults previously treated for an isolated unilateral complete cleft lip, alveolus and palate by two-stage palatoplasty.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients of 17 years and older treated by two-stage palatoplasty were invited for long-term follow-up. During follow-up, lateral cephalograms were obtained (n = 52). Medical history was acquired from their medical files. We report on a family in which 3 sibs were affected with conductive deafness, bilateral preauricular and commissural lip pits, monolateral branchial fistula, and rib anomalies. On the basis of parental consanguinity, lack of clinical variability and affected subjects of both sexes, this condition seems to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. We suggest that these findings comprise a new autosomal recessive entity of branchial, auricular and costal anomalies, for which we suggest the acronym BOC (branchio-oto-costal) syndrome.

A chromosomally normal brother and sister shared a lethal pattern of anomalies including bilateral cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism, flat facial profile, flat occiput, complex congenital heart defect, and malrotation of the intestine. The male was large for gestational age, while his sister was normally grown. The girl had bifid thumbs, but the boy had only minor hand anomalies. These findings are not consistent with any previously recognized syndrome and represent a new condition with probable autosomal recessive inheritance.

INTRODUCTION: Volar lip fractures of the middle phalanx are uncommon but potentially debilitating intra-articular injuries, typically resulting from axial loading combined with hyperextension or dorsal dislocation. They frequently involve avulsion of the volar base of the middle phalanx along with the volar plate, compromising joint congruity and stability.
