A 10-month-old girl with sexual precocity of recent onset was found to have elevated levels of estrogens, progesterone and androgen precursors, associated with a polycystic left ovary. After ovariectomy, estrogen and androgen levels were normal, and the clinical symptoms began to regress. A few months later, a huge mediastinal mass was unexpectedly discovered. Removal of the mass, identified later as a benign teratoma, was followed by the total normalization of the clinical and hormonal findings. The purpose of this study is to evaluate 13 patients with primary ovarian failure (POF). All patients were less than 35 years of age. Serum FSH, performed by RIA, was in the post-menopausal range in all patients. Karyotype with Q-banding was performed on peripheral leukocytes and/or ovarian tissue. All patients had 46XX karyotype. The optimal hormonal therapy for transsexual patients is not known. The physical and hormonal characteristics of 38 noncastrate male-to-female transsexuals and 14 noncastrate female-to-male transsexuals have been measured before and/or during therapy with various forms and dosages of hormonal therapy.
