Egg donation and gestational surrogacy: Pregnancy is riskier with an unrelated embryo.

Modern medicine has revolutionized family planning. Remarkably, women1 can carry to term embryos with whom they share no genetic connection, a feat made possible through egg donation and/or gestational surrogacy. Our reproductive systems evolved to accommodate embryos that are 50% related to the carrier, not 0% related. Here, we apply evolutionary theory to explain how and why pregnancy is riskier with an unrelated embryo. When a woman gestates an unrelated embryo, she is significantly more likely to develop preeclampsia and other diseases above and beyond the known risks associated with advan

Maternal pregnancy-related anxiety and children's physical growth: the Ma'anshan birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have identified maternal antenatal anxiety and several adverse birth outcomes, but limited studies have focused on the relationship with the long-term physical growth of children. The study aimed to assess the influence of maternal pregnancy-related anxiety on physical growth in children at different exposure periods during pregnancy. METHODS: 3,154 mother-child pairs were included based on the Ma'anshan birth cohort study. Maternal prenatal anxiety was obtained by administering a questionnaire using the pregnancy-related anxiety questionnaire (PRAQ) scale

Perinatal bacterial colonization and neonatal early-onset sepsis: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The utility of determining maternal-neonatal surface colonization as detected by standard microbiological cultures around the time of birth is unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between maternal and neonatal surface colonization at birth and neonatal early onset sepsis (EOS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) present in the brain with AD CSF biomarker levels. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of newborns admitted to the neonatal department of a referral women's and children's hospital from 2009 to

Maternal, infant, and environmental risk factors for sudden unexpected infant deaths: results from a large, administrative cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) have focused on individual domains of risk factors (maternal, infant, and environmental), resulting in limited capture of this multifactorial outcome. The objective of this study was to examine the geographic distribution of SUID in San Diego County, and assess maternal, infant, and environmental risk factors from a large, administrative research platform. STUDY DESIGN: Births in California between 2005 and 2017 were linked to hospital discharge summaries and death files. From this retrospective birth cohort, cases of SUID were

Safety and protective effects of maternal influenza vaccination on pregnancy and birth outcomes: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Our study aimed to assess the safety and protective effect of maternal influenza vaccination on pregnancy and birth outcomes. METHODS: The study population comprised 1253 healthy nulliparous pregnant women in South Australia between 2015 and 2018. Participants were followed prospectively, with vaccination status (confirmed by medical records), pregnancy, and birth outcome data collected by midwives. Adjusted relative risks (aRRs) and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) were estimated accounting for time-varying vaccine exposure and temporal nature of each outcome. FINDINGS: Maternal in

Maternal Coronavirus Infections and Neonates Born to Mothers with SARS-CoV-2: A Systematic Review.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is continuously affecting the lives of all people. Understanding the impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy in terms of morbidity, mortality, and perinatal maternal and fetal outcomes is essential to propose strategies for prevention and infection control. Here, we conducted a systematic review to investigate pregnant women infected with COVID-19 in terms of signs and symptoms, type of delivery, comorbidities, maternal and neonatal outcomes, and the possibility of vertical transmission. A search on Embase and PubMed databases was performed on 31 Octobe

Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) alters maternal and fetal glucose and lipid metabolism and produces neonatal mortality, low birthweight, and hepatomegaly in the Sprague-Dawley rat.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) is an industrial replacement for the straight-chain perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Previously we reported maternal, fetal, and postnatal effects from gestation day (GD) 14-18 oral dosing in Sprague-Dawley rats. Here, we further evaluated the perinatal toxicity of HFPO-DA by orally dosing rat dams with 1-125 mg/kg/d (n = 4 litters per dose) from GD16-20 and with 10-250 mg/kg/d (n = 5) from GD8 - postnatal day (PND) 2. Effects of GD16-20 dosing were similar to those previously reported for GD14-18 dosing and

Maternal iron nutriture modulates placental development in a rat model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) causes developmental abnormalities known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Maternal iron status modulates the severity of these defects in the offspring. Because the placenta is central in supporting fetal development, we investigated whether maternal iron status similarly modulates alcohol's effects in the placenta. We hypothesized that PAE causes placental insufficiency by decreasing placental weight and efficiency, and we hypothesized that these are worsened by maternal iron deficiency (ID) and alleviated by dietary iron fortification (IF). We also d

The Risk of Offspring Psychiatric Disorders in the Setting of Maternal Obesity and Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to metabolic disturbances is associated with increased risk of offspring neurodevelopmental impairment and autism spectrum disorder, while little is known about the joint effect of maternal obesity and diabetes. With this study, we aim to assess the joint effect of maternal obesity and diabetes on the risk for offspring psychiatric and mild neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS: Nationwide registries were used to link data of all live births in Finland between 2004 and 2014 (n = 649 043). Cox proportional hazards modeling adjusting for potential confounders was a

Associations of maternal type 1 diabetes with childhood adiposity and metabolic health in the offspring: a prospective cohort study.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Exposure to an intrauterine hyperglycaemic environment has been suggested to increase the offspring's later risk for being overweight or having metabolic abnormalities, but conclusive evidence for pregnancies affected by maternal type 1 diabetes is still lacking. This study aims to analyse the relationship between maternal type 1 diabetes and the offspring's metabolic health and investigate whether birthweight and/or changes in the offspring's metabolome are in the potential pathway. METHODS: We analysed data from 610 and 2169 offspring having a first-degree relative with typ

Maternal Depression Across the First Years of Life Impacts the Neural Basis of Empathy in Preadolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to maternal depression across the first years of life markedly increases children's susceptibility to psychopathology, yet no study has tested its effects on the maturation of children's social brain. METHOD: Using a birth cohort of mothers with no contextual risk (N = 1,983), families were followed at 7 time points from birth to 11 years and repeatedly assessed for maternal depression across the first 6 years to form 2 cohorts: mothers continuously depressed from birth to 6 years and controls without depression. At 11 years of age, children's (n = 72; depressed, n = 27; n

Maternal dietary docosahexaenoic acid supplementation attenuates fetal growth restriction and enhances pulmonary function in a newborn mouse model of perinatal inflammation.

The preterm infant is often exposed to maternal and neonatal inflammatory stimuli and is born with immature lungs, resulting in a need for oxygen therapy. Nutritional intervention with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 6.3 g/kg of diet) has been shown to attenuate inflammation in various human diseases. Previous studies demonstrated that maternal DHA supplementation during late gestation and lactation attenuated hyperoxic lung injury in newborn mouse pups. In the present studies, we tested the hypothesis that DHA supplementation to the dam would reduce hyperoxic lung injury and growth deficits in a m

Are maternal psychosocial factors associated with cord immunoglobulin E in addition to family atopic history and mother immunoglobulin E?

BACKGROUND: Atopy in maternal and family histories is known to be a risk factor for elevated umbilical cord immunoglobulin E (cIgE). However, the association between cIgE and psychosocial factors remains under investigation. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether psychosocial factors in addition to atopy contribute to elevated cIgE. METHODS: Four private maternity hospitals fitting the quantile levels of SO(2) in 2000 cooperated with us by recruiting participants for this study: pairs of mothers and neonates living within 3-km catchment areas of air-monitoring stations. We used a questionnaire to col

Maternal-newborn human immunodeficiency virus infection in Harlem.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection and its association with illicit drug use for mothers being delivered of infants at an inner-city municipal hospital. METHODS: We anonymously tested the umbilical cord blood for HIV-1 antibody of 98.1% (2971/3028) of singleton infants with birth weight greater than 500 g born during 1989 and linked the results to a maternal-infant database from which all identifying information had been removed. RESULTS: Overall, HIV-1 seroprevalence was 3.3% (99/2971). Among HIV-1-seropositive mothers, 79% (78/99

[Moebius syndrome after maternal misoprostol use].

This case report describes a newborn with clinical and radiological features compatible with Moebius syndrome following first-trimester maternal use of misoprostol intended for medical abortion. Despite early vaginal bleeding, the pregnancy continued and the parents opted to proceed. Prenatal ultrasound showed bilateral clubfeet, and postnatal examination revealed cranial nerve dysfunction, hypotonia, and feeding difficulties. An MRI of the cerebrum demonstrated hypoplasia of the pons, thalamic fusion, and absence of the nervus abducens and nervus facialis, findings that support a diagnosis of

Antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy: pharmacokinetics and transplacental transfer.

Epilepsy represents the most common maternal neurological disorder requiring continuous treatment during pregnancy. Maintaining optimum seizure control is an important objective in pregnancy, and the majority of women with epilepsy will need to continue antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). AEDs are frequently used to treat several other conditions, such as headaches and mood disorders. They have been associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations, minor anomalies, congenital syndrome and development disorders. This risk seems to be higher among women using polypharmacy and valproic acid.

Behavioral and molecular changes in the mouse in response to prenatal exposure to the anti-epileptic drug valproic acid.

Experiments in rodents have indicated that maternal valproic acid (VPA) exposure has permanent adverse effects upon neurological and behavioral development. In humans, prenatal exposure to VPA can induce fetal valproate syndrome, which has been associated with autism. The present study examined mouse pups exposed in utero to VPA, measuring physical development, olfactory discrimination, and social behavior as well as expression of plasticity-related genes, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and NMDA receptor subunits NR2A and NR2B. VPA-exposed mice showed delayed physical development, im

Joint Associations of Plasma Nutritional Biomarkers and Uterine Fibroids with Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy contribute substantially to maternal morbidity and mortality, and occur with increased frequency among women with uterine fibroids. Biomarkers involved in oxidative stress and endothelial function, including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and homocysteine, have been studied in relation to hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, but their relationship to fibroid-associated risk has not been well characterized, particularly in racially and ethnically diverse populations. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a retrospective analysis of the Boston Birth Cohor

[INTERVENTIONS FOR SUPPORTING WOMEN TO STOP SMOKING IN PREGNANCY].

Smoking during pregnancy is a public health problem because of the many adverse effects associated with it. These include intrauterine growth restriction, placenta previa, abruptio placentae, decreased maternal thyroid function, preterm premature rupture of membranes, low birth weight, perinatal mortality, and ectopic pregnancy. An estimated 5-8% of pre-term deliveries, 13-19% of term deliveries of infants with low birth weight, 23-34% cases of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and 5-7% of preterm-related infant deaths can be attributed to prenatal maternal smoking. The risks of smoking dur
