The expression of bone matrix proteins induced by different bioimplants in a rabbit sinus lift model.

This study aimed to analyze the expression of bone matrix proteins and CD31 by immunohistochemistry after maxillary sinus grafting with different bioimplants in a rabbit model. Rabbit demineralized bone matrix (DBM), partially purified bovine bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP), a mixture of BMP with DBM (BMP/DBM), or particulated autogenous bone was grafted into the maxillary sinuses of 42 rabbits. Animals were sacrificed at 2 and 8 weeks. Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate the expression of type 1 collagen (COL1), osteonectin (ON), osteocalcin (OC), bone sialoprotein (BSP), osteopont…

Computer image-guided surgery for total maxillectomy.

In total maxillectomy, the entire upper jaw including the tumor is removed en bloc from the facial skeleton. An intraoperative computed tomographic guidance system (ICTGS) can improve orientation during surgical procedures. However, its efficacy in head and neck surgery remains controversial. This study evaluated the use of an ICTGS in total maxillectomy. Five patients with maxillary sinus neoplasms underwent surgery using a StealthStation ICTGS. The headset was used for anatomic registration during the preoperative CT scan and surgical procedure. The average accuracy was 0.95 mm. The ICTGS pr…

A 9-14 year follow-up of onlay bone grafting in the atrophic maxilla.

Treatment of the atrophic edentulous maxilla is challenging especially when bone graft procedures are necessary. In this study an onlay bone graft, a saddle or veneer, with or without maxillary sinus floor inlay graft, harvested from the anterior iliac crest, in combination with implants was used in the reconstruction of patients with extreme atrophy in their maxillae. The aim was to investigate treatment outcome, and the impact of gender and smoking, in 44 patients in a prospective, long-term, follow-up study concerning implant survival rate and marginal bone loss adjacent to the surfaces of …

Sinusitis in paediatrics.

The authors discuss the problem of the diagnosis of sinusitis in children from the viewpoint of the practising paediatrician, on the basis of 106 children and adolescents aged between 6 and 17 years, and suffering from sinusitis. Maxillary sinusitis (56.5%) and a combination of maxillary and ethmoidal sinusitis (24.5%) were commonest, and pan-sinusitis occurred in about 10% of cases. The commonest complaints in the history were cough, headache, pyrexia and rhinitis. The commonest clinical findings were pharyngitis, retropharyngeal drip, tenderness to pressure over the sinus points, otitis medi…

Low-temperature Versus High-temperature Sintering: Regenerative and Osteoimmunological Insights from Bio-Oss®, Ti-Oss® in Sinus Lift Surgery.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Maxillary sinus floor elevation is a well-established procedure for increasing bone volume in the posterior maxilla, yet the regenerative outcome depends strongly on the choice of grafting material. This clinical study compared a high-temperature sintered xenograft (Bio-Oss®) and a low-temperature processed xenograft (Ti-Oss®) with regard to their regenerative and immunological profiles. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients underwent split-mouth sinus augmentation with both materials, and biopsies were retrieved at 6 months after implant placement. Histological, histomorphomet…

Brain Abscess Caused by Bifidobacterium spp. in a Previously Healthy Adolescent: A Case Report.

Brain abscesses in children are uncommon but serious conditions. Bifidobacterium species, typically considered commensal organisms of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract, are rarely implicated in invasive infections. We present a case of multiple brain abscesses caused by Bifidobacterium spp. in a previously healthy 11-year-old male, secondary to contiguous spread from chronic left-sided paranasal sinusitis with ethmoid bone erosion. Neuroimaging demonstrated left frontal abscesses with marked perilesional edema, ring enhancement and midline shift, together with o

Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS) is a rare tumor characterized by dual differentiation into muscular and neural lineages. Herein, we de … ht nasal vestibule. Imaging studies revealed a mass in the right nasal vestibule extending into the maxillary sinus. Immunohistochemistry showed positivity for αSMA and S-100 but negativity for SOX-10, confirming a diagnosis of BSNS. However, none of the three tested PAX3 fusion genes were detected in this case. Both patients were treated with carbon-ion radiothe …

Pediatric orbital cellulitis: Case report of an unusual etiology and pathogen.

Orbital cellulitis is an uncommon condition with risks to sight and life. As a complication of maxillofacial injuries, the literature suggests this is only possible with fractures or direct inoculation, and there are no reports to the contrary. Here, we make the first report of a possible etiology by which orbital cellulitis developed in a 14-year-old boy even without skin breach or bony fractures; as well as a rare causative pathogen. He presented with facial abscess and progressive orbital cellulitis after blunt facial trauma, requiring functional endoscopic sinus surgery with needle aspirat

[Eight cases of neuroendcrine carcinoma of the head and neck].

Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck is rare, and diagnosis may be difficult. Malignancy is high, as is the incidence of distant metastasis. We reported eight cases of stage IV small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck, all in men with a mean onset age of 62 years (range: 45 to 80 years). Three cases arose from the maxillary sinus, two from the ethmoid sinus, one from the parotid gland, one from the tonsil, and one from the larynx. Histological analysis by hematoxylin-eosin staining tentatively revealed malignant lymphoma and undifferentiated carcinoma in two…

Retrospective Study on the Prevalence of Haller Cells Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The paranasal sinuses are cavities filled with air located within specific bones, namely the frontal, ethmoidal, maxillary, and sphenoidal sinuses. The ethmoidal sinus is composed of three groups: anterior, middle, and posterior, which are found on both sides. Haller cells (HC), also known as infraorbital ethmoid cells, are projections of the anterior ethmoid sinus that extend into the floor of the orbit and the upper part of the maxillary sinus. Infraorbital ethmoid cells have been associated with several disease conditions and symptoms, such as sinusitis, headaches,…
