A method for the simultaneous extraction and HPLC analysis of nitrophenols and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic samples is presented. The efficiency of the solvent extraction and the solid phase extraction (SPE) is compared. The results showed that the polymeric SPE sorbent is the best compromise for the simultaneous extraction of the tested compounds taking into consideration the lipophilicity of PAHs and the polarity of nitrophenols. Cissus quadrangularis is an indigenous plant commonly mentioned in Ayurveda for treatment of gastric ulcers. The ulcer-protective effect of a methanolic extract of C. quadrangularis (CQE) was comparable to that of the reference drug sucralfate. We present measurements of the Nusselt number N as a function of the Rayleigh number R and the Prandtl number sigma in cylindrical cells with aspect ratios gamma = 0.5 and 1.0. An automated sample preparation system has been developed for the determination of cholesterol in a wide range of matrices. Isolation of cholesterol is performed with a robotic arm coupled with a series of modular stations. The effect of the depletion of intercellular lipids from human stratum corneum and shed snake skin on the permeability to salicylic acid (SA) was investigated in vitro. Shed snake skin was used as a model membrane for human stratum corneum. Lipid depletion with a mixture of chloroform and methanol increased the permeability of those skins to the ionized form but not to the unionized form of SA. Moreover, lipid depletion increased dramatically the permeability of shed snake skin to compounds with low lipophilicity, although it did not have a significant effect on the more lipophilic compounds. …

Features are described of a new staining method for the detection of Cryptosporidium oocysts in faeces. Smears, fixed in acid-methanol, are stained with heated safranin and counterstained with methylene blue. Oocysts stain a vivid orange-pink and are easily recognized.
