BACKGROUND: Myocardial flow reserve (MFR) assessment with cardiac positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT) is well established, and quantification relies on commercial software packages. However, for reliable use, repeatability and reproducibility are important. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate and compare between scans and software packages the repeatability and reproducibility of 82Rb-PET/CT estimated MFR.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty healthy volunteers completed two 82Rb-PET/CT rest and adenosine stress scans. syngo.MBF (Siemens), quantitative-gated SPECT (QGS) (Cedar

The in vitro stability of an Ilizarov hybrid external fixator was compared with that of a dorsal 3.5-mm AO T-plate in 8 unpaired, fresh-frozen upper extremities. A specially designed testing device that used computer-controlled pneumatic actuators was used to simulate active finger, wrist, and forearm motions by applying loads to relevant tendons. A comminuted extra-articular distal radius fracture was modelled using a dorsally based wedge osteotomy. Fracture stability was assessed using an electromagnetic tracking device to measure motion across the fracture site after randomized application

BACKGROUND: Approximately 70% of survivors of stroke have problems with arm function. Physiotherapists assess arm functional range of motion (ROM) using either a goniometer or functional questionnaires, which lack objective accuracy and require a skilled physiotherapist. We developed the Track-UL algorithm based on a markerless motion capture system to measure arm ROM.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to measure the agreement between our novel Track-UL algorithm and Kinovea software in assessing arm ROM during functional tasks in the laboratory and home settings.
METHODS: Videos were recorded whi

Background: Restricted ankle dorsiflexion is common in basketball athletes and has been associated with altered lower-limb mechanics and reduced athletic performance. Although ankle joint mobilization is widely used to improve mobility, its effects on athletic performance remain unclear. The aim of this study was to examine whether adding posterior ankle joint mobilization to a structured exercise-based program incorporating eccentric strengthening and stretching improves ankle mobility and athletic performance in basketball athletes with restricted dorsiflexion. Primary outcomes were dorsifle

BACKGROUND: Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is marked by myofascial trigger points and associated fascial adhesions that limit mobility and cause pain, reducing active cervical range of motion (AROM). This study examined differences in upper trapezius fascial displacement between individuals with and without MPS after repeated cervical AROM and analyzed its association with diagnosis, symptom laterality, age, sex, occupation, and symptom chronicity.
METHODS: Twelve researchers-six measuring the superficial fascia and six measuring the deep fascia-all with reliable methods (K ≥ 0.40), analyzed

Radiosurgical hypophysectomy has emerged as a promising noninvasive approach for management of intractable cancer pain, particularly in patients with bone metastases, offering a safer alternative to traditional surgical hypophysectomy. Here, we present the case of a premenopausal woman with metastatic breast cancer who developed severe, refractory pain despite conventional pain management. To alleviate worsening pain, the patient underwent radiosurgical hypophysectomy targeting approximately 8 mm of the inferior pituitary stalk and at least 50% of the pituitary gland, using a single 75.0 Gy fr

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Reducing motion is vital when radiotherapy is used to treat patients with hepatobiliary (HPB) and pancreatic malignancies. Abdominal compression (AC) and breath-hold (BH) techniques aim to minimise respiratory motion, yet their adoption remains limited, and practices vary. This review examines the impact of AC and BH on motion, set-up errors, and patient tolerability in HPB and pancreatic patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review, conducted using PRISMA and PICOS criteria, includes publications from January 2015 to February 2023. Eligible studies focused

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the severity of adhesion between muscles in the shoulder joint using dynamic ultrasonography and to confirm whether adhesions cause range of motion (ROM) restrictions.
METHODS: Twenty-four shoulders from 15 frozen shoulder patients and 24 shoulders from 18 rotator cuff disorder patients were enrolled. We obtained ultrasound video sequences of the subscapularis (SSC) and deltoid muscles during shoulder external rotation. The mean stretching velocities of the deltoid and SSC were subsequently analyzed using a personal computer. If adhesions occurred betw

BACKGROUND Frozen shoulder with limited range of motion is a common and debilitating condition that occurs on the affected side following a stroke. The effectiveness of therapy was reported to be negatively correlated with the complexity of pathogenesis. Prolotherapy involves injection into the joint of a small amount of irritant, such as dextrose, which enhances tissue strength and facilitates healing by targeting joint spaces. The treatment is used to relieve pain. This report describes the effects of combined prolotherapy and physical therapy in a 60-year-old man with left shoulder pain and

BACKGROUND: older adults often fail to reach the recommended amount of physical activity to prevent the age-related decline in metabolic, cardiorespiratory and muscular function. Effective home-based physical training programs could neutralise barriers preventing older adults from being active, and administration/supervision through videoconference may be an optimal solution. The present randomised controlled trial aimed to test the non-inferiority of training program administered through videoconference against the same program administered face-to-face in healthy older adults.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an important management strategy for patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) refractory to conservative management. Postoperative range of motion (ROM) exercise is important to recover patients' activities of daily living. Continuous passive motion (CPM) is a machine that provides passive ROM exercises of the knee joint in a pre-defined arc of motion. The short- and long-term effects of CPM exercise are controversial. We hypothesized that the inconsistent results of the CPM exercise are due to poor fitting of CPM machines and measurement errors. This

OBJECTIVE: Instability of the craniocervical junction (CCJ) is a well-known finding in patients with Down syndrome (DS); however, the relative contributions of bony morphology versus ligamentous laxity responsible for abnormal CCJ motion are unknown. Using finite element modeling, the authors of this study attempted to quantify those relative differences.
METHODS: Two CCJ finite element models were created for age-matched pediatric patients, a patient with DS and a control without DS. Soft tissues and ligamentous structures were added based on bony landmarks from the CT scans. Ligament stiffn

INTRODUCTION: Homework-based rehabilitation programs can help stroke survivors restore upper extremity function. However, compensatory motions can develop without therapist supervision, leading to sub-optimal recovery. We developed a visual feedback system using a live video feed or an avatar reflecting users' movements so users are aware of compensations. This pilot study aimed to evaluate validity (how well the avatar characterizes different types of compensations) and acceptability of the system.
METHODS: Ten participants with chronic stroke performed upper-extremity exercises under three

BACKGROUND: Unstable conditions of the craniocervical junction such as atlanto-occipital dislocation (AOD) or atlanto-axial instability (AAI) are severe injuries with a high risk of tetraplegia or death. Immobilization by a cervical collar to protect the patient from secondary damage is a standard procedure in trauma patients. If the application of a cervical collar to a patient with an unstable craniocervical condition may cause segmental motion and secondary injury to the spinal cord is unknown. The aim of the current study is (i) to analyze compression on the dural sac and (ii) to determine

Motion sickness occurs under a variety of circumstances and is common in the general population. It is usually associated with changes in gastric motility, and hypothermia, which are argued to be surrogate markers for nausea; there are also reports that respiratory function is affected. As laboratory rodents are incapable of vomiting, Suncus murinus was used to model motion sickness and to investigate changes in gastric myoelectric activity (GMA) and temperature homeostasis using radiotelemetry, whilst also simultaneously investigating changes in respiratory function using whole body plethysmo

Manual therapy aims to minimise pain and restore joint mobility and function. Joint mobilisations are integral to these techniques, with anteroposterior (AP) talocrural joint mobilisations purported to increase dorsiflexion range of motion (DF-ROM). This study aimed to determine whether different treatment durations of single grade IV anteroposterior talocrural joint mobilisations elicit statistically significant differences in DF-ROM. Sixteen asymptomatic male football players (age = 27.1 ± 5.3 years) participated in the study. Non-weight bearing (NWB) and weight bearing (WB) DF-ROM was measu

A recent study hypothesized that avian-like wrist folding in quadrupedal dinosaurs could have aided their distinctive style of locomotion with semi-pronated and therefore medially facing palms. However, soft tissues that automatically guide avian wrist folding rarely fossilize, and automatic wrist folding of unknown function in extant crocodilians has not been used to test this hypothesis. Therefore, an investigation of the relative contributions of soft tissues to wrist range of motion (ROM) in the extant phylogenetic bracket of dinosaurs, and the quadrupedal function of crocodilian wrist fol
