BACKGROUND: Postoperative hyperthyroidism occurs in approximately one third of patients following parathyroidectomy due to primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP), but has only rarely been described in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHP). The frequency, course, and laboratory markers of postoperative hyperthyroidism in SHP remain unknown. To investigate the effect of surgical stress on the endocrine pancreas, we evaluated the changes in glucose-stimulated insulin release from the isolated perfused pancreas 4 and 7 days after laparotomy. Four days after laparotomy, insulin response to a glucose load was poor, and integrated insulin release was significantly less in the first and third phase of stimulation than in the normal rats. Postoperative venous infarction following aneurysm surgery was studied in 48 patients with anterior communicating artery aneurysms operated on through the interhemispheric approach at the acute stage of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Three hundred two infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) were treated from 1972 to 1990. One hundred eighteen were treated medically while 184 infants required operation. This study assessed and compared psychiatric morbidity in long-term (five years or longer) renal transplant recipients and patients undergoing hemodialysis.
