OBJECTIVE: A 2016 review of the BC Children's Hospital Cleft Palate - Craniofacial Program (CPP) revealed that one-third of patients met the program's care recommendations and half met the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association guidelines. This study reviews patients on the CPP waitlist and determines median wait times and missed clinical assessments as well as identifies how wait times are influenced by medical complexity, specialized speech service needs, vulnerability, and distance from clinic.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: BC Children's Hospital Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Prog

To shorten the duration of orthodontic treatment it is important not only to reduce risks such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and root resorption, but also to decrease pain and discomfort caused by a fixed appliance. Several studies have investigated the effect of vibration applied to fixed appliances to accelerate tooth movement. Although it was reported that vibration accelerates orthodontic tooth movement by enhancing alveolar bone resorption, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of vibration on osteoclastogenesi

OBJECTIVES: To investigate which surgical technique orthodontists prefer for exposing palatally impacted canines (PICs), and to compare closed exposure and glass-ionomer open exposure (GOPEX) with regard to pre- and post-surgical orthodontic variables.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire with 19 questions and three cases visualising superficial, deep, or medial PICs was sent to 48 orthodontists working in a Swedish county. Sixty case records for patients with unilateral PICs from two centres were analysed; 30 patients having GOPEX (Centre A), and 30 undergoing closed exposure (Centre B). P

BACKGROUND: Correction of deep bite is crucial for maintenance of dental hard and soft tissue structures and for prevention of temporomandibular joint disorders. Exploration of underlying skeletal and dental factors is essential for efficient and individualized treatment planning. To date etiological factors of dental and skeletal deep bite have not been explored in Pakistani orthodontic patients. The objectives of this study were to explore frequencies of dental and skeletal etiological factors in deep bite patients and to determine correlations amongst dental and skeletal etiological factors

In this study, we first investigated the expressions of Jagged1, Notch2, the receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL), and interleukin (IL)-6 in areas of root resorption during experimental tooth movement in rats in vivo. We then assessed the effects of compression force (CF) with or without GSI (an inhibitor of Notch signaling) on Jagged1, RANKL, and IL-6 release from human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells. Twelve male 6-wk-old Wistar rats were subjected to an orthodontic force of 50 g to induce mesially tipping movement of the upper first molars for 7 d. The expression le

Relapse after orthodontic tooth movement is a significant problem in orthodontics. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of the osteoclast inhibitor osteoprotegerin-Fc (OPG-Fc) for inhibiting postorthodontic relapse. Rat maxillary molars were moved mesially and allowed to relapse for 24 days. Low-dose (1 mg/kg) or high-dose (5 mg/kg) OPG-Fc or saline was injected adjacent to the molars during relapse. Tooth movement, micro-CT, histologic bone quality, and serum OPG and TRAP-5b were measured. OPG-Fc injections significantly diminished postorthodontic relapse from 63% (0.78/1.20 …

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this prospective, comparative study was to evaluate the potential of allowing immediate (within 72 hours) loading of palatal implants used for maximum orthodontic anchorage. This is in contrast to the standard protocol calling for a healing period of 12 weeks.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with a mean age of 14.22+/-1.37 years for whom orthodontic treatment with maximum anchorage was indicated were randomized into two groups. In the SB (immediate loading) group (n=8, mean age 14.15+/-1.2 years), the implants were employed to provide maximum anchorage for

Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a novel secreted member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily that negatively regulates osteoclastogenesis. The receptor activator of the NFKB ligand (RANKL) is one of the key regulatory molecules in osteoclast formation and binds to OPG. In this study, it was suggested that OPG and RANKL are involved in alveolar bone remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement. We examined RANKL localization and osteoclast induction in periodontal tissues during experimental movement of incisors in OPG-deficient mice. To produce orthodontic force, an elastic band wa

The purpose of this retrospective study was to quantify and compare the vertical dimensional changes in bialveolar dental protrusion patients undergoing extraction of all four first premolars between the preadjusted edgewise appliance (PEA) and the Begg appliance. The cephalometric records of 55 patients (14 males and 41 females) with Class I bimaxillary protrusion were selected and divided into two groups based on the appliance used, i.e Begg or PEA mechanotherapy. To minimize the effects of growth, the subjects were at least in stage VI of skeletal maturation. The mean age was 18.25 ± 3.2 ye

Palatally displaced canines (PDCs) are a common orthodontic anomaly that frequently require surgical exposure to facilitate orthodontic alignment. Two primary techniques exist: open surgical exposure, where the canine is left to erupt spontaneously, and closed surgical exposure, where an attachment is bonded for immediate orthodontic traction. This meta-analysis aims to compare the efficacy of closed versus open surgical exposure for PDCs regarding pain, surgical time, complications, eruption time, and patient-reported outcomes. We systematically searched the following databases: PubMed, Cochr

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are structural anomalies resulting from the failure of craniofacial prominences to fuse during embryonic development. Orthodontic treatment seeks to address these conditions by improving dentofacial balance and restoring oral function, but long-term post-treatment stability continues to pose a challenge. This systematic review included a literature search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) to identify observational evidence on the stability of orthodontic treatment in CLP. Six studies, comprising three cohort studies a

PURPOSE: The indication for orthodontic treatment in children and adolescents is based on severity of tooth and jaw malocclusions that lead to limitations in oral health-related quality of life (QoL). We have already shown how overbite and overjet deviations negatively affect QoL. However, few studies have investigated the influence of anterior crowding in the upper jaw on QoL.
METHODS: We selected 734 children and adolescents aged 11-14 years from a population-based longitudinal cohort study (LIFE Child). The data used in this study were retrospectively analyzed. Evaluable jaw models were av
