Operational response by firefighters requires an abrupt change from rest to near-maximal physical effort and incorporates almost instant stress management that must be made during extreme heat, limited time and partial information, yet little is known about the coping strategies incorporated to manage the physiological and psychological demands associated with this environment. A sample of 22 UK firefighters took part in focus groups identifying frequently used coping techniques based upon problem-focused and emotion-focused coping methods. Findings suggest problem-orientated coping comprised

Musicians are known to have exceptional sensitivity to sounds, whereas poor phonological representations (or access to these representations) are considered a main characteristic of dyslexic individuals. Though these two characteristics refer to different abilities that are related to non-verbal and verbal skills respectively, the recent literature suggests that they are tightly related. However, there are informal reports of dyslexic musicians. To better understand this enigma, two groups of musicians were recruited, with and without a history of reading difficulties. The pattern of reading d

Evidence from longitudinal cohort studies demonstrates that wheezing that begins in early life and continues into the school years generally persists into adulthood. This persistent wheezing is associated with lung function deficits and airways hyperresponsiveness that appear to be established in the first few years of life. Allergic sensitization early in life, early-life infection with rhinovirus, or colonization with any of a number of bacteria have been associated with increased risk of persistent wheeze. Early life, whether in utero or in the first few years of life, presents a window of

UNLABELLED: Due to its influence on haemophilic arthropathy, the evaluation of knee extensor (K(Ext)) and flexor (K(Flex)) torques plays an important role in the preventive and rehabilitative context of haemophilia. Thus, the present study aimed at investigating maximal static torque (M(Max)) of K(Ext) and K(Flex). 14 boys with haemophilia (8 severe, 6 moderate; age: 11.7 ± 2.8 years; prophylactic treatment > 5 years) and 14 healthy carefully pair-matched controls (age: 11.5 ± 2.7 years) were separately measured for the left and right leg for M(Max). Furthermore, the ratio K(Flex)/K(Ext )was c

Contributions of the Project Competence Longitudinal Study (PCLS) to resilience science and developmental psychopathology are highlighted in this article. Initiated by Norman Garmezy, the PCLS contributed models, measures, and methods, as well as working definitions of concepts like competence, developmental tasks, protective factors, and resilience. Findings from the study corroborated the feasibility of studying adaptation in a normative group of school children, identifying patterns of resilience, competence without major adversity, and maladaptive paths through life. Competence was multidi

CONTEXT: Russia is experiencing an explosive HIV epidemic, and young people aged 15-29 have the highest incidence of infection. Understanding factors associated with condom use in this age-group is important in developing effective prevention interventions.
METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted with 1,203 Muscovites aged 15-29 in September 2002 to assess condom use, HIV knowledge and sexual behavior. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine independent predictors of consistent condom use.
RESULTS: Forty-four percent of sexually experienced respondents reported using cond

BACKGROUND: This study identifies potentially modifiable risk factors for the onset of and chronic victimization from serious physical and sexual dating violence.
METHODS: One thousand two hundred ninety-one 8th and 9th graders from a county in North Carolina were assessed annually for 5 and 4 years, respectively.
RESULTS: For males, having been hit by an adult with the intention of harm, having low self-esteem, and having been in a physical fight with a peer predicted onset of serious physical dating violence victimization. Those variables, plus having a friend who has been a victim of dati

This investigation examined the dimensions of developmental timing, subtype, and severity of maltreatment and their relations with child adaptation. The 814 children who participated in a summer day camp, 492 of whom were maltreated and 322 of whom were nonmaltreated comparison children, were assessed by camp counselors on their internalizing and externalizing symptomatology, aggressive, withdrawn, and cooperative behavior, and on personality dimensions of ego resiliency and ego control, and were rated by peers on disruptive, aggressive, and cooperative behavior. Gingival diseases are a diverse family of complex and distinct pathological entities found within the gingiva that are the result of a variety of etiologies. There are several clinical characteristics common to all gingival diseases and these features include clinical signs of inflammation, signs and symptoms that are confined to the gingiva, reversibility of the disease by removing the etiology, the presence of bacterial laden plaque to initiate and/or exacerbate the severity of the disease and a possible role as a precursor for attachment loss around teeth. Defining and classifying gingival

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) commonly affects the lower extremity and occurs due to the narrowing or blockage of vessels carrying blood from the heart to the legs. This review aims to examine racial and ethnic disparities in the diagnosis and management of PAD among adults in the United States by summarizing differences in diagnostic evaluation, treatment utilization, and management outcomes. A search was done from inception to the 18th of November 2025 across PubMed and Google Scholar, and 1,372 articles were generated. Eight articles were included for the final analysis after applying the

OBJECTIVES: During the COVID-19 pandemic, National Health Service staff support services were implemented to promote healthcare workers' (HCWs) well-being, alongside informal support from colleagues and managers. Certain groups may be less likely to access support, including HCWs from ethnic minority and migrant groups. These HCWs are more likely to experience discrimination and abuse at work, which may also erode access to positive and protective resources. Therefore, this study examined variation in formal support programme use and perceptions of support from managers and colleagues by ethni

BACKGROUND: After the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a 53% increase in overdose deaths in the U.S., with the highest rates among American Indian/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) individuals compared with all racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. Historical trauma has been linked to substance use among AI/AN individuals. First cited in the 1990s, historical trauma is an intergenerational response to the loss of AI/AN communities' land, peoples, and culture secondary to colonization in North America. Two-Eyed Seeing is the gift of multiple perspectives treasured by many Indigenous peoples, which

Regular physical activity for adults is associated with optimal appetite regulation, though little work has been performed in adolescents. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted a study examining appetite across a range of physical activity and adiposity levels in adolescent males. Healthy males (n 46, 14-18 years old) were recruited across four body weight and activity categories: normal weight/high active (n 11), normal weight/low active (n 13), overweight, obese/high active (n 14), overweight and obese/low active (n 8). Participants from each group completed a 6-h appetite asse

BACKGROUND: Demographic enrollment disparities in adult acute leukemia clinical trials limit generalizability and diminish opportunities for minoritized populations to benefit from novel therapies. The distinct natural history and clinical research landscape of acute leukemia, the latter of which is centralized at the National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCCs), pose challenges to eliminating this disparity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an analysis of 2 qualitative focus group and interview-based studies to characterize barriers and facilitators to represen

Falling has become a significant factor in the mortality of elderly people. Little is known about whether sarcopenia can be a risk factor for falls in older adults. This study aims to assess the association between sarcopenia and falls among older Chinese according to the updated diagnostic guidelines of the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019). We used data from the 2011 baseline and 2015 follow-up survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). This study examined the relationship between sarcopenia status and falls through cross-sectional analysis. Cox p
