Pregnancy outcome after cervical conisation: a retrospective cohort study in the Leuven University Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To assess pregnancy outcome after conisation. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Belgium, data from a university hosp … 55 (0%); P = 0.031] deliveries in the study group were significantly higher. There were no cases of perinatal mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Conisation affects obstetrical outcome after conisation for CIN. Babies tend to be born earlier and are smaller. It is not clear whether this is related to the procedure or to factors linked with CIN.

A preliminary study on chromosome aneuploidy & mosaicism in early pre-implantation human embryo by fluorescence in situ hybridization.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Chromosome aneuploidy plays an important role in infertility, early pregnancy wastage and perinatal mortality. Cytogenetic & fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) studies on developmentally arrested and morphologically poor embryo have shown high frequency of chromosomal abnormality and mosaicism. In this study, we attempted to evaluate chromosome aneuploidy and mosaicism on human embryos through the use of FISH. METHODS: Sixty one grade IV un-transferable embryos were obtained from 25 patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Forty six embryos were studied …

Intraventricular hemorrhage in very low birth weight infants. Associated risk factors in Isfahan, Iran.

OBJECTIVE: Prematurely born infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) suffer significant morbidity and mortality, particularly those infants with high-grade hemorrhage. Previous studies have proposed a number of risk factors for IVH; however, lack of adequate matching for gestational age and birth weight may have confounded the results. The purpose of this study was to identify variables that affect the risk of IVH. METHODS: We identified 31 preterm infants with gestational age <32 weeks and birth weight <1500 g, with IVH, from November 2003 to January 2005 at Alzahra University Hospital

Impact of maternal age on obstetric outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of maternal age on obstetric outcomes. METHODS: A prospective database from a multicenter investigation o … sed risk for abruption (adjOR 2.3), preterm delivery (adjOR 1.4), low birth weight (adjOR 1.6), and perinatal mortality (adjOR 2.2) was noted in women aged 40 years and older. CONCLUSION: Increasing maternal age is independently associated with specific adverse pregnancy outcomes. Increasing age is a continuum rather than a threshold effect.

Neonatal outcome in pregnancies after preterm delivery for HELLP syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To compare neonatal outcome after preterm delivery of infants where pregnancy had been complicated by the HELLP syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: The maternal and neonatal charts of 475 consecutive pregnancies complicated by hypertensive disorders at our perinatal unit were reviewed. The HELLP syndrome was defined by previously published laboratory criteria. 93 women fulfilled the criteria and constituted our HELLP syndrome study group. 188 normotensive patients who were delivered because of preterm labor comprised the control group. Results were compared by means of chi2 analysis and Studen

Do very sick neonates born at term have antenatal risks? 1. Infants ventilated primarily for problems of adaptation to extra-uterine life.

AIMS: 1. Ascertain antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for term neonates ventilated primarily for 'perinatal asphyxia'. 2. Describe the neonatal morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Population-based case control cohort study. SETTING: Sydney and four large rural/urban health areas in New South Wales. SUBJECTS: Singleton term infants, no major congenital anomaly: subset of 83 infants ventilated primarily for 'asphyxia' from 182 cases admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for mechanical ventilation, 550 randomly selected controls. Outcome. Risk factors for case status by

Causes of and risk factors for asphyxia neonatorum in sub-Saharan Africa: a study protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Asphyxia neonatorum (AN) is a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, accounting for nearly one quarter of the 2.3 million neonatal deaths reported in 2023. The burden is disproportionately high in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where neonatal mortality rates linked to AN exceed global averages. Despite numerous studies, evidence on the underlying causes and risk factors of AN in SSA remains fragmented and inconsistently reported. A clear distinction between causes and risk factors is essential to inform prevention, diagnosis and management strategies for AN in th

Risks of Cannabinoid Exposure on Birth Outcomes: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: With the changing legal landscape, the acceptance and availability of cannabis products have increased. Cannabis products are generally considered "natural" and relatively safe by consumers. However, growing empirical evidence from humans and other animals indicates that cannabis negatively affects human health. In contrast to the well-known teratogenic effects of alcohol and tobacco products, the safety of cannabis product use during pregnancy has not yet been established. The goal of this systematic review was to determine the patterns that exist in human and rodent literature

Socioeconomic inequities during COVID 19 pandemic increase preterm birth and low birth weight in the most underprivileged.

BACKGROUND: The mitigation measures implemented to face the healthcare emergency brought by COVID 19 pandemic generated an increase in socioeconomic inequities in the most underprivileged population which is also the most threatened in their human rights. In Uruguay, this population is assisted in the public health care system. To analyze how these measures impacted on these mothers and their neonates we selected outcomes that most contributed to neonatal mortality. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the incidence of Preterm Birth (PB), Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and Low Birth Weight (LBW) in

Prevention of Congenital Syphilis Through Antenatal Screenings in Lusaka, Zambia: A Systematic Review.

Congenital syphilis is one of the preventable diseases caused by the gram-negative bacteria Treponema pallidum; yet, it imposes a serious global health and economic burden, with more than half of the cases resulting in serious adverse outcomes, including infant mortality. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of syphilis is estimated at 3.6 million adjusted life years (DALYs) and around $309 million in medical costs. In 2006, an estimated 9.7 million children of age less than five years died in developing countries; almost four million were neonatal deaths. There were 3.2 million stillbirths glo

Effects of inhaled nitric oxide in neonatal hypoxemic respiratory failure from a multicenter controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxemic respiratory failure (HRF) is one of the most common causes for neonatal infants requiring aggressive respiratory support. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) has been established routinely as an adjunct to conventional respiratory support in developed countries. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of iNO in neonates with HRF in resource limited condition with no or limited use of surfactant, high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. METHODS: A non-randomized, open, controlled study of efficacy of iNO was conducted over 18

The implications of autoimmunity and pregnancy.

There are multiple epidemiological studies that document the potential adverse affects of autoimmunity on nearly every aspect of reproductio … jor complications. These complications include disease exacerbations during gestation and increased perinatal mortality and morbidity in most autoimmune diseases, whereas fetal mortality is characteristic of the anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS). In this review, we will discuss these topics, including issues of hormones, along with potential long-term effects of the m …

Prevalence of neural tube defects at Debre Berhan Referral Hospital, North Shewa, Ethiopia. A hospital based retrospective cross-section study.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defect (NTD) is a structural defect of the central nervous system of the developing embryo during the first month of developmental process. Most congenital malformations are potentially preventable cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Worldwide, around 10% of infant mortalities are due to nervous system defects. In Ethiopia there are limited published data regarding the prevalence and established preventive strategy of NTDs. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of NTDs among pregnancy outcomes in Debre Berhan Referral Hospital (DBRH), Ethiopia.

Associations between early term and late/post term infants and development of epilepsy: A cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While life-long impacts exist for infants born one or two weeks early little evidence exists for those infants born after their due date. However interventions could be used to expedite birth if the risks of continuing the pregnancy are higher than intervening. It is known that the risk of epilepsy in childhood is higher in infants exposed to perinatal compromise and therefore may be useful as a proxy for intrapartum compromise. The aim of this work is to quantify the likelihood of children developing epilepsy based on their gestational age at birth (37-39 weeks or ≥41 weeks). MET

Ageing in Portugal: regional iniquities in health and health care.

The health of the Portuguese has improved considerably in the last twenty years. Economic and social transformations that have contributed to the progressive amelioration of problems of feeding, sanitation, hygiene, housing and social conditions in general, as well as health services, have had decisive effect on this phenomenon. The spectacular regression of the indicators related to transmitted diseases, infant, perinatal (more than 50% between 1985 and 1994) and maternal mortality, and the mortality of children 1 to 4 yr old, also reflects this impact. The positive changes that took place in

The perimenopause and contraception.

OBJECTIVES: To review the implications of pregnancy in women in their forties and the contraceptive options open to them. METHOD: Medline and popline reviews of the literature. RESULTS: Women in their forties are still potentially fertile, and pregnancy in this age group is attended with increased maternal mortality, spontaneous abortion, fetal anomalies and perinatal mortality. In developing countries, these risks are compounded by high parity and poor medical care. Contraception for women in this age group has special risks and benefits, both should be balanced to choose between the differ…
