[Research advances in nerve transfer for upper limb function restoration: applications from peripheral nerve injury to central nervous system injury].

OBJECTIVE: To review recent research progress on nerve transfer for the reconstruction of upper limb function following peripheral nerve injury and central nervous system injury. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of recent domestic and international literature on nerve transfer was conducted. The evolution of nerve transfer surgery from its application in peripheral nerve injuries to its extension to central nervous system injuries was described. The current therapeutic status of nerve transfer in upper limb hemiplegia resulting from spinal cord injury and brain injury was discussed, and the

Brain plasticity in Möbius syndrome after unilateral muscle transfer: case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Möbius syndrome is mainly characterized by bilateral facial palsy. Facial reanimation of these children is achieved by microsurgical techniques, namely free-gracilis muscle innervated by the masseteric nerve. Notorious commissure excursion and speech improvement are reported with such procedure. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of cortical reorganization after injury and repair of different segments of the body. Intensive training of a behaviorally relevant task is key in this process. CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old patient with complete bilateral facial palsy secondary t

Tissue engineered bone versus alloplastic commercial biomaterials in craniofacial reconstruction.

This research was developed in order to demonstrate the tissue engineering method as an alternative to conventional methods for bone reconstruction, in order to overcome the frequent failures of alloplastic commercial biomaterials, allografts and autografts. Tissue engineering is an in vitro method used to obtain cell based osteoinductive bone grafts. This study evaluated the feasibility of creating tissue-engineered bone using mesenchymal cells seeded on a scaffold obtained from the deciduous red deer antler. We have chosen mesenchymal stem cells because they are easy to obtain, capable to di

An Incidence of Duplicated Princeps Pollicis and Radialis Indicis Arteries.

The princeps pollicis artery (PPA) is typically a direct branch off the deep palmar arterial arch. Identified is a 90-year-old female cadaver in which the right hand has a duplicated PPA and radialis indicis (RI) artery. These vessels originate from the superficial palmar arterial arch as variant vessels as well as from the deep palmar arterial arch. The superficial arch appears in its classic pattern, while the duplicate PPA and RI present at the radial aspect of the superficial arch in the volar first web space with clear communication to the superficial radial artery. There are many common

[Degloving injuries of the lower limb].

Although seldom dangerous to life, these degloving injuries are all potentially infected and, unless treated as acute surgical emergencies, inevitably lead to serious complications. Diagnostic is done according to a standardized protocol, which eventually must be integrated in the standard polytrauma management. Multidisciplinary (orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, physiotherapy) defect management is of utmost importance and requires an "integrated therapy concept". The success or failure of primary treatment of degloving injuries is determined by an adequate primary care includ

Aesthetic surgical training in the UK independent sector--the clients' view: Results of a survey on 155 private patients.

As training opportunities in cosmetic surgery become less frequent in teaching hospitals, this survey set out to examine the attitudes of patients towards extending this training into the independent health sector. We questioned 155 private patients, 95% of who were happy for trainees to sit in during their consultations. Of these, 85% were comfortable with the presence of the trainee throughout their appointments and 92% said they saw advantages in having such trainees present. However, patients were less enthusiastic about trainees carrying out procedures, under consultant supervision and fo

Craniofacial surgery in children: concepts and questions.

Craniofacial surgery is an exciting new subspecialty of medicine. It is strictly a team project that will function well only in a tertiary medical center. Particular coordination is needed among the plastic surgeon, neurosurgeon, anesthesiologist, and pediatrician. This article considers many of the potential advantages and some of the disadvantages of performing craniofacial surgery on infants. It is difficult or impossible, based on current knowledge, to predict the ultimate limits of such new techniques. The history of surgical evolution, however, continues to demonstrate that what "at firs

The functionally based Leipzig concept for the treatment of patients with cleft lip, alveolus and palate.

In the year 1994 the former GDR cleft centre was integrated into the Department of Maxillofacial and Facial Plastic Surgery of the University of Leipzig. The treatment scheme of functional surgery according to DELAIRE was introduced to this new cleft and craniofacial centre at the University of Leipzig. The interdisciplinary team of specialists meets twice a week during a cleft clinic and takes care of about 900 out-patients per year. In the last decade an average of 40-50 new patients (infants) were admitted for in-patient primary surgery. Lip repair with reconstruction of the perinasal and p

Pectoralis major ruptures postsuction lipectomy for surgical management of gynecomastia.

Over the last decade, suction-assisted lipoplasty has been shown to be a safe and reliable procedure in the hands of trained individuals. A large number of plastic surgeons employ liposuction as an adjunct to surgery for gynecomastia with excellent results and low morbidity. An unusual problem, traumatic rupture of the pectoralis major muscle, has been observed by us in a patient who had undergone the procedure. The physical deficit arising from the injury may go unnoticed in all but the most physically active people, and surgeons should be wary of the possibility of this previously unreported

Unusual Aspergillus Infection After Dermal Filler Injection.

According to a great desire for facial rejuvenation, dermal filler is promising for improving people's appearance without surgery. In a society of plastic surgery, injection of dermal filler is one of the most common procedures for a younger appearance. An increase in patients who have filler injection has been paralleled by a rise in various adverse reactions. Formation of inflammatory or infected nodules is one of the most common long-term complications. Infections can be increased because of improper disinfection of the patient's skin, a poor injection technique, decreased general immunity,

Malignant hyperthermia in the head and neck surgery patient: an update and review.

Malignant hyperthermia, a disorder often initiated by exposure to a variety of anesthetic agents, continues to be of major importance to the head and neck surgeon because: 1. approximately 40% of all reported reactions have occurred during anesthesia for head and neck surgery; 2. the possibility of mortality still exists despite the use of new pharmacologic agents, such as dantrolene; and, 3. subtle variations in the intraoperative and postoperative presentation of malignant hyperthermia are being increasingly recognized and treated. The authors briefly tabulate the 280 cases--which have occur

A method to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leakage: Reinforcing acellular dermal matrix.

In neurosurgical cases, problems related to wound healing can vary from simple wound dehiscence to multilayer defects. This study demonstrates an effective method to prevent persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage using reinforcing acellular dermal matrix in neurosurgical patients with wound dehiscence. A 52-year-old woman was admitted for management of recurrent glioblastoma. After tumor removal surgery, the patient experienced sustained CSF leakage from the wound despite reparative attempts. The plastic surgery team performed wound repair procedure after remnant tumor removal by the neu

The diagnosis and treatment of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

BACKGROUND: Little is written in the plastic surgery literature about thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO), a condition that is separate from Graves-Basedow disease and may not be accompanied by hyperthyroidism. Many patients with this disease frequently seek periocular aesthetic reconstruction prior to medical workup. METHODS: This study presents a comprehensive review of the literature surrounding TAO in order to better understand the prevalence, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and appropriate management of TAO. RESULTS: TAO is frequently under- or misdiagnosed by health-care providers. Pat

Cranio-caudal transdomal sutures for the nasal tip correction.

The goal of the nasal tip plastic surgery is to reduce or increase, change the shape or/and projection, rotation and contour the tip. This report presents our technique for the reduction and lifting of the nasal tip with a proportional reduction (trim) of the alar cartilage and suture technique--cranio-caudal transdomal sutures. The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the effectiveness of three tipplasty suture techniques to modify nasal tip projection and rotation. Our research is based on 297 operated patients, 165 of them were women (55, 5%) and 132 were men (44, 5%). Rhinoseptoplas

Robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy with venous resection and reconstruction: a systematic review of perioperative, vascular, oncological and survival outcomes.

Robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy with venous resection and reconstruction (RPD-VR) is one of the most technically challenging procedures in hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery. While acceptance of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy is growing, the safety, feasibility, and oncologic adequacy of combined portal vein (PV) and/or superior mesenteric vein (SMV) resection remain incompletely defined. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception of the databases to June 2026. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to

Single-stage versus staged reconstruction for high and intermediate anorectal malformations in neonates: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The surgical approach to high and intermediate anorectal malformations remains controversial. This systematic review compared continence and infection outcomes between the two approaches. MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched per a registered protocol (PROSPERO CRD420261291319). Comparative studies of single-stage versus staged repair in neonates with high or intermediate anorectal malformations were included. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I. Random-effects meta-analysis with prediction intervals was performed. Four comparative studies (746 patients: 399 single-stage, 34
