Longitudinal Study of Sexual Dysfunction in Men and Women with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Initiating Biologic or Small Molecule Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience increased rates of sexual dysfunction (SD). This study investigated SD longitudinally in patients initiating a biologic or small molecule therapy. METHODS: Patients with Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC) starting biologic or small molecule therapy were surveyed at induction, 2 months, and 6 months. Measures included the IBD-Female and Male Sexual Dysfunction Scales (FSDS, MSDS), PROMIS Sexual Function and Satisfaction Brief Profile, Harvey Bradshaw Index (HBI), Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index (SCCAI), p

Walk a mile in my old shoes: an intervention study on age simulation suit training for correctional staff.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Correctional populations are ageing rapidly, yet correctional staff often lack the knowledge and attitudinal competencies required to address ageing-related needs. While simulation technologies, such as simulation suits, have demonstrated improvements in cognitive and affective learning outcomes within educational and clinical healthcare settings, their application in correctional training remains unexplored. This study examined the feasibility and exploratory outcomes of a training program incorporating ageing simulation into correctional staff training. RESEARCH D

Interdisciplinary Strategies for Improving Oral Health in Older Adults: A Comprehensive Review.

Oral health in older adults is a critical component of overall well-being requiring integrated, interdisciplinary approaches to address its complex interplay of medical, functional, and psychosocial challenges. The aim of this is to examine strategies to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration among dental professionals, physicians, nurses, nutritionists, and caregivers to improve oral health outcomes in aging populations. Older adults commonly face dental problems such as periodontal disease which can be exacerbated by polypharmacy, systemic diseases, and barriers to accessing care. These mul

Differences across males and females in cognitive aging and mortality risk: a trajectory-based approach.

This study examined hypothesized differences across males and females in the relationship between cognitive trajectories and mortality in older adults. Data were drawn from the ZARADEMP study on dementia and depression in adults aged 55 and older in Zaragoza, Spain. A total of 2403 cognitively healthy individuals who completed at least three of four waves over a 12-year follow-up were included. Cognitive trajectories were derived from Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Using growth mixture modeling (GMM), four trajectories in men and three in women were previously identified. Mortali

Living with the Unknown: Intolerance of Uncertainty in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is marked by pervasive uncertainty due to fluctuating motor and non-motor symptoms, variable treatment response, and an unpredictable clinical course. Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), a tendency to perceive ambiguity as threatening and respond with worry, avoidance, or decisional paralysis, may be consequential in PD, yet lacks a PD-focused synthesis. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize conceptual, qualitative, and emerging quantitative literature on IU in idiopathic PD, describe clinical and psychosocial correlates across the illness trajectory, and identify implica

Singing-Based Interventions for Treating Hypokinetic Dysarthria in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) progressively affects motor functions, often resulting in hypokinetic dysarthria, characterized by reduced speech articulation and vocal intensity. Over the last few decades, singing-based interventions have demonstrated potential therapeutic benefits for treating neurological speech disorders. To review the effectiveness of singing-based interventions in treating hypokinetic dysarthria, articles were identified based on a search across MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. After being independently screened by the authors, the information was rev

Mapping links between childhood maltreatment and biopsychosocial health in pregnancy: a network analysis.

PURPOSE: Child maltreatment experiences may impact both mental and physical health in pregnancy and are associated with increased interpersonal difficulties. However, facets of psychosocial and physical health are interrelated, making it difficult to identify effects of maltreatment experiences. Therefore, this study aims to improve our understanding of how experiences of childhood maltreatment are associated with perinatal bio-psycho-social health employing an exploratory network approach. The analysis focused on whether there are differential effects of maltreatment subtypes, namely physical

Feedback, feelings, and function: Interpersonal contexts and body image in adolescent girls' sport.

Participation in sport during adolescence offers numerous physical and psychosocial benefits, yet many girls disengage, often due to body image concerns. Body-related self-conscious emotions-such as shame, guilt, envy, embarrassment, and pride-may influence sport experiences and participation, but little is known about how the interpersonal sport context shapes these emotions. This study examined how 12 dimensions of the interpersonal sport context were associated with body-related self-conscious emotions among adolescent girl athletes, drawing on the tripartite influence model of body image a

KATP channel functional remodeling is associated with neuroinflammatory and dopaminergic alterations under metabolic stress in female mice.

Metabolic stress and neuroinflammation are associated with depression, but the mechanisms connecting peripheral metabolic dysfunction to reward-related circuit alterations remain incompletely understood. ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels couple cellular energy state to neuronal excitability and may link metabolic and neuroimmune signaling. Here, we used female mice exposed to post-weaning isolation combined with a high-fat diet to model convergent psychosocial and metabolic stress. We tested whether KATP channel modulation is associated with behavioral, inflammatory, and dopaminergic-mar

Situational burden and challenges faced by informal caregivers of post-stroke patients: A narrative review.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term functional disability and often requires caregiver support during recovery. Informal caregivers of post-stroke patients face multiple challenges related to medical and nursing competence, workload, and access to information. These challenges remain insufficiently explored and inadequately addressed in healthcare systems. Using predefined criteria, we searched PubMed and Google Scholar for English-language studies involving human participants and published between January 2015 and August 2025 on issues related to informal caregiving. After initial abstract

Development and validation of a novel risk stratification tool for patients 65 years and older undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: Current preoperative risk tools assess frailty, nutrition, and acute illness separately, limiting accuracy. This study aimed to create and validate a composite risk score for adults ≥65 undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty for primary osteoarthritis. METHODS: A retrospective study of 10,061 patients from the ACS NSQIP (2015-2021) was conducted. A composite score combining ASA class, Risk Analysis Index, and acute conditions was developed via multivariable logistic regression. Outcomes included 30-day mortality, complications, readmission, reoperation, extended stay, and non-home di

The Association of Dysphagia with Social Isolation, Mental Health, and Cognition in Older Adults.

Dysphagia is increasingly recognized in older adults and is known to have significant implications for quality of life. Prior research has suggested a complicated interplay between social isolation, mental health, and cognitive decline, with dysphagia potentially serving as a mediator within this cycle. In this study, we used two nationally representative datasets: Wave 1 (2008-2011) of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS) and the 1999-2000 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), to evaluate associations between dysphagia and depression, a

The Impact of Diet on Long-Term Oncological Outcomes: Investigating Nutritional Mechanisms in Cancer Prevention Management and Prognosis.

Long-term oncological outcomes are significantly influenced by dietary patterns and nutritional status. Emerging evidence suggests that specific nutrients and dietary behaviors modulate the biological pathways involved in cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic response. Understanding these nutritional mechanisms is essential for optimizing cancer prevention strategies, improving treatment efficacy, and enhancing long-term prognosis. Dieting is a modifiable factor influencing cancer prevention, progression, and survivorship. This review is a molecular, clinical, and epidemiological dat

Gene silencing meets chemotherapy: A dual topical strategy using lipid nanoparticles against squamous cell carcinoma.

The rising incidence of skin cancer represents a significant public health challenge, not only due to its clinical burden but also its psychosocial implications, necessitating the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Gene therapy-based interventions, particularly those employing multifunctional delivery systems, have shown promise in enhancing antitumor efficacy. Here, we present a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) engineered for the topical co-delivery of Bcl-2-targeting siRNA and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). The NLCs exhibited a mean particle size of ∼200 nm, a PdI of 0.25, and a zet

Frailty and lived experiences in older adults with osteoporosis: protocol for a convergent mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults is characterized by an age-related decline in bone mineral density. Frailty-a distinct age-associated geriatric syndrome-further exacerbates this condition. The concomitance of osteoporosis and frailty in older adults markedly heightens the risk of functional decline, with attendant profound psychosocial sequelae. A mixed-methods study design is essential to achieve a comprehensive, patient-centered understanding of this phenomenon. METHODS: This study will adopt a convergent mixed-methods design comprising three primary phases: (1) Quantitative phase: a cross-section
