Prevalence of Foot At-Risk and its Associated Characteristics among Outpatients with Diabetes Mellitus in a Peruvian Public Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of patients at risk of developing diabetic foot complications(i.e.foot at-risk) and its clinical components according to the updated International Working Group on Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) criteria and to describe demographic and diabetes-related characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at María Auxiliadora Hospital between 2017 and 2018. The criteria for foot at-risk in the IWGDF 2019 risk stratification system are classified into four risk categories, R0-R3, ranging from no peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and no peripheral neuropathy (

INTRODUCTION: Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a special subtype of AMD, which is one of the leading threats to vision health worldwide. At this time, many aspects of PCV, from how it works to potential treatments, remain a mystery. In this study, we explored the frontier researches and revealed the study trends within the study of PCV. METHODS: We collected all the publications in this field from 2001 to 2020, analyzed trends within them, and defined the contributions of various countries/regions, institutions, authors, and journals. Additionally, VOSviewer software was used to def…

Achieving UNAIDS Viral Suppression Goal: Experience from a Tertiary Care Public Hospital, Western India.

INTRODUCTION: Targeted HIV 1 viral load testing has been recommended in 2010 only for suspected cases of antiretroviral therapy failure. India is committed to achieve UNAIDS '90-90-90' target by 2020. The third 90 target was to ensure all people receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) are virologically suppressed. Implementation of routine viral load testing in national programme helps us in assessing early treatment failure and the need to switch to second line therapy; thus eventually reducing drug resistance and improving patient outcomes. AIMS: Study was aimed to determine the proportion o

Epidemiological study of gastrointestinal helminths among dogs from Northeastern Nigeria: a potential public health concern.

Understanding the epidemiology of canine parasitic infections, gastrointestinal helminthic infections in particular, is crucial for designing an efficient control programs targeted at minimizing the risks of zoonotic transmission. A total of 470 dogs attending veterinary clinics in Northeastern Nigeria were screened for gastrointestinal helminths using standard parasitological techniques. Epidemiological risk factors associated with the canine parasitic infections were assessed using multivariable logistic regression analysis. In total, 77.9% (366/470) of dogs had harboured one or more species

Unraveling the distinctive venomous features of the saturniid Hylesia sp.: An integrative approach of a public health concern in Argentina.

The saturniid genus Hylesia is well known for the cutaneous lepidopterism induced by airborne setae on contact with the skin. Although several cases of such dermatitis have been reported in Argentina, no information about their venoms and toxicological implications on human health is available yet. Thus, we conducted a morphological analysis of the setae/spines and a toxinological characterization (through biological assays and proteomic techniques) of the bristle extract from caterpillars and moths of Hylesia sp. from Misiones, Argentina. By scanning electron microscopy, we revealed the vario

Lost Lessons of the 1918 Influenza: The 1920s Working Hypothesis, the Public Health Paradigm, and the Prevention of Deadly Pandemics.

In standard historical accounts, the hyperlethal 1918 flu pandemic was inevitable once a novel influenza virus appeared. However, in the years following the pandemic, it was obvious to distinguished flu experts from around the world that social and environmental conditions interacted with infectious agents and could enhance the virulence of flu germs. On the basis of the timing and geographic pattern of the pandemic, they hypothesized that an "essential cause" of the pandemic's extraordinary lethality was the extreme, prolonged, and industrial-scale overcrowding of US soldiers in World War I,

When there is no communication between urban planners and public health operators: urban Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans.

At the international level, it is necessary to apply urban health strategies that can integrate concrete actions to protect and promote health in urban and architectural planning. In cities, the "urban fauna" mostly consists of synanthropic birds (sparrows, starlings, swallows, martins, jackdaws, crows, hawks, gulls, pigeons) that have adapted to a continuous relationship with humans. These animals enrich the ecological network of biodiversity but also pose health problems. The most successful avian colonizers are pigeons (Columba livia), which proliferate due to the abundance of foo

The Public Health Role of Medical Examiner Offices During COVID-19 and Other Mass Fatality Events.

The public health role of a medical examiner office (MEO) in a pandemic is largely undefined; however, death data may be useful in strategic planning. Deaths reportable to MEO are defined in statute, with discretion as to the assumption of jurisdiction. We analyzed the daily reported death numbers (DRDNs) in our jurisdiction from March 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, and compared them with hospital admission and COVID-19 fatality data over the same period. The DRDN from an MEO is easily obtained and may be useful as a supplemental and surrogate metric in certain pandemic mass casualty decisions. H

In My New Home: The Daily Lives of People Living in Public Houses after a Long Period of Homelessness.

Homelessness refers to a loss of social relationships and a condition of isolation and stigma that affects a person's well-being. Although the literature has revealed the crucial role of a home in a person's well-being, few studies have explored the daily lives of people who transition from homeless services to an independent home. People who experience homelessness are at risk of remaining connected to homeless services even after finding a home. This study aimed to explore the daily lives of people who have obtained public housing, focusing on their daily relationships and the places they fr

Viral Breakthrough Episodes Among Persons with HIV in Care in Alberta, Canada: Clinical and Public Health Implications.

Unsuppressed HIV viremia damages immunity and increases the risk for secondary HIV transmission. Successful engagement of persons with HIV (PWH) into care resulting in viral suppression is vital. PWH already engaged in care, who, after achieving viral suppression, experience viral breakthrough episodes (VBEs) with a sequence of suppressed/unsuppressed/suppressed viral loads remain problematic. We examined the frequency and outcomes of PWH experiencing VBE. HIV care is provided at no cost to all patients under Alberta's universal health program. All PWH followed at Southern Alberta Clinic, Cana

Public perceptions of the association between drug effectiveness and drug novelty in France during the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVES: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, public debates overtly addressed the promises of new innovative drugs. Many of these debates pitted those who advocated for the development of new drugs by pharmaceutical companies against those who favored the repositioning of existing drugs. Our study explored perceptions of the association between drug novelty and effectiveness as well as perceptions of the role of the pharmaceutical industry in drug development. METHODS: Data were collected in January 2021 from a quota sample of the French population aged 18-75years (n=1

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis of the Implementation of Public Health Policies on HTLV-1 in Brazil.

Human T lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1) is a public health issue for most countries and imposes important consequences on patients' health and socioeconomic status. Brazil is one of the global leaders of the public health response to these viruses. The country has challenges to overcome to implement meaningful policies aiming to eliminate HTLV-1/2. An analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) for the implementation of public health policies on HTLV-1/2 was performed. The strengths identified were the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS); Brazilian expertise in public

Lessons learnt from the implementation of a colorectal cancer screening programme for lynch syndrome in a tertiary public hospital.

BACKGROUND: Lynch syndrome (LS) is the first cause of inherited colorectal cancer (CRC), being responsible for 2-4% of all diagnoses. Identification of affected individuals is important as they have an increased lifetime risk of multiple CRC and other neoplasms, however, LS is consistently underdiagnosed at the population level. We aimed to evaluate the yield of LS screening in CRC in a single-referral centre and to identify the barriers to its effective implementation. METHODS: LS screening programme included individuals with CRC < 70 years, multiple CRC, or endometrial cancer at any age. Mi

An evaluation of the impact of COVID-19 safety measures in public transit spaces on riders' Worry of virus contraction.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought about global change in travel behavior. Transit ridership volumes have dropped to record lows. Concerning environmental, health, and social consequences lie in store if transit networks are not able to regain a substantial portion of pre-pandemic users. Transit providers have implemented several interventions aimed at both slowing the spread of the virus and retaining riders as travel restrictions lift. While the effectiveness of these measures has been evaluated with respect to spread rate reduction, little consideration has been given to their impact on r

Effects of strict public health measures on seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: A substantial number of people infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain asymptomatic throughout the course of infection. Nearly half of pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are asymptomatic upon diagnosis; these cases are not without risk of maternal morbidity. Here, we investigated the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in an unselected sample of pregnant women in Hong Kong. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included pregnant women who presented for routine Down syndrome screening (DSS) between November
