Evaluation of stray radiofrequency radiation emitted by electrosurgical devices.

Electrosurgery refers to the passage of a high-frequency, high-voltage electrical current through the body to achieve the desired surgical effects. At the same time, these procedures are accompanied by a general increase of the electromagnetic field in an operating room that may expose both patients and personnel to relatively high levels of radiofrequency radiation. In the first part of this study, we have taken into account the radiation emitted by different monopolar electrosurgical devices, evaluating the electromagnetic field strength delivered by an electrosurgical handle and straying fr

Carcinoma-in-situ of the glottic larynx: results of treatment with radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Carcinoma-in-situ (CIS) of the vocal cords frequently progresses to invasive disease if untreated. Treatment approaches include vocal cord stripping, radiation therapy (RT), and laser excision. The purpose of this analysis was to assess the efficacy and safety of a standard RT regimen in the treatment of this condition. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between January 1980 and December 1994, 67 patients (52 men, 15 women; median age, 65 years) with glottic CIS were treated with RT. The standard RT regimen was 51 Gy in 20 fractions given over 4 weeks (99% of patients). Prior to receiving RT, 21

Lifetime persistence and clonality of chromosome aberrations in the peripheral blood of mice acutely exposed to ionizing radiation.

As the measurement of chromosomal translocations increases in popularity for quantifying prior radiation exposure, information on the possible decline of these "stable" aberrations over time is urgently needed. We report here information about the persistence of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in vivo over the life span of a rodent. Female C57BL/6 mice were given a single whole-body acute exposure of 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4 Gy (137)Cs gamma rays at 8 weeks of age. Chromosome aberrations were analyzed from peripheral blood samples at various intervals between 1 day and 21 months after exposure

Benign parotid hypertrophy on +HIV patients: limited late failures after external radiation.

PURPOSE: Although 8-10 Gy of external radiation therapy for +HIV associated parotid hypertrophy has achieved high response rates, the responses were transient with only 1/12 of patients retaining cosmetic control at median follow-up procedures of 9.5 months. Retreatment for failures after 8-10 Gy has also been unsatisfactory. Having shown that 24 Gy of external radiation therapy for benign parotid hypertrophy produced more durable cosmetic control than 8-10 Gy, we now report on longer follow-up periods on a group of patients receiving 24 Gy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty +HIV patients with cl

Early diagnosis of spinal epidural metastases using out-patient computed tomographic myelography.

Twenty patients with known malignancies, back pain, abnormal roentgenograms of the spine, and normal neurological examinations were evaluated by outpatient computed tomographic (CT) myelography to determine the presence and extent of epidural tumor. Spinal CT following the intrathecal administration of low doses of water soluble contrast agents provided high quality diagnostic information. Three patients experienced adverse effects from this procedure which were mild and easily managed in the outpatient setting. Epidural tumor was identified in 15 of 20 (75%) patients. Patients were followed f

The Evolution of Radiation Therapy in Children's Oncology Group Trials, From 1998 to 2025.

PURPOSE: Significant advancements in external beam radiation therapy (RT) over the past 20+ years have occurred with evolution from 2-dimensional techniques based on plain film x rays to 3-dimensional conformal and intensity modulated photon techniques. Likewise, proton radiation therapy (PRT) was also introduced and has become more widely available. Each advance in radiation technique improves targeting and has the potential to mitigate late effects associated with RT. In this study, we use metadata from past and present Children's Oncology Group trials that included RT to describe the evolut

Ultraviolet radiation.

The major source of ultraviolet radiation is solar radiation or sunlight. However, exposure to artificial sources particularly through tanning salons is becoming more important in terms of human health effects, as use of these facilities by young people, has increased. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has noted that there is sufficient evidence from studies in animals and in man to establish ultraviolet radiation as a human carcinogen. Skin cancer has been the most commonly studied cancer site with respect to UV radiation. The nature and timing of sun exposure appear to be impor

Genetic effects of radiotherapy for childhood cancer.

Radiation-induced heritable diseases have not been demonstrated in humans and estimates of genetic risks for protection purposes are based on mouse experiments. The most comprehensive epidemiologic study is of the Japanese atomic bomb survivors and their children, which found little evidence for inherited defects attributable to parental radiation. Studies of workers exposed to occupational radiation or of populations exposed to environmental radiation appear too small and exposures too low to convincingly detect inherited genetic damage. In contrast, survivors of childhood cancer form the lar

Metallothionein induction in human CNS in vitro: neuroprotection from ionizing radiation.

PURPOSE: There have been extensive studies on the regulation of metallothionein (MT) synthesis, and its biological role in liver and kidney. Although there are few reports on brain MT, there is a growing interest in the role of MT in brain. There have been no publications to date on MT synthesis in the human central nervous system (CNS) following exposure to ionizing radiation. In the present study, primary human CNS cultures were used to examine the effect of ionizing radiation on MT mRNA and protein synthesis. In the same cultures, the neuroprotective effects of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd)-in

Repair of DNA double-strand breaks and radiosensitivity to killing in an isogenic group of p53 mutant cell lines.

PURPOSE: Accumulation of the p53 protein can result in G1 arrest that may facilitate DNA repair, or alternatively, it may lead to apoptosis. Mutations that alter p53's ability to mediate these responses are expected to alter cell radiosensitivity to killing. However, the relationship between p53 status and cell radiosensitivity has proven to be complex. Several studies have suggested that p53 mutations are associated with increased radioresistance to killing, while others have shown no such correlation. These differences may be derived from the fact that different mutations of p53 exert differ

A pilot study of intracavitary hyperthermia combined with radiation in the treatment of oesophageal carcinoma.

Twenty-five patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus were treated with intracavitary hyperthermia combined with external beam radiation and intraluminal radiation at Nanjing Jinling Hospital, China. External beam radiation was given with a 6-MV X-ray; 1.8-2.0 Gy per fraction and five fractions per week; this brought the total dose to 60 Gy. Two weeks later, hyperthermia was applied with 915 MHz microwave intracavitary applicators, which were designed at the City of Hope. Temperature measurements were obtained while moving fibreoptic temperature sensors at 1.0 cm interval

Surface-guided Radiation Therapy in Clinical Practice: A Review with Perspectives on Implementation in Resource-constrained Settings.

Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) has emerged as a nonionizing image guidance modality that uses optical surface reconstruction for patient positioning, intra-fraction motion monitoring, and respiratory motion management. Although clinical adoption has expanded in high-income settings over the past decade, the technology remains underutilized in low- and middle-income countries where the global cancer burden is concentrated. This review synthesizes current evidence on SGRT technology, commercial platforms, clinical applications, quality assurance (QA), and workflow considerations, with e

Computational analysis of chemically reactive MHD Ellis hybrid nanofluid flow through a porous medium with thermal radiation and activation energy over a stretching cylinder.

The present work inspects computational analysis of magnetized 2D incompressible flow of hybrid nanofluid (𝐴𝐴7072- 𝐴𝐴7075/H2O) with Darcy-Forchheimer, nonlinear thermal radiation, chemical reaction, and activation energy impacts over a stretching cylinder. The flow problem is presented by nonlinear PDEs of continuity, momentum, energy, and concentration, which are numerically resolved by the implementation of BVP4C procedures by MATLAB software. The simultaneous study of nonlinear thermal radiation with magnetic field, chemical reaction, and activation energy effects, and 2-Dimensional nonline

Navigating the Role of Radiotherapy for Extremity Soft Tissue Sarcomas.

Background/Objectives: The basis for treatment of sarcoma is surgical resection. However, since the introduction of limb salvage surgery, guidelines recommend radiation as a complement to surgery for high-grade sarcomas. The aim of the present narrative review was to provide a comprehensive update about the role of surgery and radiotherapy (RT) for extremity soft tissue sarcoma (ESTS), to increase both surgeons' and oncologists' understanding of radiation as an adjuvant to sarcoma surgery and to illuminate areas of uncertainty that requires further research. Methods: A search on PubMed using r

The KEAP1-NFE2L2/NRF2 Axis in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Radioresistance: Redox Homeostasis and Emerging DNA Damage Response Mechanisms.

Radioresistance and local recurrence remain major barriers to effective radiotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Loss-of-function KEAP1 alterations or activating NFE2L2 alterations can stabilize NRF2, but do not alone establish sustained transcriptional activity or functional dependency. This focused narrative review evaluates clinical radiotherapy studies and mechanistically informative preclinical studies linking the KEAP1-NFE2L2/NRF2 axis to NSCLC radioresistance. We prioritized clinical studies reporting radiotherapy-specific outcomes and preclinical studies coupling NRF2-relate

Late radiation-induced cardiovascular disease after childhood rhabdomyosarcoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced cardiovascular disease may appear decades after cancer therapy and can involve multiple vascular, valvular, myocardial, and conduction structures of the heart. Management is particularly challenging when prior irradiation results in a hostile chest environment and impaired wound healing. CASE SUMMARY: A 31-year-old woman with a history of childhood right forearm rhabdomyosarcoma treated with resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy presented with recurrent syncope. Computed tomography angiography revealed asymmetric growth of the right-sided arteries, leading to

Optimizing lens and organ dose evaluation in head CT examinations using monte carlo simulation: influence of gantry tilt and scan range.

To minimize radiation exposure to the eye lens during head computed tomography examinations, we performed a high-precision Monte Carlo simulation using the particle and heavy ion transport code system to investigate the effects of gantry tilt angle and scan range on the dose to the lens and other radiosensitive organs. Utilizing a source model with a 2 mm beam width, we visualized the sharp dose peak and the subsequent gradually attenuating tail in the dose distribution to the lens, quantitatively demonstrating that even minor adjustments in the tilt angle or slice position can markedly impact
