We report on a 73-year-old man with a toxic multinodular goitre, which was treated with radioiodine therapy (I-131) without pretreatment with an antithyroid drug. Four weeks later he presented with rapidly progressive dyspnoea and a significant increase in free thyroxin. The electrocardiogram showed ST -segment elevation, and echocardiography demonstrated apical akinesia and a left ventricular ejection fraction of only 25%. BACKGROUND: Chronic esophageal toxicity after radiotherapy alone for cancer of the head and neck (HNCa) is rare: 2.6% for strictures and 0.8% for stenosis after a 60-Gy dose. BACKGROUND: Invasive cancers of the vagina and vulva are treated with radiation-based therapy when proximity of the bladder and/or rectum precludes conservative surgical resection. Patient factors affect non-malignant tissue tolerance to radiation exposure.

PURPOSE: To study the injury to and possible recovery of the visual function and foveal morphology in patients with photo-induced foveal injury due to watching the solar eclipse of August 11th, 1999 in Stockholm, Sweden.
METHODS: Fifteen patients, all of whom viewed the solar eclipse, were followed for 1 year, during which their visual symptoms were recorded and visual acuity (VA) was tested, and ophthalmoscopy and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy were performed.
RESULTS: Photo-induced foveal injury gave rise to subjective visual disturbances, reduced VA and morphological changes in the fovea.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the clinical presentation, evaluation, management, and outcome of patients experiencing sigmoid perforation following radiation therapy for cervical cancer.
METHODS: A database consisting of over 5000 patients with stage IB-IIIB cervix cancer treated between 1963 and 1992 revealed 35 patients with sigmoid perforation. Twenty-seven were diagnosed and managed at one institution, and they form the study group.

PURPOSE: To present our experience with carotid artery stenting as an alternative treatment to endarterectomy in patients with radiation-induced carotid artery occlusive disease.

Radiation proctitis is a common complication of radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. In the chronic form it might lead to intractable or massive hemorrhage unresponsive to conventional therapy. In these cases surgery is associated with a high morbidity. Seven female patients previously treated with external beam radiation for carcinoma of the uterus and cervix were included. We report a case of multiple parietal cavernous malformations in a thirteen year old female who received cranial irradiation following incomplete resection of a choroid plexus papilloma. The cavernous malformations, which developed within the prior parietal radiation ports, were diagnosed nine years after the patients' radiation treatment when the patient presented with increasing frequency of seizures.
