Intracranial clear cell meningioma: a clinicopathologic study of 15 cases.

OBJECT: Clear cell meningioma (CCM) is a rare histological variant of meningioma. CCM has a high recurrence rate and aggressiveness. In this study, we reviewed our experience in the treatment of the lesion. METHODS: Here we present a series of 15 patients with intracranial CCM. The clinical data were retrieved from the records of our Neurosurgery Department and the patients' prognoses were attained by clinic service and telephone. Immunohistochemistry for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), vimentin, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), CD10, and S-100 was done, and the MIB-1 labeling index

Endoscopic transsphenoidal, transclival resection of an enterogenous cyst located ventral to the brainstem: case report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Enterogenous cysts are rare tumors found most commonly in the spine, but they have also been reported intracranially. Cases of enterogenous cysts located within the posterior fossa have traditionally been resected via difficult craniotomies that require prolonged retraction and risk injury to cranial nerves. We describe a method for resection of an enterogenous cyst located anterior to the brainstem via the endoscopic transsphenoidal approach. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old man was found to have a 2-cm mass anterior to the brainstem during routine screening af

Cervical vertebrae, cranial base, and mandibular retrognathia in human triploid fetuses.

On profile radiographs of adults, an association between fusions of cervical vertebrae, deviations in the cranial base and mandibular retrognathia has been documented radiographically. An elaboration of this association on a histological level is needed. In human triploid fetuses severe mandibular retrognathia and deviations in the cranial base have previously been described radiographically (without cephalometry) and cervical column fusions radiographically as well as histologically. Therefore, triploid fetuses were chosen to elucidate the cranial base cephalomterically and histologically. In

Endoscopic endonasal resection of anterior cranial base meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: The endonasal route may be feasible for the resection of anterior cranial base tumors that abut the paranasal sinuses. There are several case reports and mixed case series discussing this approach. Other than pituitary adenomas, there is a lack of literature describing the outcomes of endonasal approaches for single-tumor types such as meningiomas. METHODS: In this study, we describe our current endoscopic endonasal technique and demonstrate the feasibility of using it to access anterior cranial base meningiomas from the back wall of the frontal sinus to the sella and laterally to

A congenital teratoma with a cleft palate: report of a case.

Teratomas are benign tumors containing cells from ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal layers. They occur in about 1 in every 4000 births and most commonly in the sacrococcygeal region, followed by the ovaries. Congenital epignathus teratomas are rare embryological neoplasms localised in the region of head and neck. An epignathus is found in approximately 1:35,000 to 1:200,000 live births. This accounts for 2-9% of all teratomas. Size and location of the neoplasm in the oronasopharynx is variable. Teratomas are partly undiagnosed at the time of birth. They may exist with an intracranial exten

Massive aneurysmal bone cyst of the anterior cranial fossa floor--case report.

A 19-year-old male patient presented with a midline facial, nose, and forehead hard and bony swelling associated with hypertelorism. Neuroimaging revealed a massive tumor involving the anterior cranial fossa floor, which had occupied and enlarged all paranasal air sinuses, and displaced the orbits outwards and the frontal lobes of the brain superiorly. A basal transcranial route was used for radical resection of the massive and vascular tumor. Histological examination confirmed an aneurysmal bone cyst. Such tumors only rarely involve the cranial bones or paranasal air sinuses.

Transnasal endoscopic excision of midline nasal dermoid from the anterior cranial base.

We recommend that every patient with a midline nasal dermoid be evaluated preoperatively by fine-cut CT scan, in the axial and coronal planes, using both bone and soft-tissue algorithms. Because of CT limitations for assessing soft tissue at the cranial base, a complementary thin-section, high-resolution, multiplanar MRI scan should be considered. Transnasal endoscopic excision of midline nasal dermoid should be used if the dermoid is located within the nasal cavity, and there is minimal or no cutaneous involvement. This approach can be combined with a short vertical midline lenticular excisio

Occlusal plane position was analysed cephalometrically in 35 Klinefelter adults (47,XXY) and compared with 60 eugnath control males (46,XY). The significantly smaller angles between the occlusal plane and the cranial base (NSL-OLs) and between the occlusal plane and the Frankfort horizontal plane (Fr-OLs) were obtained in 47,XXY males (P < 0.01), while the angles between the maxillary base and the occlusal plane (NL-OLs) and between the Camper's line and the occlusal plane (Camp.-OLs) were not significantly different (P > 0.05) from the control group. Early Detection of Neuroblastoma Recurrence on 18 F m FBG PET.

A patient with neuroblastoma was assessed to be in remission based on clinical and standard-of-care imaging assessments, including a negative I-123 m IBG scan. Patient underwent 18 F m FBG PET/CT imaging on the same day as I-123 m IBG scan as part of a clinical trial (NCT: 04724369), which showed abnormal focal uptake suspicious for lesion in the skull. Patient underwent surveillance and follow-up with standard imaging. I-123 m IBG SPECT/CT at 3 months showed no abnormalities in the skull, but repeat examination at 6 months showed positive uptake corresponding to 18 F m FBG. Recurrent neurobla

Decision-Making in Adult Cranial Vault Reconstruction.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Define and classify different types of cranial defects 2. Compare both autologous and alloplastic options for reconstruction 3. Develop an optimal approach for cranial vault reconstruction in various clinical scenarios. SUMMARY: Defects of the cranium result from various causes, including traumatic loss, neurosurgical intervention, skull tumors, and infection. Cranial vault reconstruction aims to restore both the structural integrity and surface morphology of the skull. To ensure a successful outcome, the

Automatic repositioning of jaw segments for three-dimensional virtual treatment planning of orthognathic surgery.

PURPOSE: To develop a computer-based method for automating the repositioning of jaw segments in the skull during three-dimensional virtual treatment planning of orthognathic surgery. The method speeds up the planning phase of the orthognathic procedure, releasing surgeons from laborious and time-consuming tasks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The method finds the optimal positions for the maxilla, mandibular body, and bony chin in the skull. Minimization of cephalometric differences between measured and standard values is considered. Cone-beam computed tomographic images acquired from four preoperati

Diagnosis of skull fractures according to postmortem interval: an experimental approach in a porcine model.

Most studies on fracture morphology of fresh or dry bones, specifically skull bones, have a limited focus, and they are often based on observations rather than experimental tests. This study characterized pig cranial fractures sustained under known impact conditions. An impact machine (mobile carriage guided by columns) was used to perform a fracture on each skull. Impacts were performed at the same energy level on fresh and dry bones, with two types of impactor: a sharp striker (n = 50) and a blunt striker (n = 50). We found distinct features under different conditions, including osseous flak

Machinery-related deaths: relevance of workplace investigation and antemortem radiological data in reconstructing the fatality.

Machinery-related fatalities are one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational deaths. In our report, we present the case of a 40-year-old male who suffered a severe head trauma while working in a cut-foam industry and died despite an early craniectomy. The radiological reconstruction of the skull based on preoperative computed tomography scans disclosed a large depressed conical fracture of the left parietal bone. The 3D-reconstruction of the work area, combined with a fit-matching analysis between the machinery and the depressed skull fracture allowed us to conclude that the head was c…

Anthropometric Analysis of the Human Skull for Developmental Left-Sided Asymmetry, New Finding.

BACKGROUND: Facial and cranial asymmetry is common in bilateral vertebrates, particularly human beings. Through years of injecting fillers and performing face-lift operation on patients, we began to observe that more fillers were required on the right side to reach symmetry and also more loose skin and soft tissue was observed on the right side in the majority of patients (Fig. 5). Here, we conducted an analytical study to comprehensively measure human skulls in order to observe and quantify this difference. METHODS: We collected forty-one natural skulls available from five medical schools of

Laser-Doppler examination of the blood supply in pericranial flaps.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to determine if there is evidence suggestive of blood flow within pericranial flaps. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An index of blood flow using laser-Doppler blood flowmetry was obtained in pericranial flaps from 10 patients who were undergoing a coronal flap for reconstructive procedures. The data were analyzed using fast Fourier transformation to indicate the presence or absence of blood flow. RESULTS: All but 1 pericranial flap showed evidence of blood flow within. Most flaps had blood flow even several centimeters distal to the origin of the flaps'
