OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep quality's risk factors remain understudied in aging populations. Chronic back problems (CBP), a leading cause of disability, may contribute to poor sleep quality. Firstly, we determined the prevalence of poor sleep quality. Secondly, we investigated the association between chronic back problems and poor sleep quality, controlling for covariates. Lastly, we explored the interaction between sleep apnea and chronic back problems with respect to their association with poor sleep quality.
METHODS: We analyzed data from Ontarians ≥ 60 years in the 2015-2016 Canadian Community

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are prevalent in Alzheimer's disease (AD), probably emerging during its preclinical stage. Poor subjective sleep quality is linked to reduced brain volume and cortical thickness (CTh), but associations with objective sleep measures, particularly regarding sex and AD pathology, remain unclear.
METHODS: We characterized 171 cognitively unimpaired adults from the ALzheimer and FAmilies (ALFA) Sleep study using actigraphy, MRI, amyloid beta 42/40, and phosphorylated tau at threonine 181 in cerebrospinal fluid.
RESULTS: Lower sleep efficiency, higher wake after sl

The COVID-19 pandemic has markedly influenced people's lifestyle and sexual behaviors, including masturbation patterns. This study delved into how masturbation frequency could impact anxiety levels, sleep quality, and somatic symptoms post-masturbation among Chinese adults during this period. From December 2022 to January 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional survey, gathering data via WenJuanXing, a leading online survey platform in China. This platform facilitated the recruitment of a diverse cohort, spanning various age groups and geographical locations. Masturbation frequency among particip

BACKGROUND: Previously, we demonstrated that childhood maltreatment could worsen depressive symptoms through neuroticism. On the one hand, some studies report that sleep disturbances are related to childhood maltreatment and neuroticism and worsens depressive symptoms. But, to our knowledge, no reports to date have shown the interrelatedness between childhood maltreatment, neuroticism, and depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbance in the one model. We hypothesized that sleep disturbance enhances the influence of maltreatment victimization in childhood or neuroticism on adulthood depressive sy

Poor sleep and chronic illnesses have a bidirectional relationship where presence of one can worsen the other. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with significant morbidity and early mortality. In this study, we examine sleep quality, its predictors, and its association with quality of life in Jamaican adults with SCD. This cross-sectional study evaluated 177 well adult SCD patients for sleep quality using The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and quality of life using the Adult Sickle Cell Quality of Life Measurement Information System (ASCQ-Me). BACKGROUND: Observational studies have reported maternal short/long sleep duration to be associated with adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether there are nonlinear causal effects. Our aim was to use Mendelian randomization (MR) and multivariable regression to examine nonlinear effects of sleep duration on stillbirth (MR only), miscarriage (MR only), gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, perinatal depression, preterm birth and low/high offspring birthweight.
METHODS: We used data from European women in UK Biobank (N=176,897), FinnGen

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in heart rate during sleep linked to impaired neuro-cardiac modulation may provide new information about physiological sleep signatures of depression. This study assessed the validity of an algorithm using patterns of heart rate changes during sleep to discriminate between individuals with depression and healthy controls.
METHODS: A heart rate profiling algorithm was modeled using machine-learning based on 1203 polysomnograms from individuals with depression referred to a sleep clinic for the assessment of sleep abnormalities, including insomnia, excessive daytime fa

BACKGROUND: Earlier studies have suggested that patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) report worse sleep quality than population norms. What remains unknown is whether these patients are actually experiencing measurable changes in objective sleep parameters. The goal of this study was to prospectively evaluate objective sleep measures in a cohort of patients with CRS.
METHODS: A prospective, multi-institutional, case-control study was designed to compare patients with CRS to nondiseased controls. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth S

BACKGROUND: Inadequate sleep duration, sleep patterns, and sleep quality have been associated with metabolic, circadian, and behavioral changes that promote obesity. Adolescence is a period during which sleep habits change to include less sleep, later bedtimes, and greater bedtime shift (e.g., difference between weekend and weekday bedtime). Thus, sleep may play a role in adolescent obesity and weight-related behaviors. This study assesses sleep duration, quality, and schedules and their relationships to relative weight and body fat percentage as well as diet, physical activity, and screen tim

UNLABELLED: Approximately 20% of children develop persistent pain after major surgery. Sleep disruption has been implicated as a predictor of children's acute postsurgical pain. However, perioperative sleep patterns have not been longitudinally assessed, and the role of sleep in persistence of postsurgical pain has not been explored. We aimed to examine sleep patterns over 4 months in children having major surgery, and temporal relationships between daily sleep and pain. Sixty children age 10 to 18 (mean = 14.7) years having major surgery completed 7 days of actigraphy sleep monitoring (sleep
