Ultraviolet Excitation Dynamics of Nitrobenzenes.

Time-resolved photoelectron imaging was used to investigate nonadiabatic processes operating in the excited electronic states of nitrobenzene and three methyl-substituted derivatives: 3,5-, 2,6-, and 2,4-dimethylnitrobenzene. The primary goal was evaluating the dynamical impact of the torsional angle between the NO2 group and the benzene ring plane-something previously implicated in mediating the propensity for branching into different photodissociation pathways (NO vs NO2 elimination). Targeted, photoinitiated release of NO radicals is of interest for clinical medicine applications, and there

Spider Origami: Folding Principle of Jumping Spider Leg Joints for Bioinspired Fluidic Actuators.

Jumping spiders (Phidippus regius) are known for their ability to traverse various terrains and have targeted jumps within the fraction of a second to catch flying preys. Different from humans and insects, spiders use muscles to flex their legs, and hydraulic actuation for extension. By pressurizing their inner body fluid, they can achieve fast leg extensions for running and jumping. Here, the working principle of the articular membrane covering the spider leg joint pit is investigated. This membrane is highly involved in walking, grasping, and jumping motions. Hardness and stiffness of the ar

Repetitive Control for Multi-Joint Arm Movements Based on Virtual Trajectories.

According to the neuromuscular model of virtual trajectory control, the postures and movements of limbs are performed by shifting the equilibrium positions determined by agonist and antagonist muscle activities. In this study, we develop virtual trajectory control for the reaching movements of a multi-joint arm, introducing a proportional-derivative feedback control scheme. In virtual trajectory control, it is crucial to design a suitable virtual trajectory such that the desired trajectory can be realized. To this end, we propose an algorithm for updating virtual trajectories in repetitive con

Assessment of MR imaging during one-lung flooding in a large animal model.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lung remains challenging due to the low tissue density, susceptibility artefacts, unfavourable relaxation times and motion. Previously, we demonstrated in vivo that one-lung flooding (OLF) with saline is a viable and safe approach. This study investigates the feasibility of OLF in an MRI environment and evaluates the flooding process on MR images. METHODS: OLF of the left lung was performed on five animals using a porcine model. Before, during and after OLF, standard T2w and T1w spin-echo (SE) and gradient-echo (GRE) sequences were applied at

Design and Testing of a Single-Element Ultrasound Viscoelastography System for Point-of-Care Edema Quantification.

Management of fluid overload in patients with end-stage renal disease represents a unique challenge to clinical practice because of the lack of accurate and objective measurement methods. Currently, peripheral edema is subjectively assessed by palpation of the patient's extremities, ostensibly a qualitative indication of tissue viscoelastic properties. New robust quantitative estimates of tissue fluid content would allow clinicians to better guide treatment, minimizing reactive treatment decision making. Ultrasound viscoelastography (UVE) can be used to estimate strain in viscoelastic tissue,

Dynamics of Klebsiella pneumoniae OmpA transmembrane domain: the four extracellular loops display restricted motion behavior in micelles and in lipid bilayers.

The transmembrane domain of Klebsiella pneumoniae OmpA (KpOmpA) possesses four long extracellular loops that exhibit substantial sequence variability throughout OmpA homologs in Enterobacteria, in comparison with the highly conserved membrane-embedded β-barrel core. These loops are responsible for the immunological properties of the protein, including cellular and humoral recognition. In addition to key features revealed by structural elucidation of the KpOmpA transmembrane domain in detergent micelles, studies of protein dynamics provide insight into its function and/or mechanism of action. Compound microstructures and wax layer of beetle elytral surfaces and their influence on wetting properties.

A beetles' first line of defense against environmental hazards is their mesothoracic elytra--rigid, protective forewings. In order to study the interaction of these wings with water, the surface microstructures of various beetles' elytra were observed by Environment Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Chemistry components were ascertained using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All the beetles of various habitats (including desert, plant, dung, land and water) exhibited compound microstructures on their elytra. The wetting properties of these elytra wer

Adrenomedullin regulates sperm motility and oviductal ciliary beat via cyclic adenosine 5'-monophosphate/protein kinase A and nitric oxide.

Cilium and flagellum beating are important in reproduction and defects in their motion are associated with ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Adrenomedullin (ADM) is a polypeptide present in the reproductive system. This report demonstrates a novel action of ADM in enhancing the flagellar/ciliary beating of human spermatozoa and rat oviductal ciliated cells. At the concentration found in the seminal plasma, it increases the progressive motility of spermatozoa. ADM binds to its classical receptor, calcitonin receptor-like receptor/receptor activity-modifying protein complex on spermatozoa. ADM

Stability of total hip arthroplasty in patients 75 years or older.

Increasing patient age (> 75 years) is a known risk factor for dislocation of total hip arthroplasty. This is a study of total hip arthroplasties by one surgeon in patients 75 years or older to determine the prevalence of dislocation and a review of the surgical options for prevention and treatment of instability in this population. Of 140 primary total hip arthroplasties done in patients 75 years or older who were followed up for at least 1 year, the preoperative diagnosis was osteoarthritis in 82% and the mean followup time was 4 years. The acetabular component was cementless: modular in 121

Posterior cruciate-sacrificing versus posterior cruciate-substituting total knee arthroplasty: a study of clinical and functional outcomes in matched patients.

Since the introduction of the Total Condylar Prosthesis (TCP) in 1974, concomitant improvements in surgical technique and prosthetic design have occurred. The individual effects of each of these variables have not been investigated, however. This study evaluates 2 different knee designs using the same operative technique by a single surgeon. All primary total knee arthroplasties performed between 1986 and 1989 were entered into a database of 2 cohorts, TCP and Press Fit Condylar (PFC) knees, matched for age, gender, body weight, and diagnosis. Follow-up data within 12 months of each other were

Papillary muscle traction in mitral valve prolapse: quantitation by two-dimensional echocardiography.

Previous angiographic observations in patients with mitral valve prolapse have suggested that superior leaflet displacement results in abnormal superior tension on the papillary muscle tips that causes their superior traction or displacement. It has further been postulated that such tension can potentially affect the mechanical and electrophysiologic function of the left ventricle. The purpose of this study was to confirm and quantitate this phenomenon noninvasively by using two-dimensional echocardiography to determine whether superior displacement of the papillary muscle tips occurs and its

Differentiation between hemangiomas and metastases of the liver with ultrafast MR imaging: preliminary results with T2 calculations.

We studied the efficacy of T2 measurements at high field strength in distinguishing between liver hemangiomas and hepatic metastases when an ultrafast (single-excitation) MR imaging technique is used. Fourteen patients with known liver tumors were imaged in a 2.0-T prototype ultrafast MR scanner with a spin-echo (infinite TR and TE of 30-340 msec) pulse sequence. Each image was obtained with a total data acquisition time of 20 msec. T2 calculations for hepatic metastases (n = 6) showed a mean of 79.3 +/- 13.5 msec, whereas hemangiomas (n = 8) showed a T2 of 139.8 +/- 18.8 msec (p less than .00
