An ulcer was induced in the anterior wall of the antrum of cats by local injection of acetic acid solution. Carbonized microspheres, 15 +/- 5 microns in diameter, labelled with 141Ce, were used to measure blood flow in different regions and layers of the stomach wall. The radioactivity of a blod reference sample and of tissue samples was determined, and the blood flow was calculated for each tissue sample. Sixty patients with gastric ulcers were treated for four weeks with either 1 g cimetidine per day or with identical tablets containing lactose. The healing rate, assessed by endoscopy, was 23 out of 35 (66%) in the patients given cimetidine and 13 out of 25 (52%) in those given placebo. The difference between the groups is not significant. During each of the four weeks of the study the cimetidine group experienced significantly fewer attacks of pain and consumed less antacids than the placebo treated patients.

In normal, duodenal ulcer, and gastric ulcer subjects the two main forms of gastrin, G17 and G34, were estimated by radioimmunoassay in fasting serum and after feeding. Two antisera were used: one showing high specificity for G17, the other specific for the common COOH-terminus of G17 and G34 and so allowing estimation of G34 by difference. The effectiveness of pirenzepine in the treatment of duodenal ulcer was assessed in a double-blind clinical trial in comparison with placebo. Twenty-nine of 30 patients satisfactorily completed the trial. There was endoscopic ulcer healing in 4 of 14 pirenzepine treated patients (29%) after 2 weeks of treatment and in 11 of 14 (79%) after 6 weeks. There was no healing in 15 patients treated with placebo after 2 weeks and there were two ulcers healed after 6 weeks. A surgical technic for cardial or juxtacardial ulcers is presented. The surgical principle consists of resection of the distal stomach including the ulcer in a way that the esophageal mucosa remains intact. Reconstruction of the transit is accomplished by a Roux-en-Y esophagogastrojejunostomy in one layer. A newborn infant was transferred to our hospital because of gastro-intestinal hemorrhage, starting a few hours after birth. Because of fetal distress a cesarean section had been necessary. The clinical examination as well as the results of the laboratory tests revealed nothing abnormal. In an upper gastro-intestinal X-ray series there was evidence for a duodenal ulcer. This case-control study of Hawaiian Japanese indicated that gastric ulcer in the proximal portion of the pyloric antrum has features similar to those of gastric cancer. Such ulcers occurred at sites most frequently and most severely affected by intestinal metaplasia, although metaplasia tended to be more extensive with cancer than with ulcer. A surgical therapy model for dermohypodermic sclerosis and varicose ulcer of the lower extremities is presented. This consists of extending the method described by Martorell in 1955 to cases of inveterate ulcer. The pre-, intra- and post-operative colour diagrams and figures presented show the validity of the method without superseding lengthier and more complex methods.
