A rat model of cerebral small vascular disease induced by ultrasound and protoporphyrin.

Cerebral small vascular disease (CSVD) has a high incidence worldwide, but its pathological mechanisms remain poorly understood due to the lack of proper animal models. The current animal models of CSVD have several limitations such as high mortality rates and large-sized lesions, and thus it is urgent to develop new animal models of CSVD. Ultrasound can activate protoporphyrin to produce reactive oxygen species in a liquid environment. Here we delivered protoporphyrin into cerebral small vessels of rat brain through polystyrene microspheres with a diameter of 15 μm, and then performed transcr

Ultrasound therapy for a week promotes regeneration and reduces pro-inflammatory macrophages in a rat sciatic nerve autograft model.

Peripheral nerve injury causes long-term motor dysfunction. Ultrasound (US) therapy is expected to accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration. However, its optimal usage and effects on macrophage phenotypes during peripheral nerve regeneration remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the optimal duration of US therapy and its effects on macrophage phenotype. Twenty-seven rats with autologous sciatic nerve grafting were divided into three groups: two received US therapy (1 MHz frequency, intensity of 140 mW/cm2, 20% duty cycle, 5 min/day) for one (US1) or 4 weeks (US4), and one group receiv

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound enhances bone marrow-derived stem cells-based periodontal regenerative therapies.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone loss is one of the most common consequence for periodontitis, which is a major obstacle in periodontal regeneration. Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) have shown significant promise in the treatment of various disease, which also contribute to the natural bone repair process. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a therapeutic ultrasound used in our previous studies to promotes alveolar bone regeneration. In addition, LIPUS was found to be a promising method to enhance mesenchymal stromal cell-based therapies. In the current study, we have investigated the effect

[Development of Ultrasound Theranostics for Cancer].

Theranostics is a term used to describe the combination of diagnostic and therapeutic functions in a single agent. Ultrasound, for example, is a good tool for theranostics due to its multi-potency as both a diagnostic tool using sonography, and as a therapeutic, i.e., by high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Likewise, microbubbles and nanobubbles are not only used as contrast imaging agents, but also as enhancers of drug delivery. Recently, the combination of these bubbles with low intensity ultrasound has been utilized as an effective drug delivery system. We have implemented a similar te

The burden of prostatic calculi is more important than the presence.

Prostatic calculi are a common finding on transrectal prostate ultrasound. However, it remains unclear whether they are significantly associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Our objective was to evaluate the association between prostatic calculi and LUTS with a focus on "calculi burden" because no studies have investigated prostatic calculi using "calculi burden" as an indicator. A total of 606 participants who received transrectal prostate ultrasound were divided into two groups according to the presence of prostatic calculi. "Calculi burden" was defined as the sum of the transve

Selective ultrasound-enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis of oleuropein to its aglycon in olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf extracts.

Hydrolysis of oleuropein, the main phenol in olive (Olea europaea L.) leaf extracts, to oleuropein aglycon and other subsequent products in the hydrolytic pathway can be catalyzed by different enzymes. Three of the most used hydrolases were assayed to catalyze the process, and β-glucosidase from Aspergillus niger was selected. Acceleration of the enzymatic hydrolysis by ultrasound (US) was studied using a Box-Behnken design (duty cycle, amplitude, cycle time) and an oleuropein standard, and the optimum US conditions for achieving maximum yield of oleuropein aglycon were 0.5s/s duty cycle, 50%

Analysis of phytohormones in vermicompost using a novel combinative sample preparation strategy of ultrasound-assisted extraction and solid-phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Vermicompost (VC), a widely used premium organic fertilizer, is the by-product of symbiotic interactions between earthworms and microorganisms living within them. It has been postulated that phytohormones are plausible "magic compounds" in VC that are responsible for making them such good fertilizers. Thus, a novel approach involving ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed as a fast and efficient sample preparation method to screen for different classes of phytohormones in VC by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) analysis. Enhanced gene expression of systemically administered plasmid DNA in the liver with therapeutic ultrasound and microbubbles.

Ultrasound-mediated delivery (USMD) of novel therapeutic agents in the presence of microbubbles is a potentially safe and effective method for gene therapy offering many desired characteristics, such as low toxicity, potential for repeated treatment, and organ specificity. In this study, we tested the capability of USMD to improve gene expression in mice livers using glycogen storage disease Type Ia as a model disease under systemic administration of naked plasmid DNA. Image-guided therapeutic ultrasound was used in two studies to provide therapeutic ultrasound to mice livers. In the first stu

Integrated ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging for simultaneous temperature and cavitation monitoring during focused ultrasound therapies.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound can be used to noninvasively produce different bioeffects via viscous heating, acoustic cavitation, or their combination, and these effects can be exploited to develop a wide range of therapies for cancer and other disorders. In order to accurately localize and control these different effects, imaging methods are desired that can map both temperature changes and cavitation activity. To address these needs, the authors integrated an ultrasound imaging array into an MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) system to simultaneously visualize thermal and mechanical effects via pa

Conservative management of ulnar tunnel syndrome: secondary to excessive healing tissue; a rare complication after flexor tendon injury--a case report.

The ulnar tunnel syndrome occurs usually from ganglions, lipoma, cysts, chronic repetitive trauma, bicycling, and the activities that require either prolonged wrist hyper extension or continued pressure on the hypothenar eminence. The ulnar tunnel syndrome after flexor tendon repair is a rare complication. We report on a 24-year-old man with ulnar tunnel syndrome after a flexor tendon repair secondary to girder cut injury. The patient was managed conservatively for his hypertrophic scar for 9 weeks. After 9 weeks, the patient presented with no clawing and complete closure of the hand.
