An association has been noted between trisomy 18 and genitourinary abnormalities, with six previous reports of the prune-belly syndrome occurring in patients with trisomy 18. We have observed a 120-g fetus of 18 weeks' gestational age at autopsy in whom there was severe prune-belly syndrome and trisomy 18. During 1983, 823 first trimester therapeutic abortions were performed at the University Hospital of Trondheim, Norway. Of these patients, 229 had an IUD inserted at the end of the operative procedure. The remaining 594 patients served as controls. Microbiological samples were taken from the cervix and the urethra. Thirty-one women with the recurrent urethral syndrome (abacterial cystitis) had extensive microbiological, cytological and histological investigations. Among 906 thalidomide exposed young from 6 different rabbit strains, 141 major malformations involving the alimentary tract were found. OBJECTIVES: Focal therapy with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an emerging option for the treatment of prostate cancer and often followed up by MRI. Image assessment of treatment failure, however, requires proper knowledge about typical procedure-related changes in prostate MRI, which is sparse, in particular for unilateral HIFU treatment and late follow up (beyond 6 months).
