PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether bladder neck size is associated with incontinence scores after robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive eligible patients undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy between July 19 and December 28, 2016 were enrolled in a prospective, longitudinal, observational cohort study. The primary outcome was patient reported urinary incontinence on the EPIC (Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite) scale 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively. The relationship between the EPIC score of urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence, or the loss of bladder control, is a debilitating condition affecting millions worldwide, which significantly reduces quality of life. Neuromodulation of lower urinary tract nerves can be used to treat sensations of urgency in many subjects, including those with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). Event driven, or conditional stimulation has been investigated as a possible improvement to the state-of-the-art open-loop stimulation systems available today. However, this requires a robust, adaptive, and noise-tolerant method of classifying bladder function from real-time bladder press

Urodynamic tests are the standard diagnostic method for lower urinary tract dysfunctions (LUTD). However, these tests are invasive. The current review describes the noninvasive imaging techniques that have been used to monitor LUTD. The main imaging technologies that have been applied in diagnosing LUTD were 2D ultrasonography, Doppler ultrasonography, and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Ultrasonographic parameters, such as bladder wall thickness (BWT), detrusor wall thickness (DWT), and ultrasound-estimated bladder weight (UEBW), have been proposed as surrogates for bladder outlet obstruct

OBJECTIVE: Overactive bladder may have a neurogenic or non neurogenic origin. Sometimes, as a result of detrusor overactivity, disorders of the upper urinary tract function may appear. One of these alterations may be the appearance of associated vesicoureteral reflux. The treatment of overactive bladder may be done with anticholinergic drugs and if there is not response the use of botulin toxin type A is approved. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate the effect of botulin toxin type A in the treatment of overactive bladder and vesicoureteral reflux secondary to the overactive bladder.

OBJECTIVES: Despite its high prevalence and its important impact on patient's life, overactive bladder is a disorder poorly known and not usually tackled in daily clinical practice. The aim of this study is to know the main procedures and techniques used by both urologists and general practitioners to diagnose overactive bladder in usual clinical practice in Spain.
METHODS: A standardized questionnaire was administered to 748 physicians specialized in urology and to 696 primary core physicians or general practitioners. The questionnaire collected information about the management of patients w

Nephrogenic adenoma (NA) is a rare benign tumour of the urinary tract and is found most commonly in the bladder. Here are presented four cases of paediatric NA, two bladder and two urethral. Their diagnostic and management features in the context of differential diagnosis and natural history are discussed. A 3-year-old girl presented with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) and haematuria. She had undergone a previous hemi-nephro-ureterectomy. An ultrasound scan suggested a large bladder tumour, which was biopsied cystoscopically, and histology confirmed an NA. She then underwent open re

PURPOSE: The surgical correction of bladder exstrophy to achieve continence with voiding remains a challenging problem for the urologist. Since 1989 we have performed complete primary repair for exstrophy based on the concept that the primary defect of bladder and cloacal exstrophy is anterior herniation. Thus, the bladder and urethra must be treated as a single unit to move them posteriorly into the pelvis. We present this technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1989 to 1997, 18 patients with bladder exstrophy and 6 with cloacal exstrophy underwent complete primary repair of exstrophy. This p

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome is a clinical manifestation of systemic organ involvement by Toxocara species. VLM with involvement of the bladder and liver is a rare finding. A 62-year-old woman presented with diffuse bladder wall thickening and multiple liver masses with peripheral eosinophilia and urinary symptoms. We considered malignancy or eosinophilic cystitis through clinical manifestations and imaging findings. However, no suspicious malignant lesions were observed on cystoscopy and liver mass biopsy revealed the presence of eosinophilic necrotizing granuloma without malignant c

A comprehensive evaluation of incontinence using office-based techniques may discover reversible problems such as delirium, urinary infections, vaginitis, depression, drug effects, endocrinologic causes, immobility, or impaction. Treatment of these causes may alleviate incontinence. Bedside urodynamics are a sensitive, specific, and useful office-based technique that can identify detrusor instability, overflow incontinence, or stress incontinence. Low urinary flow rate, difficulty with catheterization, slow bladder filling or severe urgency, bladder capacity over 600 ml, and post-void residual

Bladder diverticula are usually encountered in the male. Their occurrence in women is scarcely appreciated. The association of bladder diverticula with urinary tract infection, dysuria, urgency and incontinence is reported in a series of 11 elderly female patients. The etiology of this finding is discussed based on urodynamic evaluation of these patients.

Five patients wíth normál pressure hydrocephalus who had urinary incontinence were found to have neurogenic bladders by cystometry. The bladder disturbance in this disorder whould be considered the result of a specific defect of brain function and not just and artifact of gait disturbance or of dementia.

Functional urinary incontinence in children may be caused by disturbances of the filling phase, the voiding phase or a combination of both. Detrusor overactivity may cause frequency and urgency, with or without urge incontinence. Girls present with symptoms of detrusor overactivity more often than boys, but sometimes other symptoms, e.g. urinary tract infections or constipation, prevail. Frequent contractions of the detrusor may cause the pelvic floor muscles to become overactive, resulting in staccato or fractionated voiding. When incontinence is the result of a voiding disorder the term 'dys

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Minimally invasive approaches to manage bladder diverticula have become increasingly popular; however, intracorporeal identification of bladder diverticula may be challenging. We report a novel technique for diverticular illumination using flexible cystoscopy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: After management of bladder neck obstruction, two patients with bladder diverticula and persistent lower urinary tract symptoms underwent robot-assisted bladder diverticulectomy. Cystoscopic illumination was used in both cases to aid diverticular identification and dissection.
RESULTS: Our

UNLABELLED: WHAT'S KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT? AND WHAT DOES THE STUDY ADD?: Continent urinary diversion with bladder augmentation is an established method of providing urinary continence in children with bladder exstrophy, who are not suitable candidates or have a failed bladder neck reconstruction. Sub-mucosal implantation of the tubularized catheterizable stoma (usually the appendix) into the reservoir, with backing typically provided by either the bladder musculature or colonic taenia, is safe and highly effective in these children. In some cases of classic bladder exstrophy and in the majority

Cystitis glandularis is a rare benign condition, occurring in only 1% of the general population, and it tends to affect males more frequently. This pathology is characterized by reactive metaplasia of the bladder's urothelium, which results from chronic and recurrent irritation of the bladder wall. Symptoms are nonspecific and primarily marked by an irritative urinary syndrome accompanied by hematuria. We present a case of a young male patient with cystitis glandularis, discovered as a result of bilateral uretero-hydronephrosis detected during an ultrasound examination subsequent to an irritat

The following case report describes a case of prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma in a 6-month-old male who presented with urinary retention and constipation. MRI showed a prostatic mass that was displacing the rectum and bladder, leading to bladder outlet obstruction. A suprapubic tube was placed for urinary diversion and a transvesical approach was used for tissue diagnosis. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of prostatic rhabdomyosarcoma. Patient underwent chemotherapy regiment with VAC (vincristine, actinomycin D and cyclophosphamide) and subsequently ifosfamide and doxorubicin. Eventually, due to tumo

Spontaneous intraperitoneal bladder rupture is a rare urological case. Repair usually done by operation and conservative management was unusual. We present a case of a 43-year-old man who presented to ED with lower abdominal pain and distension. He underwent a cystoscopy, several rupture and thin bladder wall was found. We decided to managed the patient conservatively with urinary catheter for 1 month. Upon follow up, the patient was in good condition. Conservative treatment with urinary catheter for 1 month may be considered in patients who are in good condition, do not have signs of peritoni

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is defined as persistent or chronic discomfort perceived to be related to the urinary bladder accompanied by urinary urgency or frequency. Pharmacotherapies used to treat IC/BPS include oral and intravesical agents. Oral therapies include amitriptyline, hydroxyzine, cyclosporine A, and pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), although the recent finding of pigmented maculopathy with chronic PPS is very concerning and must be discussed with patients, many of whom will choose to either come off this medicine or not even start it. Intermittent catheterisation (IC) has been in practice for more than 40 years and is considered the gold standard in the management of urinary retention in the neurological bladder. IC has many advantages over indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheterisation, including reducing the risk of infection, protecting the bladder and improving quality of life. However, complications can be caused by the practice of this technique, the most common of which is infection. This review discusses some of the common complications that can occur with the use of intermittent catheterisation, including urinar

We present a case of a 60-year-old woman with chronic lower abdominal pain and green urine. Further workup revealed a cholecystovesicular fistula (CVF), a newly coined term to indicate a fistula between the gallbladder and the urinary bladder. The CVF was treated surgically. The pathophysiology of CVF is thought to result from gallbladder perforation into the liver. Over time, a tract forms inferiorly until it meets another organ, in this case, the urinary bladder. This later complication of the gallbladder disease joins the broader spectrum of cholecystic fistulas. To our knowledge, a CVF has
