Efficacy, Effectiveness, and Quality of Resilience-Building Mobile Health Apps for Military, Veteran, and Public Safety Personnel Populations: Scoping Literature Review and App Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Military members (MMs) and public safety personnel (PSP) are vulnerable to occupational stress injuries because of their job demands. When MMs and PSP transition out of these professions, they may continue to experience mental health challenges. The development and implementation of resilience-building mobile health (mHealth) apps as an emergent mental health intervention platform has allowed for targeted, cost-effective, and easily accessible treatment when in-person therapy may be limited or unavailable. However, current mHealth app development is not regulated, and often lacks b

Digital Technology Access and Health-Related Internet Use Among People Experiencing Homelessness in Hungary: Quantitative Survey.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of digital technology for personal health and well-being. Previous research has revealed that these technologies might provide vulnerable populations, including those who are homeless, better access to health services and thus a greater chance of more personalized care. OBJECTIVE: However, little is known about the relationship between technology and health among people experiencing homelessness in Central and Eastern Europe. This study is part of a series of studies by the Digital Health Research Group at Semmelweis Universit…

Spatial inequalities in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Lombardy, Italy are associated with ageing, population density and low income.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) incidence rate exhibits considerable geographical variations. In Lombardy, the presence of densely populated areas alongside isolated rural municipalities makes analysing health inequalities important. Given their spatial heterogeneity, an explicitly spatial analytical approach is needed. A retrospective ecological study was conducted at the municipal level using data from the Lombardia CARe registry (2021-2024). The incidence of OHCA was calculated for 924 municipalities. Socio-demographic determinants (population density, ageing index and percentage of t

Core Competencies of the Modern Geriatric Cardiologist: A Framework for Comprehensive Cardiovascular Care in Older Adults.

Background: The rapid ageing of the cardiovascular population has profoundly transformed clinical practice, with an increasing proportion of patients presenting advanced age, frailty, multimorbidity, and functional vulnerability. Conventional cardiology models, largely derived from younger and selected populations, often fail to adequately address the complexity of cardiovascular care in older adults. Despite the growing development of cardiogeriatrics, the core competencies required for contemporary geriatric cardiology practice remain insufficiently defined. Methods: This narrative review sy

Review of Fusariosis in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies.

Hematologic malignancies are among the most common cancers worldwide, with incidence nearly doubling between 1990 and 2019. Compared with the general population, patients with these malignancies are at significantly increased risk for invasive fungal disease (IFD) due to prolonged immunosuppression and neutropenia from chemotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, or the underlying disease itself. IFD contributes substantially to morbidity and infection-related mortality in this population, with reported mortality rates ranging from 29% to 90%. Among IFD infections, invasive fusariosis is

Flooding, Sociospatial Risk, and Population Health.

Climate change and population settlement patterns are altering the severity and spatial dimensions of flooding. Despite associational evidence linking flood exposure to population health in the United States, few studies have used counterfactual strategies to address confounding or examined how sociospatial determinations of risk, such as floodplain delineation, affect well-being. Using the case of Hurricane Harvey, I leverage novel, repeated cross-sectional health survey data from Houston immediately predisaster (N = 2,540) and six to nine months postdisaster (N = 2,798), linked to local floo

Psychological Resilience Buffers Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Due to Childhood Trauma in Thai Seniors.

Background and Objectives: Thailand's demographic shift toward an aging population increases vulnerability among older adults to the long-term mental health effects of childhood trauma. While childhood adversity is linked to heightened risks of late-life depression and PTSD, the moderating role of resilience remains underexplored in Thai older adults. This study investigated whether resilience moderates the association between childhood trauma and depressive or PTSD symptoms in this population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 201 older patients (mean age 68.6

Understanding obesity in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a complex and heterogeneous genetic disorder. While short stature is well-documented, data on weight excess in pediatric patients remain sparse and conflicting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents with 22q11.2DS when compared to the general Italian pediatric population and identify risk factors and periods of critical weight gain. METHODS: In this single-center, retrospective study, 61 children with molecularly confirmed 22q11.2DS were followed up for 441 patient-years. Anthropometric

Maternal Malnutrition and Elevated Disease Risk in Offspring.

US populations have seen dramatic increases in the prevalence of chronic disease over the past three generations. Rapid increases in type 2 diabetes and obesity have occurred in all the states but have been particularly striking in the Deep South. These increases have contributed to decreases in life expectancy and to painful elevations in health care costs. The causes of worsening population health are complex and incompletely understood. However, there is strong evidence that vulnerability to chronic conditions is determined in early life. Most chronic diseases are developmentally driven. Th

Prevalence and risk factors of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis among a Ghanaian clinical cohort: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) has been determined to be highly prevalent in countries within the tropical climate region. However, little evidence from studies conducted within this region has been put forward to support this claim. AIM: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of VKC among a Ghanaian clinical cohort. METHODS: A 3-year case-control study was conducted in a tertiary eye care institution, and medical records of patients who had been diagnosed of VKC between 2018 and 2021 were reviewed. RESULTS: Medical records of 3800 patients were reviewed. Some 359 cases

Being a member of a novel transitional case management team for patients with unstable housing: an ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Homeless and unstably housed individuals face barriers in accessing healthcare despite experiencing greater health needs than the general population. Case management programs are effectively used to provide care for this population. However, little is known about the experiences of providers, their needs, and the ways they can be supported in their roles. Connect 2 Care (C2C) is a mobile outreach team that provides transitional case management for vulnerable individuals in a major Canadian city. Using an ethnographic approach, we aimed to describe the experiences of C2C team member

Sinful Foods: Measuring Implicit Associations Between Food Categories and Moral Attributes in Anorexic, Orthorexic, and Healthy Subjects.

Recently, neurocognitive studies have shown that food categorization is sensitive to both the properties of the food stimuli (e.g., calorie content) and the individual characteristics of subjects (e.g., BMI, eating disorders) asked to categorize these stimuli. Furthermore, groups of patients with eating disorders (ED) were described as relying more on moral criteria to form food categories than were control subjects. The present studies built on these seminal articles and aimed to determine whether certain food properties might trigger moral categories preferentially in subjects suffering from

Epidemiology of eating disorders among US adults.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Public policy efforts for prevention of and intervention upon eating disorders is severely limited in the United States due to the paucity of population-based data. This review article summarizes findings regarding eating disorders based on the National Epidemiological Studies on Alcohol and Related Conditions, Third Wave. The studies reviewed provide the most recent epidemiological indicators of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder (BED) in the United States and demonstrate the utility of population-based data for validating the generalizability of f

[Responding to children's emotional and cognitive needs: Applying the cumulative model to the general population].

OBJECTIVES: Several risk factors are associated with neglectful behaviors. Yet their cumulative effect, which refers to the accumulation of risk regardless of the presence or absence of specific factors, remains unknown. This study aims to determine whether risk accumulation predicts caregivers' responses to children's emotional and cognitive needs in the general population and to examine the presence of clinical thresholds. METHOD: A total of 1102 maternal figures of children aged 5 to 9 years old living in Quebec were questioned through a telephone survey. The response to children's emotion
