In Indian childhood cirrhosis (ICC) and related disorders of infancy, hepatic copper overload is associated with cirrhosis. Since copper administration alone has not been shown to induce cirrhosis in animals, synergy between copper and a second hepatotoxin has been suggested. We report the successful outcome of first-line intervention of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in four patients, three of whom had hypercapnic acute respiratory failure (ARF) and one hypoxaemic ARF, secondary to pulmonary oedema. Clinical outcome and hemodynamic effects of unilateral mechanical ventricular support (UMVS) were evaluated in 19 patients with postcardiotomy heart failure refractory to conventional treatment. We evaluated retrospectively the short-term and the long-term prognosis of 105 patients with COPD and prolonged respiratory insufficiency admitted to our respiratory intensive care unit from 1976 to 1980 for acute respiratory failure. All subjects underwent intermittent negative pressure ventilation by means of an iron lung to overcome the acute episode. The developmental growth of the combined right and left ventricles was followed from weaning to senility in rats receiving an unrestricted diet (controls) or pair fed to one half of this food intake. The normal developmental increases in the ventricular weight, protein mass, and nucleic acid contents were retarded by this long term dietary regimen. Tyzzer's disease has been detected in nine unrelated, commercial rabbitries. During the acute stage of the disease, recently weaned rabbits showed profuse watery diarrhoea. Mortality was between 14.2 and 41.2% during the first three weeks of the outbreaks. Eight children 1 to 13 years old, were submitted to OLT. Six patients had normal liver function and complete rehabilitation 4 to 17 months after OLT. The effects of opioid antagonists on seasonal changes in feeding behavior of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during fall, winter, and summer, as well as in bottle-fed fawns are described.
