Conservative condylectomy for management of osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle.

Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign tumors of the skeleton. This tumor is rare in the craniofacial region, with the most common sites of occurrence being the coronoid process of the mandible and the mandibular condyle. Traditionally, the treatments of these lesions include total condylectomy or local resection of the lesion. Conservative condylectomy procedure with reshaping of the remaining condylar neck and repositioning of the articular disk has been suggested. This article aimed to describe a 35-year-old woman with osteochondroma in the left mandibular condyle who was treated b

Elevated compartment pressures from copperhead envenomation successfully treated with antivenin.

BACKGROUND: Copperhead envenomation causes local soft tissue effects; however, associated compartment syndrome is rare. We report a case of a 17-month-old with significantly elevated compartment pressures successfully treated with antivenin and supportive care. CASE REPORT: A 17-month-old girl sustained a copperhead bite to the foot and presented with circumferential edema, erythema, and ecchymosis of the foot and distal ankle. The patient had palpable pulses and was neurologically intact. Four vials of Crotalidae polyvalent immune Fab was initiated and additional doses were administered in a

Bedbugs: a primer for the health-system pharmacist.

PURPOSE: The history and life cycle of bedbugs, the identification and supportive treatment of bedbug bites, and the eradication and prevention of bedbug infestations are reviewed. SUMMARY: Cimex lectularius, known commonly as the bedbug, is a growing problem in the United States. While the bedbug population declined between the 1950s and the late 20th century, recent increases in international travel and immigration, the banning of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, and insecticide resistance have caused a resurgence of bedbug infestations. Infestations can be identified based on clinical pres

Surgical treatment of a patient with peliosis hepatis: a case report.

This report describes a case of a space-occupying lesion in the right liver in a 38-year-old man who was found to have peliosis hepatis. Clinical data of this patient were presented, including medical history, laboratory test and imaging results, and postoperative pathological findings (hematoxylin and eosin staining). Review of his medical history showed that the patient had been bitten by a dog three years earlier. B-mode ultrasonography revealed an uneven echo mass in the right hemiliver, and magnetic resonance imaging scans also showed a mass in the anterior segment of the right liver. Upo

Borrelial lymphocytoma--a case report of a pregnant woman.

Borrelial lymphocytoma (BL) is a rare cutaneous manifestation of Lyme borreliosis. Epidemiological data show that BL is more common in children than in adults. It presents as a single bluish-red swelling located on the earlobe in children, near the nipple in adults. In our paper, we present a case of a pregnant woman with BL, which appeared after tick bite and disappeared completely after antibiotic therapy. The aim of the paper was to emphasize that in tick-borne disease endemic areas BL should be taken into consideration in cases of skin lesions.

[Borreliosis in occupational medicine practice].

Lyme borreliosis is a multisystem infectious disease that can occur from bites by infected ticks. It can appear at persons exposed professionally for staying in tick feeding environment as well as persons staying in such an environment occasionally. For a few years the Lyme disease is taking the leading place amongst occupational diseases and first amongst infectious occupational diseases. Lyme disease is a major problem especially in wooded areas of Poland however it can occur throughout the country. The variety of clinical and serological pictures is creating everyday diagnostic problems. Th

The management of Ixodes scapularis bites in the upper Midwest.

Ixodes scapularis, commonly referred to as the deer tick, is the vector of Lyme disease and anaplasmosis; both illnesses are endemic to the upper Midwest. Avoidance of I scapularis bites is the primary preventative strategy for both infections. Antibiotic prophylaxis has been demonstrated to prevent Lyme disease, but similar studies have not investigated antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of anaplasmosis. Thus, recommendations regarding the management of I scopularis bites are focused on the prevention of Lyme disease. This paper reviews the prevailing antibiotic prophylaxis recommendat

Common things are common: a case series of oral foreign bodies in paediatric patients.

Reports of foreign bodies in the oral cavity are few in number. Three cases of children of varying ages, presenting with oral foreign bodies, and their subsequent diagnosis and management, are described. The importance of considering foreign bodies, as part of a differential diagnosis in paediatric patients, where aetiology is uncertain and clinical appearance is unusual, is highlighted.

Caterpillars and moths: Part I. Dermatologic manifestations of encounters with Lepidoptera.

Caterpillars are the larval forms of moths and butterflies and belong to the order Lepidoptera. Caterpillars, and occasionally moths, have evolved defense mechanisms, including irritating hairs, spines, venoms, and toxins that may cause human disease. The pathologic mechanisms underlying reactions to Lepidoptera are poorly understood. Lepidoptera are uncommonly recognized causes of localized stings, eczematous or papular dermatitis, and urticaria. Part I of this two-part series on caterpillars and moths reviews Lepidopteran life cycles, terminology, and the epidemiology of caterpillar and moth

Trigeminal neuropathic pain following honeybee sting: a case report.

The neurological complications of bee venom poisoning vary from optic neuritis to pontine hematoma. However, to our best knowledge, trigeminal neuropathic pain secondary to bee sting has not been reported previously in the literature. We report the case of a 52-year-old male patient with right-sided trigeminal neuropathic pain that began a month earlier, following a honeybee sting to the right forehead. The patient was successfully treated by CT-guided percutaneous trigeminal tractotomy. The present report demonstrated that a honeybee sting may result in trigeminal neuropathic pain and CT-guid

Biomechanical response of a mandible in a patient affected with hemifacial microsomia before and after distraction osteogenesis.

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) has gained wide acceptance in the craniofacial surgery due to the huge possibilities it offers. However this orthopaedic field is under continuous development as it still presents uncertainties. In this context, numerical modelling/analysis may help us to design patient specific treatments once they have been experimentally verified. This paper presents a finite element analysis of the biomechanical behavior of a patient's mandible with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) before and after distraction. In order to check the effectiveness of the clinical protocol, the predi

[Necrotic arachnidism in the south of France: two clinical cases of loxoscelism].

BACKGROUND: loxosceles spiders are found throughout the world and are responsible for numerous cases of envenomation in America and Southern Europe. We describe, to our knowledge for the first time in France, two clinical cases of cutaneous loxoscelism. CASE REPORT: two cases of skin necrosis arising after supposed spider bites were grouped together because of their similar clinical presentation: an initial painless bite and rapid development of an inflammatory and painful cutaneous lesion with a central hemorrhagic bulla surrounded by a perimeter of blanched skin (the "red, white, and blue"
