The authors investigated clinical manifestations of hyperandrogenism in infertile women with hirsutism. Assessment of accurate quantitative indicators (hirsutic number, clitoral index, body mass growth coefficient and morphogram) made it possible to characterize the manifestations of hyperandrogenism in infertile women (n = 112). Correlation analysis revealed that the state of hirsutism and the body mass growth relations are the most sensitive indicators of the action of androgens (testosterone) in fertile age.

Energy expenditure was measured in four geldings (433 to 520 kg) during submaximal exercise on a racetrack using a mobile open-circuit indirect respiration calorimeter. Wernicke's encephalopathy has been associated rarely with fasting. We describe a middle-aged patient who presented in a subacute fashion with features of thiamin deficiency after marked weight reduction. Associated features were chest pain, possibly related to cardiac involvement, and a proximal myopathy. The Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome has been described in the literature for around 100 years. However, the classic triad of ataxia, ophthalmoplegia and impaired conscious state that occurs in a person with chronic alcoholism is by no means its exclusive presentation.

Resting energy expenditures, the thermic responses to a standard meal (2.09 MJ 'Ensure') and energy intakes were measured in eight age/weight matched pairs of female smokers and non-smokers. Intrarenal handling of uric acid was studied in 12 patients with essential hypertension under spironolactone treatment (200 mg/day). Guinea pigs well supplied with vitamin C show a linear relation between serum alkaline phosphatase activity and body weight. Investigations in guinea pigs induced to low ascorbic-acid levels by two different procedures (complete and partial deprivation of vitamin C) demonstrated that the activity of the alkaline phosphatase is not generally decreased in the serum of ascorbic-acid-deficient guinea pigs. Decreases of the serum enzyme levels reported in guinea pigs completely deprived of vitamin C, i.e. in acute deficiency, may be due to stress factors.

A two-dimensional skeletal model of the knee was constructed to estimate joint compression force in varus of valgus osteoarthrotic knees. Angle and length constants and variables were measured for 100 X-ray films of normal and osteoarthrotic subjects while they were standing on one foot. The results showed that the tibial tilting angle to the floor primarily determined the joint forces in the deformed knees. The angle has mechanically more significance than the femoro-tibial tilting angle which has been widely used clinically. The results have some clinical implications.
