Disorders of calcium metabolism are not generally considered important either clinically or pathophysiologically in essential hypertension. Recent reports, though, suggest that increased parathyroid gland function may be one of the more common endocrine disturbances associated with hypertension. Changes in calcium and phosphate absorption in response to treatment with small doses of oral 1,25 (OH)2D3 were studied in 10 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis by means of a combined radio-isotope technique. There was a marked improvement in the fractional rates of absorption of calcium (P less than 0.01) and phosphate (0.05 P less than 0.1) after treatment. This implies than there is no end organ unresponsiveness to the action of active Vitamin D metabolites at the intestinal level in primary biliary cirrhosis.

The anterior teeth of five adult monkeys were divided into two groups. In one group the pulps were removed and the teeth were left open to oral fluids. The other group had vital pulps. Five teeth were designated as controls. The pulp canals of both groups were debrided, filed, and flushed thoroughly. Transient hypomagnesiaemia was noted postoperatively, particularly on the 1st day in patients submitted to intestinal procedures. Slight hypocalcaemia was also observed; this was often related to a low plasma Mg value. A hormonal mechanism is presumed to be the cause of this stress-linked fall in blood magnesium.

In the reduction process of sulphates by Desulfovibrio desulfuricans suitable concentration of mineral salts plays an important role. The interaction of magnesium with two other mineral elements, calcium and zinc, was studied in maternal tissues and fetuses of pregnant rats fed a magnesium deficient diet throughout gestation. Reduction in maternal femur magnesium and a trend for increased kidney calcium reflected the dietary magnesium deficiency. In fetuses, however, total magnesium content was reduced and , in addition, fetal zinc content was also lower than normal in the group most severly deficient in magnesium. The possible interpretation of this magnesium-zinc interaction is discussed.

Scorpion toxins, the basic miniproteins of scorpion venom, stimulated the passive uptake of Na+ and Ca2+ in chick embryo heart cells. Half-maximum stimulation was obtained for 20-30 nM Na+ and 40-50 nM Ca2+. Scorpion toxin-activated Na+ and Ca2+ uptakes were fully inhibited by tetrodotoxin, a specific inhibitor of the action potential Na+ ionophore in excitable membranes.
