Comparison of the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and interferential current therapies in central sensitization in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: This study is primarily aimed to determine whether transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and interferential current (IFC) treatments have any effect on central sensitization (CS) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to investigate which treatment is more effective. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 80 patients were randomized into four treatment groups: TENS, Plasebo-TENS, IFC, and Plasebo-IFC. All interventions were applied 5 times a week for 2 weeks. Primary outcome was pressure pain threshold (PPT), which is accepted as the objective indicator

Osteomalacia in Adults: A Practical Insight for Clinicians.

The term osteomalacia (OM) refers to a series of processes characterized by altered mineralization of the skeleton, which can be caused by various disorders of mineral metabolism. OM can be genetically determined or occur due to acquired disorders, among which the nutritional origin is particularly relevant, due to its wide epidemiological extension and its nature as a preventable disease. Among the hereditary diseases associated with OM, the most relevant is X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH), which manifests in childhood, although its consequences persist into adulthood where it can acquire spe

INT-767-A Dual Farnesoid-X Receptor (FXR) and Takeda G Protein-Coupled Receptor-5 (TGR5) Agonist Improves Survival in Rats and Attenuates Intestinal Ischemia Reperfusion Injury.

Intestinal ischemia is a potentially catastrophic emergency, with a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Currently, no specific pharmacological treatments are available. Previous work demonstrated that pre-treatment with obeticholic acid (OCA) protected against ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). Recently, a more potent and water-soluble version has been synthesized: Intercept 767 (INT-767). The aim of this study was to investigate if intravenous treatment with INT-767 can improve outcomes after IRI. In a validated rat model of IRI (60 min ischemia + 60 min reperfusion), three groups were inve

SARM1 deletion delays cerebellar but not spinal cord degeneration in an enhanced mouse model of SPG7 deficiency.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia is a neurological condition characterized by predominant axonal degeneration in long spinal tracts, leading to weakness and spasticity in the lower limbs. The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-consuming enzyme SARM1 has emerged as a key executioner of axonal degeneration upon nerve transection and in some neuropathies. An increase in the nicotinamide mononucleotide/NAD+ ratio activates SARM1, causing catastrophic NAD+ depletion and axonal degeneration. However, the role of SARM1 in the pathogenesis of hereditary spastic paraplegia has not been investigated.

Retinal neovascularization as self-organized criticality on ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography imaging of diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Do the distributions of surface area of non-perfusion (NP) and neovascularization (NV) on ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography (UWF FA) in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) differ significantly? SUBJECTS/METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients who had a UWF FA taken for DR at the Kellogg Eye Center from January 2009 to May 2018. Exclusion criteria included previous panretinal photocoagulation and significant media opacity (e.g., vitreous haemorrhage or significant cataract). UWF FAs were manually segmented for surface areas of NP and NV. The total areas per p

Anatomical damage caused by Bacillus thuringiensis variety israelensis in yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti (L.) larvae revealed by micro-computed tomography.

With micro-computed tomography techniques, using the single-distance phase-retrieval algorithm phase contrast, we reconstructed enhanced rendered images of soft tissues of Aedes aeqypti fourth instar larvae after Bti treatment. In contrast to previous publications based on conventional microscopy, either optical or electron microscopy, which were limited to partial studies, mostly in the form of histological sections, here we show for the first time the effects of Bti on the complete internal anatomy of an insect. Using 3D rendered images it was possible to study the effect of the bacterium in

Peptide Amphiphile Supramolecular Nanofibers Designed to Target Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a localized dilation of the aorta located in the abdomen that poses a severe risk of death when ruptured. The cause of AAA is not fully understood, but degradation of medial elastin due to elastolytic matrix metalloproteinases is a key step leading to aortic dilation. Current therapeutic interventions are limited to surgical repair to prevent catastrophic rupture. Here, we report the development of injectable supramolecular nanofibers using peptide amphiphile molecules designed to localize to AAA by targeting fragmented elastin, matrix metalloproteinase 2

Depressive symptoms in youth with ADHD: the role of impairments in cognitive emotion regulation.

Youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk to develop co-morbid depression. Identifying factors that contribute to depression risk may allow early intervention and prevention. Poor emotion regulation, which is common in adolescents, is a candidate risk factor. Impaired cognitive emotion regulation is a fundamental characteristic of depression and depression risk in the general population. However, little is known about cognitive emotion regulation in youth with ADHD and its link to depression and depression risk. Using explicit and implicit measures, this

Associations between COVID-19 Work-Related Stressors and Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms among Chinese Doctors and Nurses: Application of Stress-Coping Theory.

Healthcare workers are vulnerable to posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) due to stressful work during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate whether the associations between COVID-19 work-related stressors and PTSS would be mediated by maladaptive and adaptive coping strategies and moderated by perceived family support based on stress-coping theory. An anonymous online survey was conducted among 1449 doctors and nurses in five hospitals in China between October and November 2020 during the "post-outbreak" period. The prevalence of PTSS assessed by the Posttraumatic Symptom Sca

Clinical relevance of attentional biases in pediatric chronic pain: an eye-tracking study.

Attentional biases have been posited as one of the key mechanisms underlying the development and maintenance of chronic pain and co-occurring internalizing mental health symptoms. Despite this theoretical prominence, a comprehensive understanding of the nature of biased attentional processing in chronic pain and its relationship to theorized antecedents and clinical outcomes is lacking, particularly in youth. This study used eye-tracking to assess attentional bias for painful facial expressions and its relationship to theorized antecedents of chronic pain and clinical outcomes. Youth with chro

Sleep Disturbances and Disorders in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis and Total Knee Arthroplasty.

➤: There is increasing evidence that patient-reported outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are associated with psychosocial factors and pain catastrophizing. Sleep disturbance, pain, and mental health have a complex interaction, which, if unrecognized, can be associated with impaired patient-reported outcomes and dissatisfaction following TKA. ➤: The gold standard of objective sleep assessment is polysomnography, which is not feasible to use routinely for TKA patients. Wearable devices are a validated and less costly alternative. ➤: Subjective sleep measures, such as the Pittsbur

Development and validation of a nomogram for esophagogastric variceal bleeding in liver cirrhosis: A cohort study in 1099 cases.

OBJECTIVES: Esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EVB) is a catastrophic complication of decompensated liver cirrhosis. We aimed to establish a nomogram based on noninvasive clinical and imaging variables to predict the risk of EVB. METHODS: The cut-off value of each variable was determined through univariate regression analysis. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the risk factors and establish predictive models. The nomogram was established and validated using the calibration discrimination
