No effect of IVF culture medium on cognitive development of 9-year-old children.

STUDY QUESTION: Do embryo culture media used during an IVF/ICSI treatment have an effect on cognitive development of singleton IVF children at 9 years of age? SUMMARY ANSWER: Cognitive development of children born after culture in two different embryo culture media is comparable. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Previously, we have shown that the culture medium used in an IVF/ICSI treatment affects birthweight and weight at 2 years of age after alternating assignment to embryo culture in either K-SCICM (Cook) or G1™ Version 3 (Vitrolife). Children with low birthweight are known to have an increased ri

Experiences of Ableism in Pediatric Healthcare.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence of ableism in pediatric health care, but our limited understanding of the experiences of ableism inhibits further evaluation and intervention. The study objective was to describe community perspectives of the experiences of ableism in pediatric health care for children with disabilities. METHODS: Participants completed a group concept mapping study using web-based software to input experiences of ableism in health care. Following a formal statement reduction, participants sorted unique experiences into conceptual clusters. Data were mapped to generate a s…

Foreign-body aspiration into the lower airways in adults; multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Foreign-body aspiration is common in children aged 6 months to 3 years. However, with the aging population and increasing prevalence of disabilities such as hemiparesis and neuromuscular diseases in adults, an increased incidence of aspiration is expected. METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective, observational study in four major referral hospitals in Daegu, South Korea, between 2000 and 2019. We included patients aged over 18 years who were evaluated for tracheobronchial foreign-body aspiration by flexible bronchoscopy. Comorbidities, type and location of foreign body, and

What We Know and Need to Know about Literacy Interventions for Elementary Students with Reading Difficulties and Disabilities, including Dyslexia.

The purpose of this paper is to describe what we know and what we still need to learn about literacy intervention for children who experience significant difficulties learning to read. We reviewed 14 meta-analyses and systematic reviews of experimental and quasi-experimental studies published in the last decade that examined the effects of reading and writing interventions in the elementary grades, including research focused on students with reading difficulties and disabilities, including dyslexia. We attended to moderator analyses, when available, to further refine what we know and need to l

Corneal Complications And Visual Impairment In Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Vernal kerato-conjunctivitis (VKC) is an infrequent but serious form of allergic conjunctivitis common in warm and humid areas where air is rich in allergens. It affects both eyes asymmetrically. Although VKC is a self-limiting disease but visions affecting corneal complications influence the quality of life in school children. The aim of this study was to list the corneal complications due to this condition and to find out the extent of visual impairment among VKC patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the department of Ophthalmology, Benazir Bhutto Shahee

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in preterm brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: White matter injury and abnormal maturation are thought to be major contributors to the neurodevelopmental disabilities observed in children and adolescents who were born preterm. Early detection of abnormal white matter maturation is important in the design of preventive, protective, and rehabilitative strategies for the management of the preterm infant. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (d-MRI) has become a valuable tool in assessing white matter maturation and injury in survivors of preterm birth. In this review, we aim to (1) describe the basic concepts of d-MRI;

The child who has severe neurologic impairment.

The formulation of a diagnosis in a child who has neurologic impairment should not (except in extreme circumstances) be made on the basis of a single finding. For example, the presence of delayed milestones, primitive or exaggerated reflexes, abnormal muscle tone, abnormal posture, abnormal neurologic examination, and temporal course should all be used to make the diagnosis of cerebral palsy. Furthermore, because each condition has a spectrum of disabilities from mild to severe involvement, determination of the child's abilities and impairments should be part of the diagnostic process. Because

A new pediatric trauma center quality benchmarking metric: Center-level variability in postinjury functional impairment using the Functional Status Scale (FSS).

BACKGROUND: Over 7 million children are injured annually in the United States, leading to 500,000 disability-adjusted life years. Functional outcomes after injury, however, are not routinely measured. Whether disability is modifiable by trauma center care remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess variability between trauma centers in functional impairment rates. METHODS: The "Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life and Functional Outcomes after Pediatric Trauma" prospective observational dataset was analyzed. Functional status among injured children (≤14 y) was assessed at

Population-Based Psychiatric Comorbidity in Children and Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis.

UNLABELLED: Psychiatric comorbidity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a subject of critical scientific importance, affecting the quality of life, prognosis, and functional outcomes. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders vary considerably according to variables such as index subject characteristics, study setting, sampling frame, diagnostic methods used, as well as country of geographic origin. To date, most studies comprise clinical or treatment referral samples in tertiary care or subjects enrolled in clinical trials and genetic cohort collections. Such samples carry the potential for ov

p75NTR modulation prevents cellular, cortical activity and cognitive dysfunctions caused by perinatal hypoxia.

Children who have experienced moderate perinatal hypoxia are at risk of developing long-lasting subtle cognitive and behavioural deficits, including learning disabilities and emotional problems. Understanding the underlying mechanisms is an essential step for designing targeted therapy. Fast-spiking, parvalbumin (PV)-positive GABAergic interneurons modulate the generation of gamma oscillations, which, in turn, regulate many cognitive functions, including goal-directed attentional processing and cognitive flexibility. Owing to their fast firing rate, PV cell function requires high levels of ene

Preclinical neurorehabilitation with environmental enrichment confers cognitive and histological benefits in a model of pediatric asphyxial cardiac arrest.

Pediatric asphyxial cardiac arrest (ACA) often leaves children with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities that affect overall quality of life, yet rehabilitation is neither routinely nor systematically provided. Environmental enrichment (EE) is considered a preclinical model of neurorehabilitation and thus we sought to investigate its efficacy in our established model of pediatric ACA. Male Sprague-Dawley rat pups (post-natal day 16-18) were randomly assigned to ACA (9.5 min) or Sham injury. After resuscitation, the rats were assigned to 21 days of EE or standard (STD) housing during

Long-term outcomes of major upper extremity replantations.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes of major upper extremity replantations are infrequently reported. It is believed that replantation is indicated for amputations at all levels in children and for all distal amputations in adults. Replantations of arm or proximal forearm amputations in adults are controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results of major upper extremity replantations, defined as those that are transmetacarpal, through the wrist, forearm, elbow or arm. METHODS: A review of these types of replantations performed at the authors' institution from 2002 to 2012 was conducted. Patients

Longitudinal Perspectives on Health and Medical Research in Korea: Strengths and Limitations of Key Panel Datasets.

Rapid population ageing, the growing burden of chronic diseases, and evolving healthcare demands have heightened the need for robust longitudinal data to support evidence-based health policy and interventions. Longitudinal panel surveys, which repeatedly collect data from the same individuals over extended periods, offer detailed insights into dynamic health-related changes and their determinants. South Korea has established numerous national panel surveys over recent decades; however, systematic comparative assessments across these surveys-particularly concerning their health-related variable

Pre-Clinical and Clinical Therapies for Traumatic Brain Injury: Where Do We Stand in Pediatrics?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of death and disability in children. There are no Food and Drug Administration-approved therapies to specifically treat pediatric TBI. Compared with adults, there has been limited funding and investigation into age-specific injury patterns and therapies following trauma to the developing brain. This review summarizes therapies on early pathogenic mechanisms of secondary injury, specifically excitotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative injury and neuroinflammation, which have been evaluated in pre-clinical and clinical moderat

A case of adrenal myelolipoma complicated with Prader-Willi syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Prader-Willi syndrome is a congenital disorder that occurs in one in 10 000-30 000 children and is characterized by obesity, short stature, and intellectual disability. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old male patient with Prader-Willi syndrome presented with an enlarged adrenal tumor. Computed tomography detected a well-defined mass. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an increased signal intensity predominantly in fatty areas, suggesting adrenal myelolipoma. Laparoscopic left adrenalectomy was performed. Postoperatively, the patient developed mild pulmonary atelectasis, myelolipo

Multimodal Neurologic Monitoring in Children With Acute Brain Injury.

Children with acute neurologic illness are at high risk of mortality and long-term neurologic disability. Severe traumatic brain injury, cardiac arrest, stroke, and central nervous system infection are often complicated by cerebral hypoxia, hypoperfusion, and edema, leading to secondary neurologic injury and worse outcome. Owing to the paucity of targeted neuroprotective therapies for these conditions, management emphasizes close physiologic monitoring and supportive care. In this review, we will discuss advanced neurologic monitoring strategies in pediatric acute neurologic illness, emphasizi
