Western-style diet impairs stimulus control by food deprivation state cues: Implications for obesogenic environments.

In western and westernized societies, large portions of the population live in what are considered to be "obesogenic" environments. Among other things, obesogenic environments are characterized by a high prevalence of external cues that are associated with highly palatable, energy-dense foods. One prominent hypothesis suggests that these external cues become such powerful conditioned elicitors of appetitive and eating behavior that they overwhelm the internal, physiological mechanisms that serve to maintain energy balance. The present research investigated a learning mechanism that may underli

Scopolamine and amphetamine produce similar decision-making deficits on a rat gambling task via independent pathways.

Disorders characterized by disturbed cholinergic signaling, such as schizophrenia, exhibit impaired performance on measures of real-world cost/benefit decision-making. Whether the cholinergic system contributes to the choice deficits observed is currently unknown. We therefore determined the effects of broad-acting agonists and antagonists at the nicotinic and muscarinic receptor on decision making, as measured by the rodent gambling task (rGT). Given the anatomical and functional connectivity of the cholinergic and dopaminergic systems, we also sought to modulate amphetamine's previously repo

Sex-related differences in auditory processing in adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: A magnetoencephalographic study.

Children exposed to substantial amounts of alcohol in utero display a broad range of morphological and behavioral outcomes, which are collectively referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Common to all children on the spectrum are cognitive and behavioral problems that reflect central nervous system dysfunction. Little is known, however, about the potential effects of variables such as sex on alcohol-induced brain damage. The goal of the current research was to utilize magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine the effect of sex on brain dynamics in adolescents and young adults wi

Distinctions between sluggish cognitive tempo, ADHD-IN, and depression symptom dimensions in Spanish first-grade children.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of a new parent rating scale of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT). SCT was defined with 10 symptom domains--daydreams; attention fluctuates; absentminded; loses train of thought; easily confused; seems drowsy; thinking is slow; slow-moving; low initiative; and easily bored, needs stimulation--with each domain represented by multiple examples. Mothers' and fathers' ratings of SCT, ADHD-IN, ADHD-HI, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and depression symptoms along with ratings of academic and social impairment were obtained for a sample of 8

BMI changes in children and adolescents attending a specialized childhood obesity center: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Multidisciplinary group therapies for obese children and adolescents are effective but difficult to implement. There is a crucial need to evaluate simpler management programs that target the obese child and his family. This study aimed to determine changes in body mass indexes (BMI) after individual family-based obesity intervention with a pediatrician in a specialized obesity center for child and adolescent. METHODS: This cohort study included 283 patients (3.3 to 17.1 years, mean 10.7 ± 2.9) attending the Pediatric Obesity Care Program of the Geneva University Hospitals. Medical

In-situation safety behaviors among patients with panic disorder: descriptive and correlational study.

AIM: In-situation safety behaviors play an important role in the maintenance of anxiety because they prevent patients from experiencing unambiguous disconfirmation of their unrealistic beliefs about feared catastrophes. Strategies for identifying particular safety behaviors, however, have not been sufficiently investigated. The aims of the present study were to (i) develop a comprehensive list of safety behaviors seen in panic disorder and to examine their frequency; and (ii) correlate the safety behaviors with panic attack symptoms, agoraphobic situations and treatment response. METHODS: The

Impairment-driven cancer rehabilitation: an essential component of quality care and survivorship.

Adult cancer survivors suffer an extremely diverse and complex set of impairments, affecting virtually every organ system. Both physical and psychological impairments may contribute to a decreased health-related quality of life and should be identified throughout the care continuum. Recent evidence suggests that more cancer survivors have a reduced health-related quality of life as a result of physical impairments than due to psychological ones. Research has also demonstrated that the majority of cancer survivors will have significant impairments and that these often go undetected and/or untre

Δ(9)Tetrahydrocannabinol impairs reversal learning but not extra-dimensional shifts in rhesus macaques.

Expansion of medical marijuana use in the US and the recently successful decriminalization of recreational marijuana in two States elevates interest in the specific cognitive effects of Δ(9)tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)THC), the major psychoactive constituent of marijuana. Controlled laboratory studies in nonhuman primates provide mixed evidence for specific effects of Δ(9)THC in learning and memory tasks, with a suggestion that frontal-mediated tasks may be the most sensitive. In this study, adult male rhesus monkeys were trained on tasks which assess reversal learning, extradimensional attentio

Extracellular alpha-synuclein oligomers modulate synaptic transmission and impair LTP via NMDA-receptor activation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common representative of a group of disorders known as synucleinopathies, in which misfolding and aggregation of α-synuclein (a-syn) in various brain regions is the major pathological hallmark. Indeed, the motor symptoms in PD are caused by a heterogeneous degeneration of brain neurons not only in substantia nigra pars compacta but also in other extrastriatal areas of the brain. In addition to the well known motor dysfunction in PD patients, cognitive deficits and memory impairment are also an important part of the disorder, probably due to disruption of sy

Driving simulator performance in patients with possible and probable Alzheimer's disease.

Drivers with more advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been previously associated with an increased rate of motor vehicle accidents. Drivers suffering from early AD are also involved in, and may even cause motor vehicle accidents with greater frequency than "normal" drivers. Consequently there is considerable public concern regarding traffic safety issues for those with AD and subsequently for society, but there has been little research in understanding whether deterioration in driving ability is progressive, or has a sudden onset once the disease has reached a certain severity. Glucocorticoid mechanisms may contribute to ECT-induced retrograde amnesia.

RATIONALE: Cortisol levels rise sharply immediately after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT); the resultant stimulation of steroid receptors in the hippocampus may be beneficial or harmful to cognition, depending on the magnitude of the stimulation. Steroid mechanisms may therefore modulate ECT-induced amnesia. OBJECTIVES: Using mifepristone (a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist) as a chemical probe, we sought to examine steroid mechanisms in an animal model of ECT-induced retrograde amnesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult, male Wistar rats (n = 68) trained in a step-through passive-avoidance tas

A data-driven evaluation of a train-the-trainer program for delirium management in ICUs: a mixed-methods study integrating multidimensional outcome metrics and qualitative insights.

BACKGROUND: Delirium remains a prevalent and serious complication in intensive care units (ICUs), yet the translation of evidence-based monitoring and management into routine nursing practice faces persistent implementation gaps. Sustainable and scalable educational strategies are urgently needed to address this challenge. OBJECTIVES: This study employed a mixed-methods approach to comprehensively evaluate the impact of a train-the-trainer (TTT) delirium education program using a multidimensional outcome framework. Quantitatively, we assessed changes in ICU nurses' competencies across the lea

Implementation of a fully virtual enterprise-wide clinical evidence-based suicide prevention program in the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs: the suicide prevention 2.0 clinical telehealth initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Veteran death by suicide is a complex issue made up of many factors. Despite the high need for mental health treatment, and treatments that specifically target suicide, evidence-based psychotherapies (EBPs) are difficult to access, even more so in rural areas. In concordance with the 2018 National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide, VA suicide prevention leadership developed Suicide Prevention 2.0 (SP 2.0) to implement a public health model that includes community-based prevention strategies and improves clinical interventions within VA. The Suicide Prevention 2.0 Clinical T

Hyperspectral retinal imaging to detect Alzheimer's disease in a memory clinic setting.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature indicate retinal hyperspectral imaging as a non-invasive method with the potential for identifying amyloid-beta (Aβ) protein deposits. Current diagnostic methods, such as cerebrospinal fluid analysis or positron emission tomography, are costly, invasive, and non-scalable. Hyperspectral imaging offers a potentially accessible alternative for early detection of Alzheimer's disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of retinal hyperspectral imaging in identifying Aβ-positive patients within a clinical cohort from a memory clinic. METHODS: A pro

On the role of visual feedback and physiotherapist-patient interaction in robot-assisted gait training: an eye-tracking and HD-EEG study.

BACKGROUND: Treadmill based Robotic-Assisted Gait Training (t-RAGT) provides for automated locomotor training to help the patient achieve a physiological gait pattern, reducing the physical effort required by therapist. By introducing the robot as a third agent to the traditional one-to-one physiotherapist-patient (Pht-Pt) relationship, the therapist might not be fully aware of the patient's motor performance. This gap has been bridged by the integration in rehabilitation robots of a visual FeedBack (FB) that informs about patient's performance. Despite the recognized importance of FB in t-RAG
