Human Babesia odocoilei and Bartonella spp. co-infections in the Americas.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, Babesia and Bartonella species co-infections in patients with chronic, nonspecific illnesses have continued to challenge and change the collective medical understanding of "individual pathogen" vector-borne infectious disease dynamics, pathogenesis and epidemiology. The objective of this case series is to provide additional molecular documentation of Babesia odocoilei infection in humans in the Americas and to emphasize the potential for co-infection with a Bartonella species. METHODS: The development of improved and more sensitive molecular diagnostic techniques,

Age-specific and sex-specific risks for HCC in African-born persons with chronic hepatitis B without cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: The international recommendations of HCC surveillance for African-born persons with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) without cirrhosis are divergent, probably due to scarce data on incidence rate (IR) for HCC. METHODS: We assembled a cohort with prospectively collected data of Swedish residents of African origin with diagnosed CHB without cirrhosis at baseline from 1990 to 2015. Data from nationwide registers were used to calculate the sex-specific IR and IR ratio (incidence rate ratios) in relation to age, comorbidities, and birth region, using a generalized linear model with a log-link

DUSP1 mRNA modulation during porcine circovirus type 2 and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus co-infection regulates viruses replication.

The effects of porcine circovirus type 2b (PCV2b) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) co-infection in epithelial cells of the swine respiratory tract is unknown. In the present study, the newborn pig trachea cell line NPTr-CD163, which is permissive to both viruses, was persistently infected with PCV2b and then with PRRSV. Viral replication, cell viability, cytokines' mRNA expression, and modulation of cellular genes expression were evaluated in infected cells. In NPTr-CD163 co-infection model, PCV2b replication was enhanced while PRRSV replication was suppressed. C

Clinical characteristics, risk factors and outcomes of Klebsiella pneumoniae pneumonia developing secondary Klebsiella pneumoniae bloodstream infection.

PURPOSE: The clinical characteristics of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP) pneumonia and KP bloodstream infection (KP-BSI) are often reported, while the risk factors for KP pneumonia developing into secondary KP-BSI (KP-pneumonia/KP-BSI) are largely unknown. Therefore, this study attempted to investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors and outcomes of KP-pneumonia/KP-BSI. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary hospital between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2020. The patients were divided into groups of KP pneumonia alone and KP pneumonia/KP-BSI, and t

Co-infection dynamics of COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS.

Although there are many results that can be used to treat and prevent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), these diseases continue to be public health concerns and cause socioeconomic consequences. Following compromised immunity, COVID-19 is considered to be a challenge for people with HIV. People with advanced HIV are considered a vulnerable population at high risk in several case studies that discuss COVID-19 and HIV co-infection. As there is no cure for HIV and there is a chance of contracting COVID-19 again, co-infection continues to pose a problem. T

Chronic active Epstein-Barr exacerbated by COVID-19 co-infection.

A 60-year-old Hispanic female was admitted with recurrent fevers, altered mental status, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. Initially, sepsis was presumed because of recurrent urinary tract infection with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli. Despite appropriate therapy, her clinical condition continued to decline. An extensive workup was obtained to determine the source of her ailments. Bone marrow biopsy was negative for leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndrome; fluorescence in situ hybridization and a cytogenetic panel were normal; a lumbar puncture

The Microbiological Etiology of Fracture-Related Infection.

PURPOSE: Fracture-related infection (FRI) is an important complication related to orthopaedic trauma. Although the scientific interest with respect to the diagnosis and treatment of FRI is increasing, data on the microbiological epidemiology remains limited. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological epidemiology related to FRI, including the association with clinical symptoms and antimicrobial susceptibility data. The secondary aim was to analyze whether there was a relationship between the time to onset of infection and the microbiological etiology of FRI.

A Mouse Model for the Transition of Streptococcus pneumoniae from Colonizer to Pathogen upon Viral Co-Infection Recapitulates Age-Exacerbated Illness.

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is an asymptomatic colonizer of the nasopharynx in most individuals but can progress to a pulmonary and systemic pathogen upon influenza A virus (IAV) infection. Advanced age enhances host susceptibility to secondary pneumococcal pneumonia and is associated with worsened disease outcomes. The host factors driving those processes are not well defined, in part due to a lack of animal models that reproduce the transition from asymptomatic colonization to severe clinical disease. This paper describes a novel mouse model that recreates the transition of pneum

Enhanced detection of Giardia duodenalis mixed assemblage infections in pre-weaned dairy calves using next generation sequencing.

Giardia duodenalis is one of the most common parasitic causes of gastrointestinal illness in humans worldwide with widespread infections in mammalian hosts. It frequently infects cattle, producing a high number of cysts. Cattle can harbor both host-adapted assemblage E and human pathogenic assemblages A and B. Previous studies have demonstrated that conventional molecular methods lack the sensitivity required for detecting mixed infections and that the occurrence of mixed infections in cattle are likely underestimated. To investigate the presence of mixed assemblage infections in cattle, 2539

Temporal dynamics of oropharyngeal microbiome among SARS-CoV-2 patients reveals continued dysbiosis even after Viral Clearance.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has posed multiple challenges to global public health. Clinical features and sequela of SARS-CoV-2 infection include long-term and short-term complications often clinically indistinguishable from bacterial sepsis and acute lung infection. Post-hoc studies of previous SARS outbreaks postulate secondary bacterial infections with microbial dysbiosis. Oral microbial dysbiosis, particularly the altered proportion of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, observed in other respiratory virus infection, like influenza, has shown to be a

The influenza-injured lung microenvironment promotes MRSA virulence, contributing to severe secondary bacterial pneumonia.

Influenza infection is substantially worsened by the onset of secondary pneumonia caused by bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The bidirectional interaction between the influenza-injured lung microenvironment and MRSA is poorly understood. By conditioning MRSA ex vivo in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid collected from mice at various time points of influenza infection, we found that the influenza-injured lung microenvironment dynamically induces MRSA to increase cytotoxin expression while decreasing metabolic pathways. Occurrence, Genetic Variability of Tomato Yellow Ring Orthotospovirus Population and the Development of Reverse Transcription Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assay for Its Rapid Detection.

Tomato-infecting viruses have been considered as a serious threat to tomato crops in Poland. Therefore, during 2014-2021, 234 tomato samples delivered directly by greenhouse tomato growers to Plant Disease Clinic of IPP-NRI were tested. Eight virus species: pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), tomato yellow ring orthotospovirus (TYRV), tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV), potato virus Y (PVY), cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), tomato black ring virus (TBRV) and tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) were detected in single or mixed infection in 89 samples. The presence of TYRV was established for the first time

Prevalence and Predictors of Liver Fibrosis in People Living with Hepatitis B in Senegal.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the first cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer in West Africa. Although the exposure to additional environmental and infectious risk factors may lead to the faster progression of liver disease, few large-scale studies have evaluated the determinants of HBV-related liver fibrosis in the region. We used transient elastography to evaluate the prevalence of liver fibrosis and assessed the association between HBV markers and significant liver fibrosis in a cohort of people living with HBV in Dakar, Senegal. The prevalence of significant liver fibrosis was 12.5% (

Uncovering the Burden of Dengue in Africa: Considerations on Magnitude, Misdiagnosis, and Ancestry.

Dengue is a re-emerging neglected disease of major public health importance. This review highlights important considerations for dengue disease in Africa, including epidemiology and underestimation of disease burden in African countries, issues with malaria misdiagnosis and co-infections, and potential evidence of genetic protection from severe dengue disease in populations of African descent. The findings indicate that dengue virus prevalence in African countries and populations may be more widespread than reported data suggests, and that the Aedes mosquito vectors appear to be increasing in
