Glycogen storage disease 1b (GSD 1b) is caused by a deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate translocase and the intracellular accumulation of glycogen. The disease presents with failure to thrive, hepatomegaly, hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, as well as neutropenia causing increased susceptibility to pyogenic infections. We present a case of a young woman with GSD 1b who developed acute myelogenous leukemia while on long-term granulocyte colony-stimulating factor therapy. We report the case history of a 75-year-old female patient suffering from extensive gastric antral vascular ectasia (watermelon stomach) with portal hypertension in alcoholic liver cirrhosis. Iron deficiency anaemia, due to chronic blood loss from the antral lesions, required repeated transfusions. We have successfully undertaken the prenatal diagnosis of two hereditary syndromes associating albinism and immune defects. Two different isoforms of subunit VIIa have been found in cytochrome c oxidase isolated from human skeletal muscle. The first 22 residues of the N-terminal amino acid sequences showed 5 differences. Our results provide the first conclusive evidence for the existence of cytochrome c oxidase isoenzymes in man. Since the two cytochrome c oxidase isoforms were both present in skeletal muscle tissue, though not necessarily in the same cell type, this suggests that human cytochrome c oxidase isoforms are not strictly tissue-specific. When diabetes and cardiovascular disease were first classed as possible fibre-deficiency diseases, laboratory and clinical evidence was lacking. Phosphate metabolism was investigated in 26 patients with a spectrum of liver diseases and mean fasting plasma phosphate concentrations were in the low normal range. A standard oral load of phosphate was used to test absorption and was subnormal in the majority of patients with large bile-duct obstruction and alcoholic liver disease.
