SKINTED: an uncommon cutaneous complication of total knee replacement.

Surgery of the knee, injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve, traumatic eczematous dermatitis (SKINTED) involving the skin lateral to the surgical incision/scar area is a site- and procedure-specific diagnosis associated with total knee replacement surgery. It results from autonomic denervation following surgical trauma to the nerve and occurs months to years after surgical trauma. It needs to be differentiated from post traumatic eczema/dermatitis, neuropathic dermatitis and contact dermatitis/sensitization due to topical therapies or implant material. Herein, we report a ca

Moisture-associated skin damage (MASD): A best practice recommendation from Wund-D.A.CH.

Wund-D.A.CH., as the umbrella organization of German-speaking wound treatment societies, has currently developed a best practice recommendation for skin damage caused by body fluids, which is known as moisture-associated skin damage (MASD) in English-speaking countries. In this expert consensus, the diseases incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), intertriginous dermatitis, including intertrigo, gram-negative bacterial toe web infection and toxic contact dermatitis, including periwound and peristomal dermatitis are presented in a differentiated manner. A common feature of these clinical dise

An overview of international clinical trials with halometasone cream.

In international multicentre comparative clinical trials carried out by dermatologists in 717 patients with non-infected acute eczematous dermatoses at 28 trial centres in Austria, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Yugoslavia, halometasone cream exhibited a very satisfactory therapeutic effect in acute contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, nummular dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It yielded 'good' to 'very good' results in 89.7% of the 333 patients treated with halometasone cream. Halometasone cream was significantly more effective than Diproderm, Diprosone and Ultralan creams with res

Response of mycosis fungoides to topical chemotherapy with mechlorethamine.

Seventy-six patients with mycosis fungoides (MF) were given topical mechlorethamine hydrochloride therapy. Allergic contact hypersensitivity reactions to the drug developed in 51 patients (67.1%). Sixty-four patients of the original 76 continued therapy, with 43 (67.2%) achieving a complete remission and 12 (18.8%) achieving a partial remission. Stage I disease responded significantly better than did subsequent, more severe disease stages. The median times to complete remission were 5.6 months, 32.3 months, and 22.3 months for stage I, II, and III disease, respectively. The conditions of patie

Mix it-cograzing with cattle reduces broiler losses and increases broiler range use.

Pasture access allows broilers to perform a wide range of behaviors and is a prerequisite in organic poultry production, but exposes broilers to various potential hazards including predators. Co-grazing broilers with cattle can reduce land use and could offer protection from avian predation. Thus, we aimed to assess the effects of co-grazing on broiler losses, range use, performance, contact dermatitis and broilers' manipulation of cow pats. To this end, across 5 replicates we compared each a treatment group of 54 to 61 broilers co-grazing with 10 young cattle and a similar sized control group

Occupational skin disease in the construction industry.

BACKGROUND: Construction workers have a substantial risk of developing irritant and/or allergic contact dermatitis. Unfortunately, however, there is little population-based epidemiological data relating to occupational skin diseases (OSD) in the European construction industry that allow assessment of preventive measures. OBJECTIVES: In this investigation, the yearly incidence rates and causes of OSD in the construction industry were analysed on the basis of our register in Northern Bavaria. METHODS: From 1990 until 1999, all incidences of OSD in the construction industry were recorded prospe

Rash decisions: diagnosing zinc deficiency in unexplained dermatitis .

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for the body and plays a crucial role in skin integrity, yet zinc deficiency remains an under-recognised cause of dermatitis, particularly in patients with predisposing risk factors. A male in his mid-30s with alcohol-related liver disease and ulcerative colitis presented with a widespread rash. Initial treatment for contact dermatitis and possible herpes simplex virus infection with topical steroids, antivirals and emollients was unsuccessful. His condition worsened, requiring intensive care admission. Imaging revealed bilateral pneumonia, and a skin biopsy

Pediatric chronic hand eczema: Epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management.

Chronic hand eczema (CHE) is persistent inflammatory dermatitis that may significantly affect the quality of life, with psychosocial effects, impact on school, work, and leisure activities, influence on socioeconomic status, and high health care costs. Pediatric-CHE (P-CHE) has a high prevalence yet has not been extensively studied in children and adolescents. There is minimal published data on P-CHE in North America, and no specific management guidelines. Limited prevalence data show broad ranges (0.9%-4.4%) in preschool and school children, with 1 study stating up to 10.0% 1-year prevalence

Skin interaction with absorbent hygiene products.

Skin problems due to the use of absorbent hygiene products, such as diapers, incontinence pads, and feminine sanitary articles, are mostly due to climate or chafing discomfort. If these conditions are allowed to prevail, these may develop into an irritant contact dermatitis and eventually superficial skin infections. Skin humidity and aging skin are among the most significant predisposing and aggravating factors for dermatitis development. Improved product design features are believed to explain the decline in observed diaper dermatitis among infants. Where adult incontinence-related skin prob

Photocontact dermatitis and chloracne: two major occupational and environmental skin diseases induced by different actions of halogenated chemicals.

Among occupational and environmental disorders, contact or photocontact dermatitis and an acneiform eruption are two major skin disorders. Photocontact dermatitis was historically caused by various halogenated salicylanilides, while the acne is induced by halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons and thus called chloracne. Therefore, it should be noted that halogenated chemical compounds are important causative agents in the occupational and environmental medicine. In photocontact dermatitis, photoconjugation of epidermal cells with a photohaptenic halogenated chemical is the initial step. Langerhans

Pediatric dermatoses: three common skin disruptions in infancy.

Skin disruptions account for 20% to 30% of pediatric primary care visits [1]. These disruptions may result from skin infections, inflammatory responses, insect bites, and infestations. This article focuses on the identification and management of skin disruptions related to inflammatory dermatoses. The most common dermatoses in infancy are seborrheic dermatitis, (also known as cradle cap); diaper or primary contact dermatitis; and atopic dermatitis, more commonly referred to as eczema, an entity that has yet to be clearly defined. Recognition and appropriate treatment of these common pediatric

Persistence of an allergen in hair after glyceryl monothioglycolate-containing permanent wave solutions.

Glyceryl monothioglycolate, a reducing agent used in permanent waving solutions, is a recognized cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Because of an unexplained persistence of dermatitis in beauty shop clients after exposure to permanent wave solutions containing glyceryl monothioglycolate, we looked for the presence of this or a cross-reacting substance in permanent-waved hair as a possible source of continued exposure to the allergen. Seventeen subjects sensitive to glyceryl monothioglycolate underwent patch testing with hair samples collected before and at various times after a permanent wa

A five-year study of cosmetic reactions.

During 64 months (1977 to 1983), twelve dermatologists from various sections of the United States studied a total of 713 patients with cosmetic dermatitis out of an estimated total of 13,216 patients with contact dermatitis. The number of patients seen for all causes during this period was 281,100. An important finding was that half of the patients or physicians were unaware that a cosmetic was responsible for their dermatitis. Skin care products, hair preparations (including colors), and facial makeup were responsible for the majority of the reactions. The most important objective was identif

Clinical patterns of phytodermatitis.

Exposure to plants is very common, through leisure or professional activity. In addition, plant products and botanic extracts are increasingly present in the environment. Cutaneous adverse reactions to plants and their derivatives occur fairly frequently, and establishing the correct diagnosis is not always easy. The astute clinician relies on a detailed history and a careful skin examination to substantiate his opinion. This article reviews the characteristic clinical patterns of phyto- and phytophotodermatitis and some less common presentations.
