Two cases of segmental, small-intestinal lipomatosis are described. In both, the patients had crampy abdominal pain secondary to partial intestinal obstruction. A review of the literature uncovered reports of 16 similar cases, in some of which virtually the entire small intestine was involved. Diverticulosis and intussusception are associated lesions. Diagnosis may be made by an abnormal roentgenographic pattern. Provided the bowel is not so extensively involved that complete resection is impractical, surgical removal of the affected segment results in cure.

Since 1935 at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, 13 cases of carcinoid have been seen as incidental findings in the appendix, but carcinoids of the rectum have never previously been reported in childhood. The authors report a child with a rectal duplication in which this tumour was found. The rationale for local resection of the duplication with its contained carcinoid is understood in the light of the principles for treatment of intestinal carcinoids in general and carcinoids of the rectum in particular. Two years after operation the child is well without signs of local or systemic re

Five patients with benign oesophageal stricture are described who subsequently developed oesophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis. Stricture was due to reflux oesophagitis in three patients and to lye ingestion in two. The minimum time between diagnosis of stricture and recognition of pseudodiverticulosis was two years. Most authors regard chronic inflammation as the initiating cause of pseudodiverticulosis. Although stricture is common, it generally occurs as part of the disease process and has not been regarded as a cause of the disorder. In our patients it is suggested that chronic infla

The association of duodenal diverticula and pancreatitis is rare. Various types of such diverticula are reviewed, especially intra- and extraluminal Vaterian diverticula in which common and pancreatic duct terminate. The pathogenesis of the pancreatitis in case of interposed Vaterian diverticula is thought to be mechanical by means of the creation of a closed Vaterian pouch in which higher pressures produce reflux of bile and pancreatic enzymes. Two patients with this particular type of duodenal diverticula are presented.

A 58-year old patient with intramural pseudo-diverticulosis of the oesophagus was observed for three and a half years. The case is described and illustrated. The pathogenesis of the disease is discussed with reference to the literature. The radiological appearances permit a definite diagnosis. The oesophagus had a stricture at the level of the bifurcation of the trachea, but in addition there were multiple intramural, sharply demarkated mucosal herniations measuring 3 x 1 mm. These could be verified endoscopically. Histologically, non-specific oesophagitis was found.

Among 37,857 operations in a general surgical department (1965-1975), 205 interventions on the small intestine were necessary- enterotomies, oversuturing, amputations and resections. The operations are evaluated with regard to etiology, clinical aspects and operative technique.

Lemmel syndrome is a rare and misdiagnosed cause of obstructive jaundice due to a periampullary duodenal diverticulum (PAD) in the absence of choledocholithiasis or a tumor. PADs are extraluminal outpouchings of duodenal mucosa that develop within a radius of 2-3 cm from the ampulla of Vater. They are largely asymptomatic, but rarely they can cause acute abdominal pain and obstructive jaundice due to the extrinsic compression of the common bile duct or pancreatic duct. PADs are mostly asymptomatic, but complications can occur, such as hemorrhage, perforation, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, chol…
