Associations of household income and parental education with early childhood caries: the Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Although the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) has declined over the past few decades, it remains a significant public health concern in Japan. Socioeconomic disparities in ECC risk have been reported; however, the extent to which these disparities exist across different indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) and the degree to which early oral health practices help explain them remain unclear. This study evaluated the association between parental SES and ECC and examined the extent to which early oral health behaviors contributed to these associations. METHODS: We analy

Common questions and misconceptions about diets: what does the scientific evidence really show?

The study of diet and nutrition is often filled with numerous myths and misconceptions. A Google Scholar search of "diets health" yields over 4 million results. This review examines frequently asked questions about diets and dietary habits. These questions include the following: 1) Is a caloric surplus necessary for building skeletal muscle? 2) Is it possible to lose body mass or fat mass without caloric restriction? 3) Is intermittent fasting better than chronic caloric restriction for weight loss? 4) Are there sex differences in the response to fasting? 5) Can diet alone fulfill the macro an

Targeting octopamine synthesis genes LsTDC and LsTβH impairs reproduction, feeding and virus transmission in the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus.

BACKGROUND: Octopamine (OA) is an important biogenic amine in insects, and regulates multiple physiological and behavioral processes. Tyrosine decarboxylase (TDC) and tyramine β-hydroxylase (TβH) are critical enzymes in the biosynthesis of OA. The small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus is a major rice pest and causes serious damage by transmitting plant viruses, such as rice stripe virus (RSV). However, the functions of TDC and TβH remain largely unknown in rice planthoppers. RESULTS: We cloned LsTDC and LsTβH from L. striatellus. LsTDC was significantly enriched in the 4th instar nym

Affect-induction techniques and psychophysiological response in human studies of eating behavior. A systematic review of recent studies.

Understanding the mechanisms underlying eating behavior is essential for identifying factors involved in its regulation. This review systematizes evidence on affect-induction techniques, their associated physiological responses, and their impact on eating behavior. We searched experimental studies published between 2014 and 2026 in SciELO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that assessed physiological responses to laboratory-induced acute stress or negative affect during eating-related tasks. A total of 43 studies met inclusion criteria. Affect induction techniques included social stress parad

An analysis of diet sustainability among different dietary patterns in the Portuguese adult and elderly population.

PURPOSE: Dietary patterns influence human and environmental health. Shifts toward convenience and ready-to-eat ultra-processed foods have contributed to the rising prevalence of malnutrition, chronic disease, and ecological harm. This study examined the associations between dietary patterns and diet sustainability among Portuguese adults. METHODS: Data from 2287 individuals aged 18-84 years were obtained from the last National Food, Nutrition, and Physical Activity Survey (2015-2016). Three dietary patterns were identified based on food composition and processing: Traditional, Diet Concerns,

Does Poverty Explain All? A Path Analysis of Single Mothers' Dietary Behaviors in Japan.

Background/Objectives: In Japan, single mothers face a high risk of poverty and poorer dietary quality than partnered mothers; however, the pathways underlying these disparities remain unclear. This study examined whether economic status mediates the association between family structure and maternal dietary behaviors and whether intergenerational co-residence modifies these pathways. Methods: Using nationally representative repeated cross-sectional survey data from 2018 to 2022 (N = 1319 mothers), we conducted path analysis of dietary awareness and behaviors. Family structure was classified as

Emotions on the menu: Reflexive thematic analysis of emotional eating in academic context.

The experiences of seven academicians at a private university with emotional eating were examined. Data driven by face-to-face interviews and food diaries were analyzed by using reflexive thematic analysis via MAXQDA. Three overarching themes: (i) Feeding the tension: Stress-induced emotional eating, (ii) Treat or threat? Coping with emotional and social triggers, (iii) Tug of war-Comfort vs. control arose from in-depth interviews using reflective thematic analysis. The findings of the study highlight the importance of addressing work-related stressors, personal life pressures, and eating patt

Multidimensional body image and self-esteem: a latent profile analysis differentiating orthorexia nervosa and exercise addiction from disordered eating.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON), the obsessive preoccupation with healthy eating, and Exercise Addiction (EA), the behavioral addiction to exercise, are controversially discussed as potential mental disorders. The unclear distinction between these conditions and disordered eating, especially regarding restrictive eating and instrumental exercise behaviors, contributes to this debate. The objective of the study was to ascertain whether latent profiles can be identified that support the independence of ON and EA from disordered eating. It was hypothesized that ON profiles would be characteri

Exploring dietary patterns during school hours in Swedish adolescent student population, focusing on out-of-school eating and snacking: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Establishing healthy dietary habits during childhood and adolescence is essential, as these patterns often persist into adulthood and influence long-term health. In Sweden, school lunches play an important role in overall nutritional intake. However, among adolescents, school lunch participation may decrease, while purchasing food from nearby retailers becomes increasingly common. This study aims to investigate dietary patterns among adolescents aged 13-19 years in Stockholm, Sweden, during school hours, focusing on school lunch participation and snacking inside and around school.

Long-term associations between animal-source food consumption and breast and prostate cancer incidence based on cointegration and ARIMAX models.

Understanding whether and to what extent dietary habits influence the long-term incidence of hormone-sensitive cancers is undoubtedly a significant challenge. Conventional approaches, which are often limited to studies with short follow-up periods or methods that do not consider lag times, risk producing spurious associations and consequently lead to weak conclusions. In this study, we analyzed exceptionally long Italian national time series (1961–2020 for meat and dairy consumption; 1984–2020 for cancer incidence) to investigate the association between diet and the development of breast and p

Determinants of acute weight gain during regional conflict among individuals with overweight and obesity receiving targeted multidisciplinary care.

PURPOSE: People living with obesity are susceptible to weight gain during periods of extreme stress. Identifying modifiable risk factors is crucial in regions affected by frequent conflict. METHODS: We therefore sent a survey to patients followed in a weight management clinic shortly after the 2023 onset of the Israel-Hamas war. RESULTS: Responses (n = 285) were collected for analysis a median of 58 days (IQR 48-58) after the conflict erupted and compared between subjects who did and did not experience acute, significant weight gain (≥ 3%). Median age was 57 (IQR 46-67) and 66.5% were female

The impact of food advertising on children's daily energy intake: does it differ by advertising content, format, or participant characteristics? A cross-over randomised controlled trial.

Exposure to audiovisual advertising for unhealthy food products increases children's immediate food consumption and effects may persist to subsequent meals. The impacts of food advertising that is brand-only or in other formats is unknown. This study aimed to quantify the impact of unhealthy food advertising on children's immediate and later intake; and assess differences in impacts for different advertisement content (brand-only vs. product), format (audiovisual vs. visual vs. audio vs. static), or sociodemographic characteristics. A pre-registered cross-over randomised controlled trial was c
