BACKGROUND: It is unclear if pediatric patients with a supracondylar humeral fracture and isolated anterior interossous nerve injury require urgent treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter study of 4409 patients with operatively treated supracondylar humeral fractures was conducted. Exclusion criteria were additional nerve injuries other than the anterior interosseous nerve, any sensory changes, pulselessness, ipsilateral forearm fractures, open fractures, less than two months of follow-up, or pathological fractures.

A fracture in childhood is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD), but it is debated whether a fracture at growth also predicts low BMD in young adulthood. The purpose of this work was to gender-specifically evaluate whether children with a fracture are at increased risk of low BMD in young adulthood. BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education-mandated 80-hour work week has led many teaching hospitals to find adequate replacements for residents. In addition, the subspecialty of pediatric orthopaedics is currently experiencing a workforce shortage. At the authors' institution, Level I emergency department and hospital on-call duties alternate between orthopaedic residents and orthopaedic-specific nurse practitioners. There are no studies looking at the quality of care rendered in the pediatric orthopaedic setting by physician extenders.
