BACKGROUND: Femoral neck fractures are notorious for complications like avascular necrosis and nonunion. In developing countries, various factors such as illiteracy, low socioeconomic status, ignorance are responsible for the delay in surgery. Neglected fracture neck femur always poses a formidable challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of triple muscle pedicle bone grafting using sartorius, tensor fasciae latae and part of gluteus medius in neglected femoral neck fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study with medical record of 50 patients, who w

Supracondylar fractures are the most common fractures in the area of elbow in children. The purpose of this study was to review and analyze the treatment patterns of supracondylar humerus fractures in childhood. There were 93 children with supracondylar humerus fractures treated in the Department of Pediatric Orthopedics within the period from March 2000 till November 2002. Ninety fractures were extension-type injuries, 3 were flexion injuries, these were not included in our study. Supracondylar humerus fractures were classified according to Gartland classification. Type III fractures were fou

To evaluate the efficacy of external fixators(EFs) for management of open fractures of tibia and fibula in patients with haemophilia A. EFs are commonly used in the clinical management of infected or open fractures when internal fixation is contraindicated and plaster immobilization is inadequate. However, EFs have not been frequently used for these indications in haemophilic patients for fear of pin tract infection and bleeding. This is a retrospective therapeutic study. We describe the use of EF (Orthofix uniplanar fixators) in five patients (mean age: 31.4 years; range: 10-52) with haemophi

A ten year retrospective review of 259 zygoma fractures is presented to highlight changes in epidemiology and treatment. Motor vehicle-related trauma resulted in a majority of the injuries (80.6%), with a high incidence of multiple facial fractures (43.2%). The number of zygomatic and other facial fractures decreased over the duration of the study (by 50.0% and 20.1%, respectively, p < 0.05), perhaps reflecting lowered speed limits and the increased use of seat belts. The proportion of fractures receiving open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) remained relatively constant (46.3%). At pres

Ninety-two intra-articular ankle fractures were randomly selected for either open reduction and internal fixation or closed reduction and plaster cast. The patients were followed for an average of seven years. The initial course was more favorable in surgically reduced fractures. However, follow-up examinations showed little difference in results between the two forms of treatment.

Internal fixation devices made of nickel-titanium (NiTi) staples have the advantage of producing compressive stress at the fracture site due to their unique shape memory effect and superelasticity. In the present study, a comparison was made between two commercial NiTi staples of the same size but with different bridge configurations, used for scaphoid fracture fixation. The staple and scaphoid anatomical configurations were modeled using SolidWorks, while ABAQUS software was used to analyze the stress and displacement caused by staples and distributed in the scaphoid waist. In the staple with

Acetabular fractures increase the risk of posttraumatic arthritis and thus the risk of total hip arthroplasty (THA). We previously presented the ten-year results of THA performed for posttraumatic arthritis after an acetabular fracture; we now present the twenty-year outcomes. The original publication included sixty-six patients who underwent THA between 1970 and 1993 for posttraumatic arthritis after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of an acetabular fracture. Clinical outcomes, implant survivorship, radiographic results, and complications were evaluated. A total of thirty-six patie

Seventy-nine nonconsecutive patients with subtrochanteric femur fractures were divided into three groups based on the method of fracture fixation. Group I consisted of 21 patients treated with a Zickel nail, Group II comprised 25 patients treated with a 95 degrees blade plate, and Group III included 33 patients treated with an interlocking nail. All patients in Group I and Group II had open reduction and internal fixation of their fractures. Ninety-four percent of the patients in Group III were treated by closed intramedullary nailing. The average operating times for Groups I, II, and III were

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic reference levels are radiation dose levels in medical radiodiagnostic practices for typical examinations for groups of standard-sized individuals for broadly defined types of equipment. This study aimed to contribute to national diagnostic reference levels for common hand and wrist procedures using mini C-arm fluoroscopy. Small joint and digital fracture procedure diagnostic reference levels have not been reported in significant numbers previously with procedure-level stratification.
METHODS: Data were collected from fluoroscopy logbooks and were cross-referenced agains

INTRODUCTION: Distal fibula fractures are common orthopaedic injuries that often require open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) to anatomically reduce the fracture and minimize the risk of posttraumatic arthritis. In certain clinical situations, stouter fixation may be advantageous to decrease the risk of fixation failure. In this study, the authors report on 12 patients who underwent distal fibula ORIF with 2 one-third tubular plates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients who underwent distal fibula ORIF with 2 one-third tubular plates were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical an

CASE: A 16-year-old girl presented to the emergency department after a 6-foot fall while skiing. The patient presented with left-sided pelvic pain and acute blood loss anemia. She was diagnosed with pelvic ring fracture (LC-2) and underwent open reduction internal fixation using a trans-sacral trans-iliac (TSTI) screw. She initially recovered but reported chronic right-sided back pain 4 years later. After hardware removal, she remained symptom-free for 1 year.
CONCLUSION: Very few cases report contralateral pain associated with TSTI screws penetrating the opposite SI joint. This report highli

Pilon fractures of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint are challenging injuries that can lead to arthritis, limited motion, and pain. Internal fixation is often difficult owing to comminution and inadequate bony support. External fixation requires a compliant patient and may result in pin-track infection, stiffness, and malunion. In this report, I describe a simple surgical technique of immediate bridge plating of the PIP joint with bone grafting followed by plate removal and joint release. This approach maintains the alignment, restores the articular congruity without the risk of pin-tra

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the biomechanical performance of the 7.3 mm fully threaded off-axis screw (7.3-FTOS) configuration in stabilizing vertical femoral neck fractures (FNSs), comparing its effectiveness with other fixation methods.
METHODS: A vertical FNF model with an 80° Pauwels angle was simulated and stabilized using four internal fixation constructs: Three inverted cannulated compression screws (ICCS), 7.3 mm partially threaded off-axis screw (7.3-PTOS), 4.5 mm fully threaded off-axis screw (4.5-FTOS), and 7.3-FTOS. The fracture fixation models were developed, refined, and

INTRODUCTION: Fracture fixation in post-polio residual paralysis is technically demanding due to dysplastic proximal femoral anatomy, osteopenia, and distorted trochanteric morphology. Standard cephalomedullary nailing may be impossible when the medullary canal is narrow, or the entry point is malpositioned.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old man with childhood poliomyelitis and complete paralysis of the right leg sustained an AO 31-A1.2 pertrochanteric fracture. Radiographs revealed coxa valga and a markedly narrow canal, precluding safe cephalomedullary nailing. Closed reduction on a traction table
