Redistributional Hypothermia Prevention by Prewarming with Forced-Air: Exploratory, Open, Randomized, Clinical Trial of Efficacy.

Avoiding redistributional hypothermia that decreases core temperature by 0.5-1.5°C within the 1st hour of surgery is difficult. The efficacy of prewarming using a forced-air warming (FAW) device with a lower-body blanket on redistribution hypothermia during epidural procedures have not been investigated. After ethics approval, 113 patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia were enrolled. Intervention (prewarming) group patients who were warmed from operating room entry, including during epidural anesthesia, was compared with the control

The manufacturing procedure of 3D printed models for endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery is usually difficult and risky. With limited sources of cadaveric skulls, traditional methods of using virtual images to study the surgery are difficult for neurosurgeons and students because the surgery requires spatial imagination and good understanding of the patient's conditions as well as practical experience. The three-dimensional (3D) printing technique has played an important role in clinical medicine due to its advantages of low cost, high-efficiency and customization. OBJECTIVE: CT images are used as the source data

[Case report of re-expansion pulmonary edema in a patient with anorexia nervosa after removal of a huge ovarian tumor].

We described a case of 19-year-old female who developed re-expansion pulmonary edema (RPE) after removal of a huge ovarian tumor. Altered lung volume after the surgery was observed by chest X-ray. Preoperatively, the lung was highly compressed by the tumor. Patient was intubated under general anesthesia and was ventilated by pressure controlled mode with only 5 cmH2O of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). P/F ratio was changed from 163 to 444 after removal of the tumor. At the end of the surgery, P/F ratio decreased to 263 with yellow frothy sputum in the endotracheal tube and we diagnose

Colorectal cancer surgery: what is evidence based and how should we do it?

Evidence-based medicine was first defined by Sackett as 'the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of the current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients'. This requires good quality studies with a high level of proof. However, these studies are often lacking in colorectal surgery. Nevertheless, the topics on which there is general agreement will be discussed. There is now good evidence that the laparoscopic approach is at least equivalent in oncological terms to the conventional open approach in colonic surgery. The question, however, remains unanswered for

Resolving postoperative neuroinflammation and cognitive decline.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive decline accompanies acute illness and surgery, especially in the elderly. Surgery engages the innate immune system that launches a systemic inflammatory response that, if unchecked, can cause multiple organ dysfunction. We sought to understand the mechanisms whereby the brain is targeted by the inflammatory response and how this can be resolved. METHODS: C57BL/6J, Ccr2(RFP/+)Cx3cr1(GFP/+), Ikk(F/F) mice and LysM-Cre/Ikk(F/F) mice underwent stabilized tibial fracture operation under analgesia and general anesthesia. Separate cohorts of mice were tested for systemic and hip

Vesicoureteral reflux: surgical and endoscopic treatment.

The optimal management of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is quite controversial. For many years, only antibiotic prophylaxis and open surgery were considered possible options. Since the first descriptions in the early 1980s, endoscopic treatment (ET) has gained popularity and is now considered a valid alternative both to open surgery and antibiotic prophylaxis. Many surgical antireflux techniques have been described in the past 50 years. The general principle of reflux surgery, usually defined as ureteric reimplantation, is elongation of the submucosal ureteral tunnel with creation of a flap-valv

[Treatment of ureteral lesions during gynecologic surgery].

Surgery of gynecologic area and of pelvic cavity in general is a risk situation for ureteral injury. The incidence of these injuries is about 1% and may be considered as "unavoidable", irrespective of the surgical approach which could be either abdominal, vaginal or laparoscopic. In this study, 37 patients who had undergone a previous gynecological surgery were assessed for 38 ureteral units. Ureteral injury was identified at the surgical table in 2 patients who were treated successfully during the same surgical session with an end-to-end anastomosis. In 8 patients, a double-J ureteral stent w
