Transoral robotic resection of unusual spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma of the larynx.

Spindle cell/pleomorphic lipoma (SC/PL) is a subcutaneous mass usually localised on nape, shoulder or upper back. It is a benign lipogenic tumour composed of primitive CD34-positive spindle cells, floret-like multinucleated giant cells and mature adipocytes. Complete surgical excision is the optimal treatment. This unusual tumour in the larynx has only been reported in the medical literature once and was treated surgically by open approach. Actually, transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is most suitable because provides tridimensional magnified view plus a greater mobility with instruments, allowi…

Tuberculous peritonitis mimicking peritonitis carcinomatosis: a case report.

UNLABELLED: A 13-year-old girl presented with non-specific symptoms of peritonitis, low grade fever and missed her normal menses. Computed tomography of her abdomen and pelvic cavity showed omental cake and a generalised thickened peritoneum. An elevated serum cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) level of 1248.5 U/ml was also noted and a diagnosis of peritonitis carcinomatosis was first suspected. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed multiple tubercles over the whole peritoneum and the pathology report described granulomatous nodules with giant cells and epithelioid cells. Culture of the ascitic fluid revea…

Pyogenic granuloma of the cornea: report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic granulomas are ulcerated vascular proliferations, often accompanied by inflammatory infiltrates, which rarely affect the eye. Only few reports on pyogenic granulomas of the cornea have been presented. METHODS: The enucleated globe containing the corneal tumor was examined histopathologically, and special immunohistochemical stains were performed. RESULTS: The lesion had a yellowish appearance with marked vascularization. The inflammatory infiltrate was mainly composed of mononuclear cells, with no multinucleated giant cells, and was located anterior to Bowman's layer, le…

Enhancement of fluorescent antibody staining of viral antigens in formalin-fixed tissues by trypsin digestion.

The staining of viral antigens present in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues by fluorescent antibodies is markedly enhanced by trypsin digestion. When the trypsin digestion method was used to detect viral antigens present in hamster brain following experimental infection with measles virus, the results were comparable to those obtained with acetone-fixed, freshly frozen tissues that had been sectioned with a cryostat. Measles antigens were readily identified in brain cells from a patient with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis and in lung and liver tissue from a patient with acute gian

Everolimus.

Everolimus (RAD001, Afinitor®) is an oral protein kinase inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) serine/threonine kinase signal transduction pathway. The mTOR pathway regulates cell growth, proliferation, and survival and is frequently deregulated in cancer. Everolimus has been approved by the FDA and the EMA for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) associated with tuberous sclerosis (TSC), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNET), in combination with exemestane in advanced hormone-receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative br

NFKB and NFKBI polymorphisms in relation to susceptibility of tumour and other diseases.

Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) is responsible for the expression by regulating many genes for immune response, cell adhesion, differentiation, proliferation, angiogenesis and apoptosis. The function of NF-kappaB is inhibited by binding to NF-kappaB inhibitor (IkappaB), and imbalance of NF-kappaB and IkappaB has been associated with development of many diseases, including tumours. In this review, we focus on polymorphisms of the NFKB and NFKBI genes in relation to development of common inflammatory diseases including ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), rheumatoid arthritis, system

Evaluation of osteonectin as a diagnostic marker of osteogenic bone tumors.

Osteonectin (ON), a 32,000-kd glycoprotein involved in the early steps of mineralization of skeletal tissue, is a recognized differentiation marker of normal osteogenic cells. The expression of ON was evaluated in vitro and in tissue sections by the polyclonal antibody bON II. In different cell cultures immunocytochemistry and molecular biology displayed a nonspecific reaction for the antibody, which showed itself to be useless for the in vitro identification of cells of the osteoblastic lineage. The diagnostic use of bON II antibody was investigated by immunohistochemistry on a series of oste

Application of custom-made joint prostheses in wrist.

The wrist joint is a highly mobile functional joint. Wrist conditions including traumatic and degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and giant cell tumors of the distal radius, cause significant pain and mobility impairment. In joint surgery, the decision to use joint prostheses to reconstruct joint function is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the prosthesis (Mok et al., 2016). However, traditional implants have limitations such as shape mismatch, inadequate implant-bone interface strength which causes loosening, and poor bone ingrowth (Zhang et al., 2014).

A Rare Case of Clinically Isolated Aortitis in a 51-Year-Old Male with Infrarenal Aorta Involvement.

Aortitis can be broadly classified into infectious and non-infectious. Infectious causes include tuberculosis, salmonella and syphilis where as noninfectious causes include rheumatological diseases such as giant cell arteritis, Takayasu arteritis and antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) vasculitides. Clinically isolated aortitis refers to inflammation of the aorta without infectious or systemic causes. Most cases of aortitis involve the aortic root, thoracic aorta and ascending aorta. We present a rare case of clinically isolated aortitis in a 51-year-old male with infrarenal aortic in

[A giant malignant melanoma of the palpebral conjunctiva: a case report].

An 81-year-old female patient experienced a rapid increase in the volume of a rice-sized black mass on the left eye over a period of six months. The mass extended out of the eye and exhibited surface erosion with accompanying hemorrhage. Following a live tissue examination and histopathology after orbital exenteration under general anesthesia, the diagnosis of a giant malignant palpebral conjunctival melanoma of the spindle cell subtype was confirmed. The patient refused to undergo local radiation therapy or systemic chemotherapy and died from the disease six months later.

Calcified Chondroid Mesenchymal Neoplasms.

Calcified chondroid mesenchymal neoplasms (CCMN) represent a morphologic spectrum of related tumors. Historically, chondroid matrix or chondroblastoma-like features have been described in soft tissue chondroma, tenosynovial giant cell tumors (especially of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region), and in a subset of tophaceous pseudogout. Recently, these tumors have been found to share FN1-receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) fusions. This review discusses the clinical, morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular genetic features of CCMN. The distinction from morphologic mimics is also discusse

A "Leopard Man" Aspect on 18 F-FDG PET/CT Revealing a VEXAS Syndrome.

VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome is an adult-onset autoinflammatory disease caused by somatic UBA1 mutations first described in 2020. Most of these patients met clinical criteria for an inflammatory syndrome (relapsing polychondritis, Sweet syndrome, polyarteritis nodosa, or giant-cell arteritis) or a hematologic condition (myelodysplastic syndrome or multiple myeloma) or both. We described here an FDG PET/CT "leopard man" appearance, with abnormal marrow recruitment the findings, in a 70-year-old man diagnosed with a VEXAS syndrome.

[18F-FDG-PET/CT AS A TOOL FOR DIAGNOSIS AND FOLLOW-UP OF INFLAMMATORY DISEASES OF LARGE BLOOD VESSELS].

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-Positron Emission Tomography (PET) / Computed Tomography (FDG-PET/CT) is a well-established functional-anatomical imaging technique mostly used in oncology. In addition, it was found to have an important role in the diagnosis and follow-up of large vessel vasculitis mainly when combined with computed tomography angiography. Large vessel vasculitis is a disease mainly affecting large blood vessels and has two major groups: Takayasu arteritis (TA) and Giant cell arteritis (GCA). GCA is usually accompanied by polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).
