Salivary infectious agents and periodontal disease status.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The potential of salivary microorganisms to diagnose periodontal disease and to guide periodontal treatment is a research topic of current interest. This study aimed to determine whether the salivary counts of periodontopathic microbes correlated with the periodontal pocket counts of the same infectious agents, and whether the salivary counts of the test infectious agents could distinguish among individuals with periodontal health and various types of periodontal disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 150 systemically healthy adults, of whom 37 were perio

A 2-year study of adjunctive minocycline-HCl in Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans-associated periodontitis.

To study the effects of a step-wise treatment regimen on Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans-(Aa) associated periodontitis, 4 clusters among 33 patients harboring the organism were followed during successive periods of systemic minocycline plus mechanical debridement and minocycline plus modified Widman flap treatment. Localized periodontitis was found in 2 clusters, one with 7 localized juvenile periodontitis patients and a 24-year old male with localized destruction and extremely low plaque levels (LJP), and the other consisting of 10 patients with plaque and gingivitis and a wider age rang

Bacteroides gingivalis-specific serum IgG and IgA subclass antibodies in periodontal diseases.

The level of serum IgM, IgG and IgA antibodies including IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgA1 and IgA2 subclass-specific antibodies to Bacteroides (Porphyromonas) gingivalis fimbriae and to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were analysed in patients with different forms of periodontal disease (PD) and control subjects by ELISA. Among PD subjects, sera obtained from adult periodontitis (AP), rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and gingivitis contained high titres of fimbriae-specific IgG antibodies (7500-15,000 ELISA units) followed by IgA (90-700 units) and IgM (30-90 units). In contrast, sera from localiz

[The relationship between the state of the microbiota and oral hygiene, their impact on human health (literature review)].

The oral microbiota plays an important role in maintaining dental and systemic health. The interaction between the oral and gut microbiota highlights the bidirectional connection between oral health and systemic health, where disturbances in one micro-ecosystem can spill over into the other. An imbalance leading to oral dysbiosis can accelerate a range of oral diseases, such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis, and oral candidiasis and also have profound impacts on overall health, including gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and endocrine imbalanc

Supernumerary teeth in a patient with Turner syndrome: An unusual finding.

AIMS: Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder associated with abnormalities of the X-chromosome, occurring in about 1 in 2000 to 1 in 3000 live-born girls. We present a case of a 14-year-old girl with TS, who was referred to our outpatient clinic in 2016 because of an ectopic eruption. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dental clinical examination and radiographic investigation revealed eight supernumerary teeth, short roots, enamel hypoplasia, increased overjet, rotation and displacement of teeth, moderate gingivitis and morphological alteration of the upper right central incisor. Dental treatment incl

Antibiotic Prescribing for Oro-Facial Infections in the Paediatric Outpatient: A Review.

There are many reports on the complications associated with antibiotics abuse during the treatment of paediatric patients, particularly those related to antimicrobial resistance. The dental profession is no exception; there is growing evidence that dental practitioners are misusing antibiotics in the treatment of their paediatric patients. This review is directed to dental practitioners who provide oral healthcare to children. It is also directed to medical practitioners, particularly those working in emergency departments and encountering children with acute orofacial infections. A systematic

[Oral allergies].

Oral allergies to dental materials are a growing problem and remain poorly diagnosed by health professionals. The complaints of patients with oral allergy are various and include sensations of burning or stinging of the oral mucosa, sensations of dryness of the oral cavity, or general symptoms such as headache, dyspepsia, asthenia, arthralgia, and myalgia. Signs suggestive of oral allergy include erythema, edema, purpuric patches on the palate, ulcerations of the oral mucosa (canker sore), gingivitis, glossitis mimicking geographic tongue, angular cheilitis, peri-oral eczema or the presence of

Thalassemia review: features, dental considerations and management.

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that involves abnormal haemoglobin formation. The two main categories of thalassemia are alpha and beta thalassemia that are then divided into further subcategories. While some mild forms of thalassemia might even go unnoticed and only cause mild anaemia and iron deficiency problems in patients, other more severe forms of thalassemia can even result in death. Individuals with thalassemia can get treatment according to the level of severity of their condition. The main oral manifestations of thalassemia are Class II malocclusion, maxillary protrusion, high cari

Pharmacokinetics in the oral cavity: fluoride and other active ingredients.

Modern commercial toothpastes contain therapeutic ingredients to combat various oral conditions, for example, caries, gingivitis, calculus and tooth stain. The efficient delivery and retention of such ingredients in the mouth is essential for good performance. The aim of this chapter is to review the literature on the oral pharmacokinetics of, primarily, fluoride but also other active ingredients, mainly anti-plaque agents. Elevated levels of fluoride have been found in saliva, plaque and the oral soft tissues after use of fluoridated toothpaste, which persist at potentially active concentrati

Oral findings and dental treatment in a patient with Dandy-Walker syndrome: a case report.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is congenital disease characterized by hypoplasia of the cerebellum, the formation of cysts that communicate with the fourth ventricle of the posterior cranial fossa, and hydrocephalus. In addition to various other complications, cleft lip/palate, facial retrognathia, a high-arched palate, and maldentition occur at an increased frequency in patients with DWS. However, few studies have reported the dental manifestations of DWS. Herein, we report the clinical manifestations, oral findings, and dental management of a DWS patient who was treated under general anesthesia

Are alcohol containing mouthwashes safe?

Alcohol (ethanol) is a constituent of many proprietary mouthwashes. Some studies have shown that regular use of such mouthwashes can increase the risk of developing oral cancer. Recently, the evidence has been reviewed by two separate authors. The conclusions from these reviews are conflicting. In this paper, we reconsider the epidemiological evidence linking alcohol containing mouthwashes with an increased risk of oral cancer. The evidence is considered in term of sample size, strength of association, confounding variables and data collection. In addition, clinical studies comparing alcohol v

Management of erythema multiforme associated with recurrent herpes infection: a case report.

Erythema multiforme is an acute mucocutaneous disorder, characterized by varying degrees of blistering and ulceration. We report a case of recurrent herpes-associated erythema multiforme managed with prophylactic acyclovir. An 11-year-old boy had lesions in the oral cavity and lips, which had been diagnosed as erythema multiforme minor. Four months later, the patient had desquamative gingivitis with erythematous lesions and necrotic areas in the skin. This episode was not related to drug intake, which suggests that the erythema multiforme was a result of herpetic infection. This hypothesis was

[State of the mouth cavity in patients with inflammatory intestinal diseases].

The article presents the results of the dental examination of 75 patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease with mild and medium-to-severe clinical course. Absolutely all of the patients had intensive dental caries and inflammatory diseases of the paradontium that exceeded the average statistical level for Moscow both in terms of incidence and severity. As many as 20-60% of patients suffering from inflammatory intestinal diseases also had such disorders of the mouth cavity mucous membrane as angular cheilitis, labial fissures, glossitis or aphthous stomatitis. Papillon-Lefevre syndrome: a case report.

We report the first diagnosed case of Papillon-Lefevre syndrome in Thailand. The patient is the youngest child of consanguinous parents, and she has had symmetrical hyperkeratotic plaques on both plantar surfaces since birth with a history of chronic gingivitis, periodontitis, and premature loss of primary dentition. The histologic study revealed compact hyperkeratosis with epidermal acanthosis. Radiologic studies of the skull were normal. The radiographic panoramic view of the oral cavity revealed generalized severe vertical and horizontal alveolar bone loss. The immunologic analysis of polym

Oral manifestations related to immunosuppression degree in HIV-positive children.

Oral manifestations often found in HIV-infected children are frequently the first clinical sign of the infection. This article aims to report the prevalence of oral manifestations in soft tissues and their relationship with the degree of immunosuppression in 80 HIV-infected patients (average age 6.30 +/- 3.32 years old) at the IPPMG-UFRJ. Thirty children (38%) presented some type of oral lesion and the percentage of CD4 was lower than that found in lesion-free children (p < 0.05); 22.5% presented candidiasis, 17.5% gingivitis, 8.8% enlargement of parotids, 1.3% herpes simplex and 1.3% hairy le

The history of oral hygiene products: how far have we come in 6000 years?

How far have we come in the past six millennia? Numerous dental epidemiological studies indicate that people are keeping their teeth longer than over before in this century. Agents and devices have evolved, by custom and by research, to enable people, with professional assistance, to maintain good oral health. Our diets, our lifestyles and our professional colleagues have "conspired" as pathogenic influences on oral health. The profession has met the challenge by developing and perfecting a myriad of devices and agents to thwart these pathogenic factors. Patient motivation and professional acc

Presentation and antimicrobial treatment of acute orofacial infections in general dental practice.

Information on the presentation of orofacial infections and the use of antimicrobial agents in general dental practice in the United Kingdom was obtained using a postal questionnaire. Six hundred dentists were randomly selected and a total of 340 replies were received, giving a response rate of 57%. The dental practitioners estimated that acute infection was present in only a minority (approximately 5%) of patients. A total of seven different antibiotics were prescribed, in a variety of regimens, for the treatment of bacterial infection. However, the majority of dentists (46-62%) preferred a 5
