[Study on sepsis in the elderly at Nagoyashi-Koseiin Geriatric Hospital].

A study based on clinical analysis was conducted regarding the 125 episodes in the elderly 112 patients of sepsis who were 70 (average 83.8 +/- 7.5) years old at Nagoyashi-Koseiin Geriatric Hospital from 1985 through 1994. 1) The backgrounds of the elderly patients with sepsis were as follows: bedridden (72.8%), urinary catheter in place (61.2%), central venous catheter in place (48.8%), and prior antibiotic use (40.8%). All patients had an underlying disease. 2) Organisms isolated were Escherichia coli (21.2%), Staphylococcus aureus (18.4%); Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) (17.4%) and

The effect of clindamycin on the microbiota associated with refractory periodontitis.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of clindamycin hydrochloride, as an adjunct to scaling, on the microbiota associated with refractory periodontitis and to elucidate the probable causative bacteria associated with the disease. Microbial samples were collected from a subset of 9 patients with severe adult periodontitis who had not responded to conventional treatment modalities including the use of tetracycline and other antibiotics. Microbial samples were collected from a relatively deep site determined to be actively losing attachment and a comparably deep, but quie

Fusobacterium nucleatum - Friend or foe?

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is one of the most abundant Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, part of the gut, and oral commensal flora, generally found in human dental plaque. Its presence could be associated with various human diseases, including, e.g., periodontal, angina, lung and gynecological abscesses. This bacteria can enter the blood circulation as a result of periodontal infection. It was proven that F. nucleatum migrates from its primary site of colonization in the oral cavity to other parts of the body. It could cause numerous diseases, including cancers. On the other hand,

Sulfonium, an Underestimated Moiety for Structural Modification, Alters the Antibacterial Profile of Vancomycin Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria.

In the antibiotics arsenal, vancomycin is a last resort for the treatment of intractable infections. However, this situation is under threat because of the increasing appearance of vancomycin-resistant bacteria (VRB). Herein, we report a series of novel vancomycin derivatives carrying a sulfonium moiety. The sulfonium-vancomycin derivatives exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity against VRB both in vitro and in vivo. These derivatives also exhibited activity against some Gram-negative bacteria. The sulfonium modification enhanced the interaction of vancomycin with the bacterial cell membran…

Antibiotic resistance rates in causative agents of infections in diabetic patients: rising concerns.

The vicious cycle is that hyperglycemia (≥11.1 mmol/l) or other diabetes-associated factors facilitate or worsen the development of infections and vice versa, the infections deteriorate the glycemic control of the patients. Diabetic patients are prone to some infections, infection recurrences and poor outcomes. Immunocompromised state and frequent antibiotic use are associated with antibiotic resistance of the bacterial pathogens, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (in some studies), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomon…

Anaerobic degradation of phenol by pure cultures of newly isolated denitrifying pseudomonads.

From various oxic or anoxic habitats several strains of bacteria were isolated which in the absence of molecular oxygen oxidized phenol to CO2 with nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor. All strains grew in defined mineral salts medium; two of them were further characterized. The bacteria were facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative rods; metabolism was strictly oxidative with molecular oxygen, nitrate, or nitrite as electron acceptor. The isolates were tentatively identified as pseudomonads. Besides phenol many other benzene derivatives like cresols or aromatic acids were anaerobically oxid

Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern and Bacterial Spectrum Among Patients with External Eye Infections at Menelik II Referral Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Eye infections can cause loss or impairment of visual function and can lead to severe impairment. Bacteria are the most common pathogens that affect the structure of the eye. As a result, quick identification of the causative agents and testing of their medication susceptibility are essential for effective treatment of eye infections. This study was intended for determining the extent of bacterial isolates from external eye infections (EEIs) and their susceptibility to antibiotics. METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending Menelik II Re

Organism- and Mortality-Specific Cardiorespiratory Patterns in Late-Onset Neonatal Sepsis: A Four-Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Study of Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

Late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants varies in severity from mild to fatal and often presents with cardiorespiratory instability. We hypothesized that heart rate (HR) and systemic oxygenation (SpO2) patterns would differ based on pathogen type and mortality. We analyzed HR and SpO2 changes before LOS diagnosis for Gram-negative, Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, and other Gram-positive bacteria (GN, CONS, OGP) and compared survivors and nonsurvivors. Using continuous every-2-second vital sign data from 365 VLBW infants in four neonatal intensive care

The zeamine antibiotics affect the integrity of bacterial membranes.

The zeamines (zeamine, zeamine I, and zeamine II) constitute an unusual class of cationic polyamine-polyketide-nonribosomal peptide antibiotics produced by Serratia plymuthica RVH1. They exhibit potent bactericidal activity, killing a broad range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including multidrug-resistant pathogens. Examination of their specific mode of action and molecular target revealed that the zeamines affect the integrity of cell membranes. The zeamines provoke rapid release of carboxyfluorescein from unilamellar vesicles with different phospholipid compositions, demonstra

Combating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections.

INTRODUCTION: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections, especially those caused by Gram-negative pathogens, have emerged as one of the world's greatest health threats. The development of novel antibiotics to treat MDR Gram-negative bacteria has, however, stagnated over the last half century. AREAS COVERED: This review provides an overview of recent R&D activities in the search for novel antibiotics against MDR Gram-negatives. It provides emphasis in three key areas. First, the article looks at new analogs of existing antibiotic molecules such as β-lactams, tetracyclines, and aminoglycos…

Determining the core bacterial and fungal genera in table olive fermentations.

Table olives are among the most ancient and important fermented foods of the Mediterranean basin. Their production is still strongly related to traditional practices, and the lack of thermal treatments, the reliance on natural contamination and selective factors (NaCl, pH, occurrence of phenolics, etc.) determine the dynamics of the microbial community. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and yeasts have a pivotal role in table olive microbial communities, but several halophilic and alkalophilic microorganisms may also contribute, positively or negatively, to the quality and safety of this fermented ve
