Ophthalmia nodosa caused by casual handling of a tarantula.

PURPOSE: To present the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of ophthalmia nodosa secondary to tarantula hairs. METHODS: We present a case of a 28-year-old male with a one-week history of skin rash followed by ocular irritation, and blurring of vision after handling a Chilean rose tarantula. A Medline-guided literature search was performed to review the current and historical knowledge of ophthalmia nodosa. The clinical presentation and therapeutic options in ophthalmia nodosa were reviewed. RESULTS: Ophthalmia nodosa is a granulomatous, nodular reaction to vegetable or insect hairs includi…

Electrolysis: observations from 13 years and 140,000 hours of experience.

Electrolysis has been performed since 1875. Electrolysis satisfactorily removes hair from women with static hair growth, but women with hirsutism often require concomitant management of their hormonal problems. We have found the blend method to be the most effective modality for permanent hair removal. Attention must be given to proper electrolysis technique, including accurate needle insertion and appropriate intensities and duration. Scarring does not occur with properly performed electrolysis. Hair is not an electrical conductor and electronic tweezers do not result in permanent hair remova…

Histopathological Evidence of Occipital Involvement in Male Androgenetic Alopecia.

Background: The occipital region of the scalp is generally accepted as an unaffected area of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) for both genders. However, evidence of AGA involving the occipital scalp has been demonstrated in women; meanwhile, it is unclear whether occipital involvement also occurs in men. Objective: We aimed to determine if there is occipital involvement in men with AGA. Methods: This case-control study compared hair counts of scalp biopsy specimens from the occipital region of 82 men with Hamilton-Norwood III-VII and 82 unaffected men. Results: The mean ages of men with AGA and con…

Minimal Erythema Dose Determination in Holstein Friesian Cattle.

Cattle on pasture are continuously exposed to solar UV radiation, which has been associated with biological effects such as sunburn, photosensitization, squamous cell carcinoma, and cutaneous vitamin D3 production. The minimal erythema dose (MED) required to produce first-degree sunburn (erythema) is poorly researched in cattle. Since cattle are naturally covered with dense hair coats, the MED is influenced by the UV protection offered by the hair. The objective of this study was to determine the MED on intact-hair-covered (MED-H) and shaved white skin (MED-S) of Holstein Friesian cattle. Twen…

Rare oto-tricho-tussia/tinnitus: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Oto-tricho is associated with the symptoms of gag reflex and non-neuropathic tinnitus, which can be treated by removing the hair and its follicle. ABSTRACT: Oto-tricho refers to a disorder of hair growth in the tympanic membrane (TM). In its early stages, it can manifest as symptoms such as tinnitus, chronic pain, cough, and nausea. If left untreated, it can potentially lead to tympanosclerosis, TM micro-perforation, and hearing loss. In this report, we present a case study of a 33-year-old male with hair and follicle growth observed on the left TM. Over the course of th…

Kerion Celsi due to Microsporum canis in an Adult Woman, Treated Successfully with Fosravuconazole.

A 64-year-old woman presented with a fist-sized, severely painful lesion with scales, crusts, pustules, erythema with subcutaneous abscess, and hair loss on the left temporal region. Direct microscopic examination revealed a large number of spores around the hair, which indicated ectothrix hair invasion, and some hyphae were also found. Histopathological examination showed significant inflammatory cell infiltration from the dermis to the subcutaneous tissues and into the hair follicles, destruction of the hair follicles with granulomatous reactions, and fungal masses along the hair within the …

Telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is one of the most common causes of diffuse nonscarring hair loss. In its acute form, it generates a lot of anxiety in the patient, which can be significantly allayed with a confident diagnosis. In its more chronic form, however, the hair loss may go unnoticed for long periods of time. Here in, the dermatologist's role in differentiating it from the more common patterned hair loss is significant. Differentiating TE from other causes of diffuse nonscarring hair loss can indeed be a daunting task and TE is often used as a waste basket diagnosis. A number of factors have be…

Determination of cis/trans phase of variations in the MC1R gene with allele-specific PCR and single base extension.

The MC1R gene encodes a protein with key regulatory functions in the melanin synthesis. A multiplex PCR and a multiplex single base extension protocol were established for genotyping six exonic MC1R variations highly penetrant for red hair (R), four exonic MC1R variations weakly penetrant for red hair (r), two frameshift variations highly penetrant for red hair (R) and three variations in the promoter region. We genotyped 600 individuals from Denmark using either CE or MALDI-TOF MS as the detection platform. A total of 62 individuals were genotyped R/R and among the 62 individuals, 57 had red …

Photoletter to the editor: The Friar Tuck sign in trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is an impulse-control disorder, in which patients chronically pull hair from the scalp and/or other sites. We herein report a 8-year-old male patient who developed TTM in the classical tonsure pattern ("Friar Tuck" sign). The diagnosis was confirmed by trichoscopy, which showed decreased hair density, broken hairs with different shaft lengths, black dots, signs of hemorrhage, and an absence of exclamation mark hairs.

Ultrastructural findings in a case of Menière's disease.

The temporal bones of an individual with documented unilateral Meniere's disease were prepared for light and electron microscopy. A morphometric analysis was performed on hair cells, spiral ganglion cells, dendritic fibers in the osseous spiral lamina, afferent and efferent endings, and afferent synaptic contacts. In the ear with Meniere's disease, we found hair cell damage, including disruption of the cuticular bodies and basalward displacement of some outer hair cells. There was no significant difference in the number of hair cells or spiral ganglion cells on the two sides. There was a signi…

A Rare Type of Radiation-Induced Alopecia: Proton-Induced Alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced alopecia (RIA) is a side effect resulting from cranial radiation therapy (RT) and it can be temporary or permanent. In cancer patients, RIA is a less frequent event than chemotherapy-induced alopecia, although the former is more likely to cause permanent hair loss. It is characterized initially by intense anagen effluvium caused by acute dose-dependent damage to the matrix cells of anagen follicles. Proton therapy (PT) is a specific type of RT used in the treatment of brain tumors, which sometimes can cause proton-induced alopecia (PIA), a rare subtype of RIA. B…

Scalp vascularization as a marker of topical minoxidil treatment efficacy in patients with androgenetic alopecia.

INTRODUCTION: Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of non-cicatricial hair loss both in male and female patients. The pathomechanism of the disease involves chronic and progressive miniaturization of hair follicles, which leads to the conversion of terminal hair to vellus hair. Minoxidil is a first-line drug in the treatment of female pattern hair loss (FPHL). AIM: The study is aimed at verifying whether the degree of scalp vascularization has an impact on the efficacy of topical 5% minoxidil treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved a group of 76 patients diagnosed with F…

Therapeutic Potential of Stem Cells in Follicle Regeneration.

Alopecia is caused by a variety of factors which affect the hair cycle and decrease stem cell activity and hair follicle regeneration capability. This process causes lower self-acceptance, which may result in depression and anxiety. However, an early onset of androgenic alopecia is associated with an increased incidence of the metabolic syndrome and an increased risk of the cardiac ischaemic disease. The ubiquity of alopecia provides an encouragement to seek new, more effective therapies aimed at hair follicle regeneration and neoregeneration. We know that stem cells can be used to regenerate …

Alopecia Areata of the Beard: A Review of the Literature.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disorder in which inflammatory cells attack the hair follicle, resulting in round, well-circumscribed patches of noncicatricial hair loss in normal appearing skin. AA affecting the beard area is well known and is referred to as AA of the beard (BAA) or AA barbae when involvement is limited exclusively to the beard. BAA has been documented in a select number of studies. We review the literature and discuss the clinical features, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of BAA. Clinical presentation of BAA can vary and manifest as single small a…
