PURPOSE: The incidence of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) has been reported as 10-fold higher among the elderly population than in young adults. The aim of this study was to compare the targeted bacteria population in the fecal microbiota in two groups of hospitalized elderly, categorized according to CDI and non-CDI.

Paraduodenal hernias (PDHs) are rare entities that may present with acute or subacute symptoms, and which pose challenges to prompt diagnosis and treatment. The minimally invasive management of these hernias is emerging as a new compelling approach to optimize surgical recovery. We present the case of a 42-year-old female patient who presented with acute abdominal pain and symptoms of bowel obstruction. Abdominal imaging suggested the presence of a left PDH. Ileo-ileal knotting is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. In this condition, one bowel loop makes a knot with an adjacent bowel loop, resulting in mechanical obstruction and even gangrene of the bowel. We present a case of a young girl with ileo-ileal knotting resulting in a closed-loop obstruction and gangrene of the small bowel loop. This is a difficult condition to diagnose; a high index of suspicion and early surgical intervention are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Miliary abscess of the liver represents a rare presentation of multiple liver abscesses. They often occur in immunosuppressed patients, or those with underlying liver disease. We report the case of a 22-year-old patient, without known immunodeficiency factors, surgical history or notion of tuberculous contacts, who was admitted for generalized peritonitis and ileal perforation. An ileostomy was performed. The infectious syndrome persisted in post-operative period, associated with painful hepatomegaly. An contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scan led to the diagnosis of miliary abscess of the liver.
