Parameniscal cyst: an important differential diagnosis in slow growing masses of the knee.

INTRODUCTION: Parameniscal cysts are small cystic lesions, near the meniscus, involving medial and lateral compartments at equal frequency. Frequently, parameniscal cysts are so small that patients do not notice them, being asymptomatic. However, they can grow and exceed 2 centimeters in diameter, causing pain and alarm due to the slow growing mass. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for diagnosis. METHODS: Case report of a patient admitted to rheumatology department in the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra. RESULTS: We report a case of a 47-year-old male with i

Similarities and differences of estrogen in the regulation of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis and knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) and knee osteoarthritis (knee OA) are two kinds of common osteoarthritis (OA) that are characterized by chronic degeneration of soft and hard tissues around joints. Their gender and age differences suggest that there are similarities and differences between the pathogenic mechanisms of TMJOA and knee OA. OBJECTIVE: To review recent studies on the effect of estrogen on TMJOA and knee OA, and summarize their possible pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms. SOURCES: Articles up to present reporting the relationship of estrogen and TMJOA

Pre-emptive analgesia with methylprednisolone and gabapentin in total knee arthroplasty in the elderly.

The aim of this study is to assess whether administration of gabapentin and methylprednisolone as "pre-emptive analgesia" in a group of patients above 65 years of age would be effective in complex pain management therapy following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). One hundred seventy patients above 65 years were qualified for the study, with exclusion of 10 patients due to clinical circumstances. One hundred sixty patients were randomly double-blinded into two groups: the study group (80 patients) and the control group (80 patients). The study group received as "pre-emptive" analgesia a single do

Effects of knee prosthetic surgery on overactive bladder symptoms and incontinence in women.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder (OAB) are common conditions worldwide. These conditions significantly affect the quality of life (QoL) of patients with limited mobility. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures, resulting in pain relief, as well as improved function and QoL. This study was aimed at evaluating changes in patients' mobility as a result of TKA surgery and the effect of these changes on their OAB and UI symptoms. METHODS: A total of 49 female patients with stage IV osteoarthrosis were i

Epidemiology With Video Analysis of Knee Injuries in the Women's National Basketball Association.

BACKGROUND: Knee injuries are the most common type of injury seen in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). However, there are sparse epidemiologic data regarding these injuries over the past 20 years. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, return to play (RTP) rate/length, and mechanism of knee injuries in the WNBA. We hypothesized that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears would have the highest prevalence and longest RTP times. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: Publicly available WNBA injury reports were used to f

Chondral delamination of the knee and its management: a case report and review article.

Chondral delamination is the separation or debonding of the articular cartilage from the underlying subchondral bone. The hyaline cartilage has a limited capacity for healing, meaning it does not possess the innate ability to restore its normal structure or to heal the subchondral bone once detached from it. The purpose of this article is to report the outcomes of a microfracture technique used to manage chondral delamination in a 59-year-old male; we also reviewed the treatment options mentioned in the literature. The patient was admitted to the Department of Orthopedic Surgery complaining of

Post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis; the role of inflammation and hemarthrosis on disease progression.

Knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament ruptures and meniscal injury are common and are most frequently sustained by young and active individuals. Knee injuries will lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in 25-50% of patients. Mechanical processes where historically believed to cause cartilage breakdown in PTOA patients. But there is increasing evidence suggesting a key role for inflammation in PTOA development. Inflammation in PTOA might be aggravated by hemarthrosis which frequently occurs in injured knees. Whereas mechanical symptoms (joint instability and locking of the kne

MRI and Sonography of the Knee in Acute Reactive Arthritis: An Observational Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Reactive arthritis (ReA) is a unique subgroup of spondyloarthritis with acute presentation and tendency to develop chronicity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has enabled identification of sensitive markers of response to therapy. METHODS: A longitudinal pilot study of acute ReA with knee joint involvement satisfying the Braun's criteria was undertaken. Magnetic resonance imaging of the knee was assessed at baseline, and agreement with ultrasonography was assessed. Clinical details were recorded using a detailed and structured case record form. Patients were followed up, and MR

Relationship between the height of fibular head and the incidence and severity of knee osteoarthritis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between fibular head height and the incidence and severity of osteoarthritis associated with varus knee deformity. The fibular head height, joint line convergence angle (JLCA) and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were measured in a three-dimensional model. Ordinal multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation between fibular head height and Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grade. Pearson correlation was used to analyze the correlation between fibular head height and K-L grade. A total of 232 patients (232 knees) were

An Automatic Method for Assessing Spiking of Tibial Tubercles Associated with Knee Osteoarthritis.

Efficient and scalable early diagnostic methods for knee osteoarthritis are desired due to the disease's prevalence. The current automatic methods for detecting osteoarthritis using plain radiographs struggle to identify the subjects with early-stage disease. Tibial spiking has been hypothesized as a feature of early knee osteoarthritis. Previous research has demonstrated an association between knee osteoarthritis and tibial spiking, but the connection to the early-stage disease has not been investigated. We study tibial spiking as a feature of early knee osteoarthritis. Additionally, we devel

Comparison of analgesic consumption of hemophilic and non-hemophilic patients in knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Hemophilia is a rare hereditary bleeding disorder that develops as a result of factor VIII or IX deficiency. Long-term complications of hemophilia such as arthropathy, synovitis, and arthritis can lead to the development of recurrent chronic pain. Pain is therefore a critical aspect of hemophilia. The gold standard treatment for end-stage hemophilic knee arthropathy is total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The hypothesis of this study was that after knee replacement surgeries that cause severe post-operative pain, hemophilia patients with chronic analgesic consumption may experience highe
