BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience a subsequent ipsilateral anterior cruci (cruciate)ate ligament (ACL) reinjury may use hazardous muscle activation strategies after primary ACL reconstruction (ACLR). The purpose of this study was to compare electromyograms (EMGs) of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius muscles during a dynamic hopping task among individuals with a single ACL injury (ACLx1), individuals who went on to have secondary ipsilateral ACL injury (ACLx2), and individuals who have never sustained an ACL injury (ACLx0).
HYPOTHESIS: We expected that individuals who went on

RATIONALE: Limb-kinetic apraxia (LKA) is a disorder of movement execution that is a result of injury to the corticofugal tracts (CFTs) from the secondary motor area. We report on a patient with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and complete monoplegia due to LKA, which was mainly ascribed to injury of the CFT from the secondary motor area using diffusion tensor tractography.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 35-year-old male was struck by a car from the side during riding an autocycle and received direct head trauma as a result of falling to ground. He lost consciousness for approximately 1 month and experience

Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is an emergency with potentially devastating consequences. Delayed recognition may be especially concerning for the pediatric population, as children present with a wide variety of etiologies, symptoms, and levels of communication. We sought to determine the average time from injury to diagnosis, most common presentations, the degree to which providers obtained pressure measurements, and outcomes of ACS in the pediatric population. We performed a systematic review of multiple databases to include English-language clinical studies reporting ACS of the extremity

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a common injury in sports and often occurs during landing from a jump.
PURPOSE: To synthesize the evidence on the effects of injury prevention programs (IPPs) on landing biomechanics as they relate to the ligament, quadriceps, trunk, and leg dominance theories associated with ACL injury risk.
STUDY DESIGN: Meta-analysis.
METHODS: Six electronic databases were searched for studies that investigated the effect of IPPs on landing task biomechanics. Prospective studies that reported landing biomechanics at baseline and post-IPP were included.

BACKGROUND: The flow-through flap has been widely utilized for reconstruction of complex defects of the extremities as it can be used for arterial reconstruction and soft-tissue coverage simultaneously. This study describes our clinical experience with the application of the flow-through anterolateral thigh perforator (ALTP) flap for reconstruction of complex defects of the extremities.
METHODS: From January 2008 to June 2011, we retrospectively analyzed 16 patients with complex defects in the limbs. In two patients the defects occurred after undergoing wide excision of chronic ulcer, while 1

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intraarticular bleeds in congenital coagulation disorders result in early and extensive damage to the joints and periarticular structures. Total arthroplasty is the only effective method of treating these defects. Interim surgical procedures (arthroscopy, osteotomy, etc.) exist that can postpone arthroplasty, especially considering the fact that the condition affects young people. The aim of this paper is to discuss the range of trauma care and orthopedic procedures performed in patients with congenital coagulation disorders. Also presented are early results of joint ar

BACKGROUND: Despite representing over half of all pediatric patella fractures, inferior pole patellar sleeve fractures (PSFs) are a relatively uncommon pediatric injury. As a result, existing literature on PSFs is limited to case reports and small case series. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the radiographic and clinical characteristics of operatively treated PSFs as well as outcomes following surgical management.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all inferior pole PSFs requiring surgery from 2007 to 2023 was performed at a single urban tertiary care children's hospital. Cases were

BACKGROUND: Falls are common among older people with intellectual disability (ID) and are also a major contributor to injuries in this population. Yet, fall characteristics have only been sparsely studied, and the results are inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to investigate type of falls, places where they occurred and activities that caused them, as well as health outcomes and health utilisation patterns after falls, among older people with ID in comparison with their age peers in the general population.
METHODS: We established an administrative cohort of people with ID aged 55

Even with modern 3D conformal treatments skin radiation injury can be an inadvertent complication associated with clinical radiotherapy particularly at tissue folds. It is also of concern in the context of a radiological terrorism incident or accident, since skin irradiation lowers the lethal dose of whole body radiation. We hypothesize that radiation-induced skin injury originates from a loss of stem and progenitor cells, accompanied by excessive ROS production and proinflammatory cytokines. Plerixafor, a CXCR-4 antagonist, is one of the most efficient bone marrow stem cell mobilizers and the

BACKGROUND: To advance occupant protection through the improvement of safety countermeasures, it is necessary to understand the factors that affect human injury tolerance. This study investigated the effect of 'occupant factors' i.e. age, gender, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) on the pattern of lower extremity injury after motor vehicle crashes (MVCs). The second objective was to identify factor(s) (including restraint systems and Delta V) that influence the severity of fractures (open versus close fractures) within the lower extremity area. The outcome of this study may have implic

[Purpose] Dynamic balance and shock absorption during landing are essential for gymnastics performance and injury prevention; however, age-specific landing biomechanics remain unclear. This study examined age-related differences in dynamic postural control and shock absorption during single-leg drop landing (SDL) among junior gymnasts. [Participants and Methods] Forty junior gymnasts (elementary school: n=12; junior high school: n=12; high school: n=16) performed SDL from a 20-cm platform onto a force plate. Peak vertical ground reaction force (Fz), buffering coefficient, and center of pressur

Biomechanical strategies of running gait were compared among healthy and recently injured pediatric and adult runners (N = 207). Spatiotemporal, kinematic, and kinetic parameters (ground reaction force [GRF], vertical average loading rate [VALR]) and leg stiffness (Kvert) were obtained during running on an instrumented treadmill with simultaneous 3D-motion capture. Significant age X injury interactions existed for cadence, peak GRF, and peak joint angles in stance. Cadence was fastest in healthy adults and 2-3% lower in other groups (p = 0.049). Injured adults exhibited higher variance in stan
