Maternal hair testing to disclose self-misreporting in drinking and smoking behavior during pregnancy.

This study aimed to objectively verify smoking and drinking behavior during pregnancy and to disclose self-misreporting through maternal hair analysis. A total of 153 women attending a university hospital in Barcelona (Spain) were selected and interviewed after delivery, on their smoking and drinking habits during pregnancy. A 9-cm hair strand was collected and analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the presence of nicotine (NIC) and ethyl glucuronide (EtG) as biomarkers of tobacco and alcohol consumption, respectively. Concentrations of EtG <7 pg/mg hair and ≥30 pg/mg

Use of cannabis during pregnancy and birth outcomes in an Aboriginal birth cohort: a cross-sectional, population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous women continue to experience rates of stillbirth, preterm birth and low birth weight, two to three times higher than other women in high-income countries. The reasons for disparities are complex and multifactorial. We aimed to assess the extent to which adverse birth outcomes are associated with maternal cannabis use and exposure to stressful events and social health issues during pregnancy. DESIGN/SETTING: Cross-sectional, population-based survey of women giving birth to Aboriginal babies in South Australia, July 2011-June 2013. Data include: maternal cannabis use, exp

Exposure to phthalates in early pregnancy and the risk of fetal growth restriction: a nested case-control study in a Zhuang Chinese population.

Phthalates (PAEs) are common endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that disrupt fetal development. The present study aimed to evaluate the e … nd the risk of FGR and identified no significant interaction between the seven phthalates. Overall, maternal exposure to BBP, DEHP, and DMP may cause adverse effects on FGR, especially with combined effects.

Double Jeopardy: Young adult mental and physical health outcomes following conception via genocidal rape during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Rwandans conceived by rape during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi have endured a violent beginning and a troubled childhood. Given compelling evidence of the influence of prenatal environments and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on future health, these individuals are at high risk of poor mental and physical health outcomes. The purpose of the study was to characterize mental and physical health outcomes in young adults who were exposed prenatally to maternal stress due to the genocide in general and those conceived by genocidal rape, and to determine whether ACEs compound these effec

Self-reported exposure to severe events on the labour ward among Swedish midwives and obstetricians: A cross-sectional retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The process of delivery entails potentially traumatic events in which the mother or child becomes injured or dies. Midwives and obstetricians are sometimes responsible for these events and can be negatively affected by them as well as by the resulting investigation or complaints procedure (clinical negligence). OBJECTIVE: To assess the self-reported exposure rate of severe events among midwives and obstetricians on the delivery ward and the cumulative risk by professional years and subsequent investigations and complaints. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS: Members of

Maternal pathways linking sociocognitive resources and immune balance to infant neurodevelopment: from cytokines to education.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic renewed interest in prenatal immune exposures and offspring neurodevelopment. While maternal immune activation (MIA) is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), emerging evidence suggests that immune balance-particularly within the IL-6/IL-10 axis-may be more informative than absolute inflammatory levels. METHODS: In the COGESTCOV-19 cohort, 95 children (50 prenatally exposed to maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection; 45 controls) were reassessed at 26 months using the Bayley-III (cognitive, language, and motor domains). Group comparisons (ANOVA/ANCOVA) and

The role of vitamin D deficiency in fetal growth restriction: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fetal Growth Restriction (FGR) and Small-for-Gestational-Age (SGA) are major contributors to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Maternal vitamin D deficiency has been proposed to impair placental development and fetal growth through mechanisms involving angiogenesis, immune regulation, and oxidative stress. Increasing evidence suggests that maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] status may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of impaired fetal growth. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on the association between maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and the r

Identification of modifiable risk factors to prevent atopic wheeze in infants born to mothers with asthma: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal asthma is the leading risk factor for children developing wheeze and allergic disease in early life. We aimed to describe atopic phenotypes in infants of mothers with asthma and assess which early-life factors were associated with these phenotypes. METHODS: Participants were part of the Breathing for Life Trial Birth Cohort, which recruited pregnant women with asthma prior to 23 weeks gestation (n=549). Parents completed a validated questionnaire about their child's wheeze requiring healthcare utilisation (hospitalisation, emergency department visits, consultant referral a

The Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort study: Rationale, design, and methods.

BACKGROUND: Primary prevention strategies for asthma are lacking. Its inception probably starts in utero and/or during the early postnatal period as the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) paradigm suggests. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) cohort study is to unravel whether the following factors contribute causally to the developmental origins of asthma: (1) maternal obesity/adiposity and foetal growth; (2) maternal and child nutrition; (3) outdoor air pollution; (4) endocrine disruptors; and (5) maternal psychological stress. Pregnancy-Related Cardiovascular Diseases: A Radiological Overview.

Pregnancy induces significant hemodynamic changes, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the leading causes of non-obstetric maternal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy or the postpartum period in developed countries. The effective diagnosis and management of CVDs in pregnant women require a thorough evaluation that considers the health of both the mother and the fetus. Imaging plays a pivotal role in this evaluation, offering essential insights into the most significant pregnancy-related CVDs. However, due to concerns about fetal exposure, the use of contrast agents and radiatio

Perinatal nicotine/smoking exposure and carotid chemoreceptors during development.

Tobacco smoking is still a common habit during pregnancy and is the most important preventable cause of many adverse perinatal outcomes. Prenatal smoking exposure can produce direct actions of nicotine in the fetus with the disruption of body and brain development, and actions on the maternal-fetal unit by causing repeated episodes of hypoxia and exposure to many toxic smoke products (such as carbon monoxide). Specifically, nicotine through binding to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors have ubiquitous effects and can affect carotid chemoreception development through structural, functional and n

Pre- and post-natal exposure to antibiotics and the development of eczema, recurrent wheezing and atopic sensitization in children up to the age of 4 years.

BACKGROUND: Little data are available on the relationship between indirect antibiotic exposure of the child in utero or during lactation and allergic diseases. On the other hand, several studies have been conducted on the association with direct post-natal antibiotic exposure, but the results are conflicting. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate pre- and post-natal antibiotic exposure and the subsequent development of eczema, recurrent wheeze and atopic sensitization in children up to the age of 4 years. METHODS: We conducted an aetiologic study in 773 children based on a pros

Acetaminophen use during pregnancy, behavioral problems, and hyperkinetic disorders.

IMPORTANCE: Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is the most commonly used medication for pain and fever during pregnancy in many countries. Research data suggest that acetaminophen is a hormone disruptor, and abnormal hormonal exposures in pregnancy may influence fetal brain development. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether prenatal exposure to acetaminophen increases the risk for developing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like behavioral problems or hyperkinetic disorders (HKDs) in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We studied 64,322 live-born children and mothers enrolled in th

Association of prenatal exposure to opioids, cannabis, and polysubstance use with cord blood DNA methylation patterns in a multiancestry cohort.

Blood DNA methylation patterns are highly predictive of prenatal exposure to smoking, and differential methylation has been associated with maternal alcohol use. We extended this to determine whether DNA methylation patterns in cord blood are associated with prenatal exposure to opioids, cannabis, and polysubstance use. We also evaluated whether DNA methylation patterns have predictive utility. We examined 932 mother-child pairs in the Boston Birth Cohort between 1998 and 2020 with cord blood DNA methylation data. For each substance self-reported within 72 hr after birth, we performed an adjus

Ethanol exposure impaired mitotic division in apical radial glial cells and disrupted early cortical development in human forebrain organoids: Implications for ethanol-induced microcephaly.

Maternal alcohol exposure can severely disrupt the differentiation of neural stem/progenitor cells, leading to a reduced number of neurons and decreased volume and thickness of the cortical layers, a hallmark feature commonly associated with microcephaly. Recent studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that ethanol exposure interfered with the formation of radial glial processes and impaired the generation and migration of outer radial glial cells in human forebrain organoids. However, the precise mechanisms by which ethanol affects the production of outer radial glial cells remain unclea
