Perceived educational reassurance, pain intensity, and fear-avoidance: insights from a secondary analysis of low back pain data.

Perceived reassurance about low back pain (LBP) can influence psychological and behavioral responses to pain, including pain intensity and fear-avoidance beliefs. This study explored how messages about LBP contribute to variations in these responses. A secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study was conducted, including 957 participants with non-specific LBP who completed an online survey. The majority of participants were female (69.1%), and 55% reported acute LBP. The survey collected demographic data, pain intensity ratings using a numeric scale, fear-avoidance beliefs through the Fear-Av

A challenge to improve the Quality of Care.Rehabilitation outcome measures in the Emergency Department: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The integration of physiotherapists within Emergency Departments (EDs) is increasing internationally; however, the outcome measures employed in this setting remain heterogeneous and largely non-standardized. OBJECTIVE: To map and describe clinical, functional, psychological, prognostic, and patient experience outcome measures currently used by physiotherapists working in EDs. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched from their inception to November 2025. Studies were included if they involved patients of any

Reproductive stage and other risk factors associated with intimate partner violence: a multisite study of women with HIV in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The 2025 US National HIV/AIDS Strategy identifies intimate partner violence (IPV) as a key social determinant in the HIV response. Women with HIV (WHIV) face heightened IPV risk, especially during pregnancy. We evaluated the associations between reproductive stage, structural risk factors and past-year IPV among WHIV in the United States. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using 2022-2025 baseline survey data from the HOPE prospective cohort of WHIV across 14 sites in nine US states/territories. METHODS: The outcome was past-year experience of physical, sexual, or psy

Association of psychological stress with wives' hypertension across over 10 million Chinese married female population aged 20-49 years.

BACKGROUND: Psychological stress has been reported to be a potential risk factor for hypertension among females, but it remains unclear whether spousal chronic stress levels alter the risk of hypertension among women. We examined the associations between stress within the family and hypertension among married women. METHODS: Reproductive-aged women who were planning for pregnancy and their husbands were recruited from the National Free Pre-pregnancy Checkup Projects (NFPCP) across 31 provinces in China in 2016 and 2017. Perceived stress of wives or husbands was measured with a 5-point Likert-

Predictive Value of Life's Crucial 9 for Cardiovascular and All-Cause Mortality: A Prospective Cohort Study From the NHANES 2007 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: The predictive value of Life's Crucial 9 (LC9), a recently proposed cardiovascular health risk score combining psychological health and Life's Essential 8 (LE8), remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cohort study, we included 16 290 adults without cardiovascular disease from the 2007 to 2018 cycles of NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey). The LC9 was the mean of the LE8 score and the depression score, which represented a dimension of psychological health. The study outcomes were cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Cox proportional hazard models wer

Modifiable Risk Factors for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias Among Middle Eastern and North African Immigrants to the United States.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Modifiable risk factors across the life course play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). Studies have identified racial and ethnic disparities in ADRD risk factors. Few studies have explored the epidemiology of ADRD risk among Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) Americans, largely due to their classification as White in US national health surveys. Our aim was to estimate ADRD risk factors among MENA immigrants compared to US- and foreign-born non-Hispanic White adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We linked cross-section

Effects of Trauma Cue Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on Affect and Cannabis Craving in Cannabis Users With Trauma Histories: Use of Expressive Writing as an Online Cue-Reactivity Paradigm: Effets de l'exposition aux signaux traumatiques et du SSPT sur l'affect et le besoin de cannabis chez les consommateurs de cannabis ayant des antécédents de traumatismes : utilisation de l'écriture expressive comme paradigme de réactivité en ligne.

OBJECTIVES: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cannabis use disorder (CUD) commonly co-occur. Conditioned associations between psychological trauma cues, distress, cannabis use, and desired relief outcomes may contribute to the comorbidity. These conditioned associations can be studied experimentally by manipulating trauma cue exposure in a cue-reactivity paradigm (CRP) and examining effects on affective and cognitive outcomes in participants with and without PTSD. However, traditional CRPs take place in-lab limiting recruitment/power. We aimed to examine the effects of CRP condition (tr

Etiology and correlates of alcohol misuse in early midlife.

BACKGROUND: Early midlife individuals (ages 30-40) experience demographic shifts that may influence the remainder of adult life. Although new or persistent alcohol misuse is common during this period, early midlife is understudied in alcohol use literature. We examined the heritability of alcohol misuse; the associations between alcohol misuse and sociodemographic factors, physical health, and well-being; and whether these associations were robust in cotwin comparisons. METHODS: Participants were 1446 Finnish twin pairs and 748 nonpaired Finnish twins with mean age 34 years. The alcohol misus

Association of psychosocial state with subsequent risk of dementia: a prospective cohort study based on the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Multiple psychosocial factors have been associated with dementia, while the individual or joint effects of various psychosocial states on dementia remain unrevealed due to the complex interplay between those factors. Here, the authors examined the associations of psychosocial factors and patterns with subsequent risk of dementia, and if the associations could be modified by genetic susceptibility to dementia. METHODS: UK Biobank dementia-free participants were followed from one year after recruitment (median date: 24 January, 2010) until 31 October, 2022. Psychosocial states were

Does volunteering impact refugee women's life satisfaction, empowerment, and wellbeing? Experimental evidence, local knowledge, and causal reasoning.

BACKGROUND: There are gaps in the evidence base addressing whether volunteering programs enhance the wellbeing, empowerment, and life satisfaction of individual volunteers. Program impacts are seldom rigorously evaluated, whilst construct meanings remain largely unspecified, especially in the Middle East. This study tested the impacts of We Love Reading, a program training volunteers to read aloud in their local communities. It also mapped local knowledge representation. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-method program evaluation based on a randomized cluster trial with 105 Syrian refugee women f

Randomized Controlled Trial of a Nurse-Led Brief Behavioral Intervention for Dyspnea in Patients With Advanced Lung Cancer.

PURPOSE: In patients with lung cancer, dyspnea is one of the most prevalent and disabling symptoms, for which effective treatments are lacking. We examined the efficacy of a nurse-led brief behavioral intervention to improve dyspnea in patients with advanced lung cancer. METHODS: Patients with advanced lung cancer reporting at least moderate breathlessness (n = 247) were enrolled in a randomized trial of a nurse-led two-session intervention (focused on breathing techniques, postural positions, and fan therapy) versus usual care. At baseline and weeks 8 (primary end point), 16, and 24, partici

Differences in and associations between belief in just deserts and human rights restrictions over a 3-year period in five countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discrimination, which arose during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, is a global public health issue. This study aimed to provide fundamental knowledge in proposing control measures to mitigate discrimination. We focused on two psychological variables: belief in just deserts (BJD, i.e., the belief that the infected individual deserves to be infected), a psychological factor that potentially promotes discrimination and prejudice, and human rights restrictions (HRR; i.e., the degree of individuals' agreement with government restrictions on citizens' behavior during emergencies). Differences

Race, Ethnicity, and Belief in a Just World: Implications for Chronic Pain Acceptance Among Individuals with Chronic Low Back Pain.

Chronic pain acceptance is a psychological process consistently linked with improved functional outcomes. However, existing research on this construct has not considered the role of racial or ethnic background, despite growing evidence of racialized disparities in pain experience and treatment. This study aimed to examine racial differences in chronic pain acceptance, as measured by the chronic pain acceptance questionnaires (CPAQ), in a multicultural sample of individuals with chronic low back pain (N = 137-37.2% White, 31.4% Hispanic, and 31.4% Black/African American). We further sought to e
