Influence of facial width on the perception of lip protrusion and its differences between profile and 3-dimensional video clip.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the influence of facial width on the perception of lip protrusion and investigated the concordance between 2-dimensional (2D) profile images and 3-dimensional (3D) video clips in assessing lip protrusion. METHODS: An Asian female standard head model was created using 3D modeling software. Eight head models were constructed by modifying the standard head model in terms of facial width (broad, neutral, and slim) and lip protrusion (retrusive, straight, and protrusive). Overall, 97 Asian raters rated the lip protrusion from the 2D profiles and 3D rotation video

Sustentaculum fracture fixation with lateral plate or medial screw fixation are equivalent.

BACKGROUND: Fixation of sustentaculum tali fractures is important to maintain the biomechanical function of the subtalar joint. A common method of fixation is securing the sustentacular fragment by way of a laterally based locking plate (LP). A medial approach with a single screw (MS) has been proposed as an alternative method of fixation. METHODS: Five pairs of formalin-preserved cadaveric ankles with the subtalar joint and interosseous ligaments intact ("osseous cadavers") and four pairs of fresh-frozen cadaveric ankles with soft-tissue preserved dissected from mid-tibia down ("soft tissue

Novel deep learning hybrid models (CNN-GRU and DLDL-RF) for the susceptibility classification of dust sources in the Middle East: a global source.

Dust storms have many negative consequences, and affect all kinds of ecosystems, as well as climate and weather conditions. Therefore, classification of dust storm sources into different susceptibility categories can help us mitigate its negative effects. This study aimed to classify the susceptibility of dust sources in the Middle East (ME) by developing two novel deep learning (DL) hybrid models based on the convolutional neural network-gated recurrent unit (CNN-GRU) model, and the dense layer deep learning-random forest (DLDL-RF) model. The Dragonfly algorithm (DA) was used to identify the

Application of longitudinal item response theory models to modeling Parkinson's disease progression.

The Movement Disorder Society revised version of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) parts 2 and 3 reflect patient-reported functional impact and clinician-reported severity of motor signs of Parkinson's disease (PD), respectively. Total scores are common clinical outcomes but may obscure important time-based changes in items. We aim to analyze longitudinal disease progression based on MDS-UPRDS parts 2 and 3 item-level responses over time and as functions of Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) stages 1 and 2 for subjects with early PD. The longitudinal item response theory (IRT) modeling

Vascular Cross-Section, Rather Than Tortuosity, Can Classify First-Pass Outcome of Mechanical Thrombectomy for Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Vascular geometry plays an important role in stroke thrombectomy outcomes, but few studies have examined complex characteristics of vessel morphology. The authors hypothesized that engineered vessel cross-section features could be used to predict thrombectomy first-pass effect (FPE). METHODS: The authors analyzed computed tomography angiography and noncontrast computed tomagraphy from 50 patients with anterior circulation stroke thrombectomy. After segmentation, traditional metrics (vessel tortuosity and angulation) were calculated from vessel centerlines that were transformed int

In vivo and in silico anti-inflammatory properties of the sesquiterpene valencene.

Valencene (VLN) is a sesquiterpene found in juices and essential oils of citrus species such as Cyperus rotundus. Considering the evidence that this species has anti-inflammatory effects, the present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of VLN in vivo and in silico. Swiss mice (n = 6) were orally treated according to their treatment groups as follows: VLN (10, 100 or 300 mg/kg), negative control (0.9% saline), and positive controls (indomethacin 25 mg/kg or promethazine 6 mg/kg). The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in murine models of acute and chronic inflammation. T

Monte Carlo Method and GA-MLR-Based QSAR Modeling of NS5A Inhibitors against the Hepatitis C Virus.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious disease that threatens human health. Despite consistent efforts to inhibit the virus, it has infected more than 58 million people, with 300,000 deaths per year. The HCV nonstructural protein NS5A plays a critical role in the viral life cycle, as it is a major contributor to the viral replication and assembly processes. Therefore, its importance is evident in all currently approved HCV combination treatments. The present study identifies new potential compounds for possible medical use against HCV using the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR)

Predicting deseasonalised serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D concentrations in the D-Health Trial: An analysis using boosted regression trees.

BACKGROUND: The D-Health Trial aims to determine whether monthly high-dose vitamin D supplementation can reduce the mortality rate and prevent cancer. We did not have adequate statistical power for subgroup analyses, so could not justify the high cost of collecting blood samples at baseline. To enable future exploratory analyses stratified by baseline vitamin D status, we developed models to predict baseline serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. METHODS: We used data and serum 25(OH)D concentrations from participants who gave a blood sample during the trial for compliance monito

Impact of socioeconomic- and lifestyle-related risk factors on poor mental health conditions: A nationwide longitudinal 5-wave panel study in Japan.

The association of socioeconomic status and lifestyle behaviours on mental health appears well-established in the literature, as several studies report that better socioeconomic status such as higher levels of disposable income and employment as well as practising healthy lifestyles can enhance mental well-being. However, the reliance on cross-sectional correlations and lack of adequate statistical controls are possible limitations. This study aims to add the evidence of longitudinal association to the literature by using Japanese representative longitudinal household panel data. We employed p

The TRIVIA Cohort for Surgical Management of Tetralogy of Fallot: Merging Population and Clinical Data for Real-World Scientific Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for surgical management of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) are often based on low-quality evidence due to the many challenges of congenital heart disease: heterogeneous cardiac anatomy, consequences from surgical interventions arising years later, and scarcity of hard outcomes. The overarching goal of the Tetralogy of Fallot Research for Improvement of Valve replacement Intervention: A Bridge Across the Knowledge Gap (TRIVIA) study is to evaluate the long-term impact of the surgical management strategies in TOF. The specific objectives are: (1) to describe the long-term outcom

Persistent CSF but not plasma HIV RNA is associated with increased risk of new-onset moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms; a prospective cohort study.

Major depressive disorder is the most common neuropsychiatric complication in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections and is associated with worse clinical outcomes. We determined if detectable cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) HIV ribonucleic acid (RNA) at threshold ≥50 copies/ml is associated with increased risk of depression. The CNS HIV Anti-Retroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) cohort is a six-center US-based prospective cohort with bi-annual follow-up of 674 participants. We fit linear mixed models (N = 233) and discrete-time survival models (N = 154; 832 observations) to evaluate
