A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of lactoferrin, which is a protein component of cow's milk, in the treatment of tinea pedis. Doses of either 600 mg or 2000 mg of lactoferrin, or a placebo was orally administered daily for 8 weeks to 37 adults who were judged to have mild or moderate tinea pedis. A case of cutaneous histoplasmosis is reported in an 80-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis who had been treated with steroid therapy for 15 years. The patient developed a large ulcerative lesion on the back of the left hand and on the distal third of the left dorsal forearm after a slight trauma. Diagnosis was based on histological and mycological examination. Systemic involvement was not found. The lesions healed after 2 months of therapy with 100 mg day-1 fluconazole, confirmed at follow-up 1 year later.

An outbreak of tinea corporis due to Trichophyton tonsurans among 46 children (aged 7-17 years) was investigated. Most of them were wrestlers. During a 2-year period 30 adults were selected out of a group of patients diagnosed with erysipelas, who, except for tinea pedis, were apparently otherwise healthy patients. Clinical and epidemiological studies were performed to establish how tinea pedis and erysipelas are related. Seventy-three 1-year-experienced Danish soldiers were examined for tinea pedis as well as onychomycoses before and after a duty period of 6 months in ex-Yugoslavia. The incidence of fungal infections was 16.4% before and 32.3% after their duty period abroad. For this review, 78 studies regarding the use of fluconazole in a total of 726 children below 1 year of age were evaluated. A case of disseminated candidosis in a premature newborn twin I (26th weeks of pregnancy) is reported. A severe mycotic infection of the organs, especially the kidneys was present. Even Candida in the pancreatic islets of Langerhans cells could be demonstrated. Twin II also suffered a Candida infection but in contrast to twin I she survived after therapy. Candida infection of twins is rarely reported in the literature.

From 1986 to 1988, in the prefluconazole era, 67,765 clinical specimens from the Göttingen University Hospital were investigated for bacteria and fungi in our institution.
